Dr. G’s October Flute Horoscopes. By Rachel Taylor Geier

Happy October and welcome to Fall! The big news this month is that Venus, planet of love and beauty, will be going retrograde from October 6th through November 16th. Typically, when Venus goes retrograde, people from your past tend to come back into your life to play a part in moving you forward. This could be in the form of an old colleague or a flute teacher that offers you a wonderful new collaborative opportunity or forwards information about an exciting upcoming audition. Take the gifts that they offer during this time and make the most of the time you spend with them. Venus retrograde is also a good time to reevaluate your finances and how you spend money. Are you investing properly in the future or wasting your money on frivolities? Venus will help attract the things that are truly meaningful to your flute career this month. Embrace the lessons being shown to you during this time and usher into your life the opportunities that will help you rise to the next level.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIBRA! Your ruler, Venus, will be going retrograde this month beginning on October 6th. Be on the lookout for old colleagues (or flute rivals) to suddenly come back into your life. You may attend an audition and realize that after 10 years or so apart, you are once again competing against each other for an orchestral position or teaching opportunity. Remain calm, and professional. You may also want to give yourself a makeover during this time. Be cautious – Venus retrograde sometimes makes us take risks that end up being disappointing and scary (not in a good way). Maybe don’t dye your hair purple without a second option (or two). On October 8th, a New Moon in your 1st house makes you the star of the season. You are on a mission to do your Libra thing and beautify everything in your life – yourself, your environment, your closet, your home studio, literally everything. Other signs may enjoy ”spring cleaning” in April or May, but this year you prefer to do your own personal ”spring cleaning” in October. With Venus retrograde in your 1st house, you may be spending money on new furniture or filing cabinets for your flute studio or a beautiful new piece of art to hang on your walls to inspire your students. Mercury joins Jupiter in your 2nd house of income on October 10th, further encouraging you to spend some cash. This is a good time to also look at some sensible purchases for your flute practice – perhaps a new, sturdy music stand, or decent microphone. This energy, combined with the Venus retrograde, could help you get a real bargain on something that you have had your eye on for a long time (a computer, sound mixer, headjoint, jeweled crown, or even a new flute). On October 24th, a Full Moon joins Uranus in your 8th house of banking and finance. You may be about to make an even larger purchase and need to secure a loan to do it. Don’t jump in too quickly – give yourself some time to consider all that is required to secure these funds. Dot your ”i”s and cross your ”t”s (even when Uranus tries to tell you not to)! The Sun moves into your 2nd house of income on October 24th, putting your money once again in the spotlight. Are you making enough money right now to purchase everything on your wish list? If not, are there opportunities in your current job situation to add to your income? Can you find more paid performing gigs? Recruit more students? You could also be getting a promotion at your current job during this time. You are super excited to move forward with this new opportunity. Well done, Libra! You have earned it.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

The month begins with a Venus retrograde on October 6th in your 12th house of behind the scenes projects. You are completely okay with this as your focus for most of the month will generally be on those longer-term projects. You will be locking yourself either in your home office or in your practice room trying to finish something that may have either been on the backburner or a project that is suddenly resurrected from the past (for example, your flute choir may be rehearsing an arrangement of the Griffes Poem, a piece that you have not performed since high school, and you are determined not to rush the cadenza this time). A New Moon also joins Venus, Mercury, and the Sun in your 12th house on October 8th, shining a light on new projects that you will also be bringing into your office or practice room (or both). Scorpios often enjoy their alone time and like getting things done behind the scenes. You may find yourself using your incredible, laser focus on a mixture of old and new projects, juggling multiple ideas masterfully away from the chaos of others. Be sure to take breaks during this intense working period! Your family needs to know you are still alive… On October 10th, Mercury moves into your sign, joining Jupiter. This is a great time for writing up a storm on your blog, website, or on social media. After spending hours in the practice room, you have a lot to say about practice tips and repertoire. Mercury wants you to share your ideas quickly and effectively with the World. Everyone is listening. This is also a good time to record and upload some YouTube videos. Talk about a really good way to get feedback! Record yourself performing a piece for your next recital. Just remember that sometimes haters are going to hate. Try to read comments with an open mind. A Full Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships on October 24th, where it joins Uranus. This is a great time to connect with a wonderful new friend or colleague completely out of the blue. This person will help you get your head out of the practice room and into an exciting new collaborative project. Finally, the Sun moves into your sign on October 24th, putting the spotlight on you and who you are in the World. Move any finalized projects out of the shadows and into the limelight. It is time to put your very best work on display either in a recital, on the internet, or in any other public venue where others can enjoy your creative hard work.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

October begins with Venus moving retrograde on October 6th, going into your 11th house of groups and communities. You may be rejoining an orchestra or flute choir or possibly performing as a guest soloist with a group from your past. They might not have realized your value as a performer until it was too late. This is their opportunity to right a wrong. Take them up on it! A New Moon joins the party in this 11th house on October 8th, ushering in an opportunity with a new performing group. You may end up feeling a bit burned out this month due to the number of rehearsals you will be attending, but try to enjoy the music you make with others as much as possible. Take care of yourself and get enough rest in your down time. Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind the scenes projects, or, in other words, the practice room house on October 10th. You will be spending quite a bit of time burning the midnight oil in the practice room. This is largely in part to the amount of music you will be required to learn in your performing groups. Try not to overdo it. Take breaks and practice smarter, not harder. Make the most of your practice time by focusing on specific selections and techniques that need the most work. A Full Moon appears in your 6th house of work and health routines on October 24th. Get ready for a promotion, Sagittarius. Your hard work is about to pay off in wonderful ways. Perhaps you will be promoted to a better chair position in one of your groups or gain a brand-new crowd of students after performing well at a Fall concert. You could also be starting a new exercise regime to keep your stress levels under control during this crazy time. This is joined by the Sun moving into your 12th house of behind the scenes projects also on October 24th. Not only will you be heading back to the practice room (promotion = more work), but you will also want to take some time to retreat from the chaos of your world and hit the reset button. Take up yoga or meditation to center yourself every once in a while.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

You will be reevaluating your career goals at the beginning of the month when Venus turns retrograde and heads toward your 10th house of careers. Are you on the correct path or do you need to change something in your life to accommodate other possible directions towards happiness and fulfillment? Venus retrograde often brings back people and things from your past. This is a good time to reach out to a past mentor for some valuable words of advice. A New Moon also appears in your 10th house of careers on October 8th, helping you to attract a new opportunity in your career. You are ready to spread your wings and try something new. This will breathe new life into your career. You may shift your focus from teaching to performing or vice versa. You may take up a second instrument or dive into non-traditional flute repertoire and realize how much you enjoy learning something new. Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities on October 10th. Show off your new skills to the groups you play in. Join a new group for beginning guitarists or try your hand at the tin whistle on gig night at the Irish Pub. Write about some of your group experiences on your blog or on a Flute Forum group on social media. The Full Moon in your 5th house on October 24th asks you to put your creative mind to the test. As you learn new ways to experience the flute, you could be inspired to compose a piece of music based on some of your newfound knowledge. How can you make the standard C flute sound more like a guitar or a tin whistle? What do you love about these new instruments and how can you bring something similar into your own studio practices? These creative ideas will help inspire you to join a new group when the Sun moves into the 11th house of groups and communities on October 24th. Dive deep into the tin whistle community on YouTube or join a newbie guitarist group on Twitter or Instagram. You are interested in ways to connect your current flute playing experiences with other communities around the globe.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

October begins with Venus going retrograde first in your 10th house of careers and moving into your 9th house of travel. Whenever Venus goes retrograde, it can bring things and people from your past back into your life. As it is occurring first in your career house and moving into your travel house, you may be reconnecting with an old colleague online who could be attending the same performance, masterclass, or conference in another state or country. This will be a good time for you to reconnect, collaborate on new projects, and learn new skills from each other’s rather varied experience. The flute world can be surprisingly small, and it is important to maintain strong connections to your flute friends. There is so much that we can create when we pool our collective flute talents! On a smaller scale, Venus retrograde could find you picking up an old piece of music that you last performed at a very pivotal point in your career. You might be re-learning this work to perform at a location far from home or even at an audition. This is followed by a New Moon in your 9th house of travel on October 8th. If you are planning to attend a conference or an audition, this a good time to book your ticket and start making travel plans. Venus retrograde might even help you find a bargain on airfares and hotel expenses! On October 10th, Mercury moves into your 10th house of careers, encouraging you to start communicating your career goals to others, specifically those in authority who may have some good ideas about how to advance your career. If Venus has anything to say about it, this could be an old flute professor or college advisor. You may have felt a bit stuck over the summer with the Mars/Mercury retrogrades and want to move forward, but not without a firm plan of action. Your mentor will help you devise this plan. You could be starting a flute blog or publishing an article about the flute during this time. You have a lot to say about your experiences and are looking for an outlet to express your thoughts to the larger flute world. October 24 closes out the month in a big way as a Full Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family while the Sun moves into your 10th house of careers. Both of these energies suggest that you may be moving for a new job. It is quite possible that you won the audition that you traveled to earlier in the month and now must plan the future relocation with your family. The energies of both the Sun and Moon are positive during this time and encouraging you to literally move forward with your career and your life. Sometimes when the Universe gives us a nudge, it wants us to take the next step. Take the next step this month, Aquarius!

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Happy October, Pisces. The month begins with a Venus retrograde on October 6th moving first from your 9th house of travel and into your 8th house of banking and finances. Often when Venus goes retrograde, people from your past suddenly pop back into your life. You may be traveling to an old stomping ground at the beginning of the month. This could be an old school or concert hall or even just a practice space somewhere that you spent long weekends practicing recital music as a youth. You will be quite inspired by this place. There is something about this area that makes you want to either invest your money in nearby real estate (to be closer to the place you once loved), donate money (if this place is tied to a school or church), or simply invest in upgrades to your own studio or performance environment that mimic the same space. A New Moon appears in this very same 8th house of banking and finances on October 8th, asking you to look into the financial realities of what you are dreaming about. Can you make this happen? Are you ready to purchase a home or vacation rental near your favorite concert hall? On a smaller scale, you could be finally purchasing a season ticket package to your favorite opera troupe or high-end symphony. You are ready to invest in something that speaks to your heart. On October 10th, Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel. This is a great time to blog about your experiences abroad. Where have you traveled recently and what has it taught you about the flute? Have you been researching flute playing traditions from around the world? Write about it. Publish your findings in a flute journal or write a book about your observations. The month winds down on October 24th with a Full Moon in your 3rd house of communications. Whatever this publication project is that you began on October 10th, it will be coming to a chapter ending on the Full Moon. Either your work is ready to be submitted to a publisher, accepted by a publisher, or simply ready to be shared on your blog. This is a great opportunity to share your ideas and flute playing experiences with the world. Finally, the Sun also moves into your 9th house of travel on October 24th. Your mind will literally be in the clouds as you plan your new adventure. Are you planning travel for an upcoming audition? Have you received a grant to travel to Europe? This is a good time to begin making arrangements.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

The month begins with Venus turning retrograde, first in your 8th house of banking and finances and eventually in your 7th house of relationships. Venus can bring old colleagues into your life, but it can also help you reevaluate your finances and help secure bargains. This energy is ideal for those of you wanting to start up your own flute choir. Invite flute friends both old and new from your surrounding community, and start investing in new music, chairs, extra music stands, and decent recording equipment. You may even set up a membership fee system to help pay for future recital venues. You will be reconnecting with other flutists in a way that requires some type of monetary investment on your part. The reward greatly outweighs the cost in this situation. Why? Because a New Moon in your 7th house of relationships on October 8th puts a spotlight on your connections with colleagues. You will be strengthening your ties to your current flute friends during this time as well as connecting with new flutists on wonderful, collaborative projects (again, this is the ideal energy for those either starting or rejoining a flute choir). On October 10th, Mercury will be moving into your 8th house of banking and finance. You have spotted a great deal on a new flute or have found a wonderful grant opportunity to study abroad and you can’t stop talking about it. It’s okay – you are excited and are eager to share your research with your colleagues. Blog about it! Share your greatest grant writing tips with the internet. Record a YouTube video trying out different flutes and review what works and what doesn’t (like the beauty gurus do whenever a new makeup pallet comes out). A Full Moon closes out the month on October 24th in your 2nd house of income, supported at the same time by the Sun moving into your 8th house of banking and finances. You have purchased something rather large recently and the first installment in your payment plan is now due. Drag! Just remember: it is a small price to pay for a larger investment in your happiness and success.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Happy October, Taurus. The month begins with Venus going retrograde, first in your 7th house of relationships and eventually into your 6th house of the work and health routine. Venus often brings back people from our past and when it is in your house of relationships, it is likely that an old flute colleague will appear out of the blue. This is a good thing because as Venus backtracks into your 6th house, you will be connecting, and likely rehearsing, with this person on a regular basis. This is a great time to host a joint recital, performing both solo works as well as a few fun duets (Doppler, anybody?). When a New Moon appears in your 6th house on October 8th, you might even find yourself going on a series of Fall strolls through the falling leaves with your colleague, discussing new, wonderful business ideas for the future. Perhaps a joint masterclass? “Flutes in the Fall” would make a nice title for a CD of flute duets! On October 10th Mercury moves into your 7th house of relationships, making this an ideal time to participate in business meetings regarding your new project ideas. How do you make this CD project happen? What funding will you need and what companies will you need to hire? Who will do your PR and marketing? Meet with everybody and anybody and begin to talk out your projects with those who can make it happen. The month ends with a wonderful Full Moon in your sign while the Sun moves into your 7th house of relationships, both happening on October 24th. This is a clear indication that you and somebody close to you will both be in the spotlight. Schedule your joint recital during this time. Collaborate with somebody who brings out the best in you (and your flute playing). You will both be in the limelight and will complement each other using your unique talents.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

The Venus retrograde, beginning on October 6th, will start in your 6th house of the daily work and health routines, eventually backing in your 5th house of fun, games, children, and creativity. Often when Venus goes retrograde, people from the past make their way back into your life. You may also be reevaluating your financial system and asking yourself if you are truly investing your hard-earned cash into things that are meaningful to you. Because this retrograde begins in your 6th house, it is likely that you are taking a good look at your daily schedule and how you use your time to bring home the bacon, so to speak. Does your income truly reflect the amount of time that you put into your craft? Are there practical ways for you to eliminate some of the more typical time wasters (meetings, teleconferences, watching endless episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Netflix) to make room for new opportunities at work? How can you more effectively use the 24 hours you have each day to achieve a work/life balance that sustains (or hopefully) increases your income without sacrificing your sanity? Venus may even have the answer for you when it nosedives back into you 5th house. Joy. What in your life brings you joy? Is it teaching? Is it performing? Is it writing? How can you tie your income to the parts of your life that bring you the most joy? Venus is encouraging you to do more of the things you love and less of the things that are a drain on your energy and time. A New Moon puts this creative 5th house further in the spotlight on October 8th. This is a great time to start a new creative project. Plan a new recital program. Compose a piece of music. Spend some meditative time each day improvising whatever it is that is in your brain. You might be surprised what incredible ideas you can come up with when you are not bogged down by the mundane. Mercury moves into your 6th house of the daily work and health routine on October 10th. You may need to sit down with your boss on this day and work out a more realistic schedule that better helps you reach your goals. Could you work from home one day per week? If you are your own boss, you may need to discuss your schedule with your students or conductors and come up with a plan that works better for you. You don’t need to do all of the things all of the time. The month closes with both a Full Moon happening in your 12th house of behind the scenes activities and the Sun moving into your 6th house of the work and health routine. You are heading into the practice room at the end of the month to work on a new creative project, but you need to find room in your schedule to devote the time you’d like to spend there without sacrificing other work and family commitments. Be practical. An hour per day is much better than cram-practicing on Sundays.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Happy October, Cancer. October begins with Venus going retrograde first in your 5th house of creativity, joy, love, and children, making it’s way eventually into your 4th house of home and family. Often when Venus goes retrograde, people from the past make their way back into your life to help you along your journey. When it appears in your 5th house, you may be meeting again with a childhood acquaintance or even a flute teacher from your younger days. This person may be giving you a helping hand with a creative project you are currently working on. As the month progresses, you could also be visiting your childhood home, practicing in the places that used to inspire you in your younger days. It will be as if you had stepped momentarily back in time. What can you learn from the past that can be applied to your present or even your future flute goals? What differences are there in your past practice environment and your current situation? What can you do to bring the peace of the past to the present? A New Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family on October 8th, encouraging you to make the changes to your home studio environment in order to, in fact, bring in that wonderful sense of peace and productivity. Clear the clutter. Add a meaningful piece of art or arrange the furniture. Do you really need a huge couch in your studio or will having more space free you up to move around more during practice sessions?  On October 10th Mercury moves into your 5th house of creativity, joy, love, and children. You may be either recruiting a number of younger flute students during this time or blogging about an idea for a creative project. Get your audience on board with your ideas by getting your message out on social media. Are you starting a beginning flute choir? Gather your students and get the word out to other studios within your community. The month concludes with both a Full Moon in your 11th house of groups and communities and the Sun moving into your 5th house of joy and creativity on October 24th. This is a good time to reevaluate your participation in all of the ensembles on your docket. Is the time you devote to these groups professionally and/or personally rewarding? Do you feel drained or frustrated by the end of each rehearsal? You may need to remove the ones that no longer suit you from your life to make way for new opportunities in ensembles that bring you a greater challenge and more professional fulfillment. If your effort is not bringing you happiness, why are you giving away your time?

Leo (July 23-August 22)

October begins with the Venus retrograde on October 6th, moving from your 4th house of home and family and eventually back into your 3rd house of communications. This means drama. Venus usually brings people back from the past. Because this retrograde begins in your 4th house of home and family, it is likely that you will be hosting a relative at your home. This may be for simply a weekend or it may be for even longer. What is clear, however, is that when Venus backtracks into your 3rd house of communication, you may have to sit down with this relative for a heart-to-heart talk. They may not be okay with your late night or early morning practice routines and you may need to gently (or not so gently) remind them that they are a guest in your home. They do not own the joint! You could also just be helping them out in the short term if an unexpected life circumstance has thrown them for a loop and they need some temporary shelter. The heart-to-heart moment may simply be an opportunity to talk things out with them to find a light in the midst of dark times. A New Moon in your 3rd house of communication will help you draft a letter or email to help them move forward. You could also be using this energy for your own creative writing projects or YouTube channel. Are you working on a new piece with some crazy extended techniques? Put together a recording and upload! Do you have a great idea for a blog? Post it! Your writing skills are sharp at this time – Put them to good use! Mercury moves into your 4th house of home and family on October 10th. This is a good day to have your heart-to-heart talk with your relative. You may also need to bring other relatives into the discussion during this time. Your family is there to support you and your relative. If you need to host an intervention of some sort, go ahead and contact your love ones to make it happen. There is some major communication that needs to go on at home. Maybe don’t practice until 10:30 pm on those night… Give your family some peace, if possible. The month concludes with both a Full Moon in your 10th house of careers and goals and the Sun moving into your 4th house of home and family on October 24th. Your family will return the karmic favor at the end of the month by supporting you to develop some of your career goals. Let them serve as your mock audition committee or practice interview committee. Perform a family recital for them! This month is all about helping each other. Give them support and space and they will give you enthusiastic encouragement.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

The Venus retrograde kicks off the month on October 6th, starting in your 3rd house of communications and moving back into your 2nd house of income. This is a great placement for a possible promotion or exciting new job offer from an old boss or colleague. Venus will bring back someone from your past that will likely email you out of the blue during this time. After a few emails back and forth, they may have the scoop on a new job or gig opportunity. Take them up on this! Venus likes to show you the money (just be careful not to spend it as soon as you get it). Reevaluate how this new opportunity will help increase your income and what you will need to do in order to make it happen. This blast from your past is helping to bring something very positive into your life. Make sure you are ready for it! A New Moon in your 2nd house puts the cards on the table on October 8th. You will find out just want this new journey will be and you are excited for the new challenge. Perhaps it is a position with a great, local ensemble or a collaborative lecture series at a local college. Whatever it is, it will either directly or indirectly help give you a boost to your income. On October 10th, Mercury moves into your 3rd house of communications. You need to get some advice before moving forward. Seek out advisors or other flute friends to talk out the pros and cons of bringing this new job situation into your life. Will it help advance your career and to what extent? What is the price of success and will the rewards outweigh the discomfort or time commitment? Have your other flute friends been down this road before? The month comes to a close on October 24th when a Full Moon in your 9th house encourages you to plan a trip. Audition time, anyone? Pack your bags and get ready to wow your audition committees. You are in the driver’s seat for this one. The Sun will also be moving into your 3rd house of communications on October 24th, helping you to be quite charming in all that you say and/or write. Post a fantastic blog about your personal audition tips or record a wonderful Vlog documenting your journey to the audition. The internet will dig what you have to say.

Happy October!
