Happy New Year! January 2019 is bookended by two eclipses – A solar eclipse on January 5th and a lunar eclipse on January 20th. We will all face a number of new starts and bittersweet endings. Embrace all of these changes. All of the planets are going direct this month, so nothing will stand in your way from moving forward. Be careful not to overindulge when Venus joins Jupiter on January 8th. These two party animals enjoy the finer things of life and have a difficult time saying “no” to good times, good friends, and good food. Set up your New Year’s Resolutions thoughtfully at the beginning of the month and revise at the end, taking all of the changes January brings into consideration.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 1st house. New year, brand new you! This eclipse will help you completely reinvent your life and your flute playing, giving you the tools to finally be the flutist that you have always wanted to be. What are your goals for the new year? How can you restructure your practice routine to achieve everything on your to-do list? Embrace change.
Mercury moves into your 1st house also on January 5th. With your new goals in hand, it is time to put your plans into action. Send all of the emails that you have put off and arrange any interviews or auditions that may have intimidated you in the past. Be fearless!
Venus joins Jupiter in your 12th house on January 8th. Spend some quality time in the practice room working on new pieces that inspire you. You will want to practice anything and everything. Try to narrow your list to a few favorites.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 8th house on January 20th. Tax time! Get a jump start on the chaos of tax season by pulling up your Schedule C and gathering all receipts and invoices. This eclipse will help you organize all of your deductions.
The Sun moves into your 2nd house on January 21st. Is “find a new job” or “promotion” on your New Year’s Resolution list? When the Sun enters your 2nd house, you may be inspired to tidy up your CV and hit the job (or audition) boards.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 2nd house on January 25th. If you are asked to audition or interview for a new teaching job, wait until Mercury enters this house to meet with your potential new boss. You will be able to sell yourself (and your playing) to better fit the position after the 25th.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 12th house. You are not quite ready to make your list of New Year’s resolutions. Spend the beginning of the the month reflecting on what it is that you truly want to accomplish this year. Is it something material (like a new flute), a new teaching opportunity at research institution, a position in a new ensemble, or a new creative project (a book or a cd recording, for example). Make this year’s list of goals smaller yet meaningful.
Mercury moves into your 12th house also on January 5th. This is a good time to draft outlines for your most important creative or writing projects. Where will you start? What materials will you need? Who do you need to contact or interview? Do you need to put together grant proposals? Use this time to come up with a plan.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 11th house on January 8th. You are about to hit the Winter/Spring performance season running! Luckily you are quite prepared and ready to create beautiful music in both your large and small ensembles. Others will be quite inspired by your contagious positive energy and will enjoy reading through some new tunes with you.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 7th house on January 20th. Sometimes we just need to cut the cord on toxic relationships. It may be difficult and painful, but if there are people in your life that always make you feel less than awesome, or that hold you back from pursuing something meaningful, it may be time to distance yourself from them for a while. This eclipse will help you find delicate ways to break ties with those who no longer lift you up.
The Sun moves into your 1st house on January 21st. The spotlight is now on you! This is a great time to host a recital (or at least a party). You may also be considering ways to reinvent your flute playing. Would you like a new sound or a lighter articulation? What exercises will you incorporate into you daily routine to accomplish this?
Mercury joins the Sun in your 1st house on January 25th. Since you will naturally be a bit more popular during this time, this is a good opportunity to discuss your future goals with highly influential people. You will be quite articulate about how you wish to change and what steps you will need to take to get there. Take your conductor out for coffee!
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 11th house. This eclipse is shining a light on the groups you perform with. Are there other groups that you would like to join (or at least serve as a sub)? Are you happy with the groups you are performing with right now? How can you spend more time performing with musicians that inspire you?
Mercury moves into your 11th house also on January 5th. As you reflect on the importance of performing groups in your life, you may begin to consider forming your own smaller chamber groups or flute choirs. Mercury will help strike up conversations with your colleagues about their willingness to start something new.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 10th house on January 8th. Your New Year’s Resolution list might include the words, “ask for a promotion.” Venus in your 10th house will help you sit down with your boss and discuss opportunities for advancement. Your ideas are sound and the way you articulate them during this time is quite eloquent.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 6th house on January 20th. This energy suggests that something in your daily work or health routine is about to change. Perhaps a new opportunity at work will have you ending another project or job responsibility that no longer interests you. Use this time to train somebody new to take over old tasks.
The Sun moves into your 12th house on January 21st. You will likely be locking yourself in the practice room for the next four weeks. You have a lot of music to practice this season and not a lot of time to do it. Organize your practice time well and make sure to establish weekly, monthly, and longer term musical goals.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 12th house on January 25th. This is a good time to start a YouTube channel or establish a flute blog. You will need to do some background work to make sure your channel or website looks great and works well. Be patient with the process and ensure that your content is professional, creative, and interesting. Post something others have not yet thought about.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 10th house. Your focus this year will be entirely on your flute playing career. You have likely become a bit impatient waiting for your proverbial ships to come in and are ready to take career matters into your own hands. Where do you want to be? Do you want to be a recording artist? An orchestral musician? A YouTube sensation? A flute professor at a prestigious music school? How will you get there? Who can you meet with that lead you in the right direction?
Mercury moves into your 10th house also on January 5th. Is there an expert in your field that could help advise you in your career goals? Another professional flutist you could interview, perhaps? An old college mentor that you could meet with? A flute idol you could email? Mercury will help you make these important connections.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 9th house on January 8th. This is a great time to plan a vacation. Escape the winter blues by booking plane tickets to Hawaii in February or spend a weekend in Las Vegas taking selfies with Elvis. You deserve a break!
A lunar eclipse appears in your 5th house on January 20th. A creative project that you may have been struggling with recently is coming to an end. It is finally finished and you could not be happier. Put the finishing touches on your creation and send it out into the world. You are ready! Launch that CD!
The Sun moves into your 11th house on January 21st. Part of moving into a new career direction often involves auditioning for new groups. Use the energy of the Sun to spruce up your excerpts and hit the audition circuits. You need to connect to new musicians at this time and the Sun will help you get there.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 11th house on January 25th. This is a great time to set up those auditions and interviews. Contact personnel managers and arrange a number of meetings over the next four weeks. You are ready for a challenge and are craving something new.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 9th house. Make some concrete travel plans at the beginning of the month. Where do you want to visit in 2019? Have you applied to orchestral auditions around the country? Book those tickets now! Have you always wanted to experience the music of the great orchestras in Europe? Plan that trip of a lifetime!
Mercury moves into your 9th house also on January 5th. This is a great time to chat with others about your travel plans. Your flute professor may have some great suggestions for flute related locations to visit along your journey. Blog about all of the places you wish to travel.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 8th house on January 8th. Tax time, Taurus! With Venus in your financial house, you may uncover a tax rebate or special deduction that you did not know about. Surprise windfall! Maybe purchasing that new headjoint at the NFA Convention was an even better investment than you initially thought.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 4th house on January 20th. Something in your studio environment is no longer working for you. Is it that clunky upright piano that is never in tune? Is your desk just too big for the size of the room? Do you really need three music stands? Use the energy of this lunar eclipse to change things up a bit. Dispose of any furniture that has outlived it’s purpose.
The Sun moves into your 10th house on January 21st. Turn your attention to your career at the end of the month. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Performing on a large stage with a prominent orchestra or teaching in a popular community flute studio? What steps can you take to get there?
Mercury joins the Sun in your 10th house on January 25th. Who do you need to contact to get your career rolling in the right direction? Do you need to have a sit down with your boss? Is there an advisor you could meet with? Use Mercury’s energy to network with those in authority.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 8th house. One of your New Year’s resolution may be to purchase a new flute. Unfortunately, you may not yet have a way to finance this goal. Use the energy of this Solar eclipse to visit your local banking institution and work out a savings or loan plan with a reasonable monthly payment. Purchasing a new flute may not be the insurmountable task that you originally thought it was.
Mercury moves into your 8th house also on January 5th. Mercury will help you clearly communicate your financial objectives to your banking advisor. Make sure they have all your information, including the name, brand, and price of the instrument you intend to purchase and from what retailer.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 7th house on January 8th. You will be quite popular during this time. Connect with new flute friends both online and within your local community. Host a flute choir sight reading session or simple get-together and exchange some of your best performing and teaching tips.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 3rd house on January 20th. There is a writing project that is likely coming to close. Have you be writing a book or an article? Proofread your work and prepare your masterpiece for final submission.
The Sun moves into your 9th house on January 21st. The cold winter months may have you craving a getaway to a sunnier location far, far away. Can you turn this into a business trip? Is there a conference that you can speak or perform at in a beautiful destination? Take a chance and apply!
Mercury joins the Sun in your 9th house on January 25th. Use this energy to discuss your travel ambitions on your flute blog. What topics and/or pieces would you like to present at this conference? What feedback can you illicit from other flutists? Post your ideas on social media platforms to reach a broader audience.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 7th house. The year begins with new friends. Reach out to other flutists both online and in your community to build your professional network. Chances are good that you will learn wonderful new techniques from each other.
Mercury moves into your 7th house also on January 5th. Join a new flute community on social media during this time. There is a whole world of flutists, both professional and amateur, that crave something new and interesting in our craft. Share your ideas and connect with others.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 6th house on January 8th. After a year of ups and downs in your work arena, you are finally on top of your game at work this month. Relationships with your flute friends and students will be smooth. You will also make some great headway on new music for the Spring concert season.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 2nd house on January 20th. One of your income streams is about to reach an end. You may have seen this coming for a while, but the season of “out with the old, in with the new” has inspired you to make serious changes for the better. If those affiliate links on your blog are not drumming up much attention (and really just annoying your readers), you might consider removing them to focus your attention on advertising online Skype lessons.
The Sun moves into your 8th house on January 21st. Tax time, Cancer! Your 1099s are flooding into your inbox during this time. Spend the next four weeks organizing all of your documents, invoices, and receipts. Get an early start this year.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 8th house on January 25th. Make sure to contact all agencies and individuals that made any types of payments to you this year to avoid any tax forms from falling between the cracks. You may be entitled to more deductions than you realize.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 6th house. The year begins with a sudden new opportunity at work. Are you in line for a promotion? Is there an audition for a higher chair placement in your orchestra? Go for it! Does your conductor want you to play principal on Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite this Spring? Get ready to shine (or dance, in this case).
Mercury moves into your 6th house also on January 5th. Sit down and discuss the details of your new promotion with your boss (or conductor). How many rehearsals will you have to perfect your part? What are your new playing responsibilities? How often will sectionals be scheduled and what is your role?
Venus joins Jupiter in your 5th house on January 8th. Venus in your 5th is all about playing from the heart. It is not enough to understand the notes on the page. Find the deeper interpretation buried between the ledger lines
A lunar eclipse appears in your 1st house on January 20th. With all of the changes happening in your job, you may find yourself wanting to completely reinvent your flute playing from the ground up. Use each day to focus on different aspect of flute playing (tone on Tuesdays, articulation on Fridays).
The Sun moves into your 7th house on January 21st. This would be a wonderful time to schedule a series of sectionals with the other woodwinds in your orchestra. Not only will you fine tune your collective ensemble skills, but this could also be a great opportunity to make new friends. New friends may lead to new chamber music collaborations. Keep an open mind.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 7th house on January 25th. With whom do you need to discuss the scheduling and planning of these sectionals? Can you share leadership responsibilities with your clarinet or oboe counterpart? Arrange a section leader lunch to plan rehearsal priorities.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 5th house. There is a creative project on your New Year’s Resolution list that requires your undying attention this month. This may be a CD project, a book, or an upcoming recital. Brainstorm new ideas to add to your project and get a jumpstart on production.
Mercury moves into your 5th house also on January 5th. Blog about your creative project. Drum up some interest among the flute community using various social media platforms. You may encounter a number of other flutists with similar interests and specialties.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 4th house on January 8th. Spend some time at home at the beginning of the month curled up with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book. The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green or The Talent Code are both great choices.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 12th house on January 20th. You will be heading to the practice room at the end of the month, possibly to put the finishing touches on your recital music. Try to practice smarter, not harder, during this time to avoid any unnecessary burnout.
The Sun moves into your 6th house on January 21st. The time and energy you have invested in your creative project may be distracting you from your day-to-day job responsibilities. Use this time to re-prioritize your schedule. Are there routines you can cut out of your life temporarily while you work on your masterpiece?
Mercury joins the Sun in your 6th house on January 25th. You may need to sit down with your boss to discuss flexible scheduling or working from home one day per week in order to work on your creative project. You likely have too much on your plate and are suffering from perfectionist’s paralysis. It’s okay to say “no” to a few smaller requests.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 4th house. Time to pack up the Christmas tree and holiday décor and move the furniture around in your studio space. Start the year off with a studio makeover. Add a new piece of artwork or spruce up the window trimmings. Make sure any office furniture you are using does not clutter up your practice space.

Get your family involved in any recital and/or audition prep on your docket by asking them to serve as the jury in a mock audition or the audience of a recital hall. Invite your super critical uncle and your skeptical sister-in-law to participate in order to challenge your ability to play gracefully under fire.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 3rd house on January 8th. This is a great time to start drafting an article for a flute magazine. You have a lot to say and some great tips to share with the world. Writing will come easier to you this month with Venus in your house of communications.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 11th house on January 20th. There is a performing group that you currently belong to that no longer works for you. It may be that you simply are overcommitted this spring and need to cut down on the number of rehearsals. It could also be that the group is just not right for you. If you must move on to accept new, exciting opportunities, the Universe will help you say goodbye.
The Sun moves into your 5th house on January 21st. You are bursting with creative energy! Planning a spring recital? What repertoire would you like to program? Where would you like to host your performance? Would you like to invite your chamber music groups to perform a piece or two? Start planning!

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 3rd house. Writing, writing, and more writing. The month begins with a storm of writing projects. You will likely be locking yourself in your office with a laptop, creating pages and pages of creative and eloquent prose. Post those blogs! Submit those articles! Draft those book chapters. You have a lot to share about the flute and an entire world of flutists ready to read your work.
Mercury moves into your 3rd house also on January 5th. Mercury will also help you connect with others that can promote your writing projects. Your view count will likely go up during this time. Post short examples from your writing projects on your social media platforms to drum up additional interest. Network and share your ideas with fellow flutists. Everybody is interested in what you have to say.
Venus joins Jupiter in your 2nd house on January 8th. This is a wonderful placement that may likely increase your income. Renewed interest in your blog may also lead to more interest in your studio business, online Skype lessons, or even payments from your YouTube channel or affiliate links. Be careful not to spend all of your earnings in one place!
A lunar eclipse appears in your 10th house on January 20th. Something in your career is coming to an end. You may have seen this coming for a while now. You are so invested in your writing this year that you may find yourself struggling to fit in enough time for all of your performing commitments and studio teaching responsibilities. Something must be downsized (or at least put on hold for the immediate future).
The Sun moves into your 4th house on January 21st. You are craving a change in your environment, Scorpio. Renovate your home practice space with a new, inspirational piece of art. Swap offices with a family member. Purchase a new studio mirror. Upgrade your office equipment. New Year: New Studio.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 4th house on January 25th. Have a chat with your family regarding your work schedule. You have been so busy with work this month that they may be feeling a bit neglected. Do your best to establish a better work/life balance to avoid burnout.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
The month begins with a Solar eclipse on January 5th in your 2nd house. Money, money, money. You are on a quest to increase your income in 2019. What recruitment efforts can you make to attract more students into your studio practice? What other paid performance opportunities are available in your community? Are there any performing or teaching jobs available on the job boards. Apply. Apply. Apply.
Mercury moves into your 2nd house also on January 5th. This is a great time to schedule any auditions for new performance opportunities or interviews for teaching jobs. You will perform well and communicate quite clearly to the hiring committee. #nailedit
Venus joins Jupiter in your 1st house on January 8th. You will be extremely popular during this time. Use your newfound popularity to host a successful, and well attended, recital. This is also a great time to think about reinventing the way you present yourself. Need a makeover? Go for it? Need a new recital outfit? It’s on sale! Need to revamp your concert shoes? (Heels are a bit impractical anyways – Switch to flats.). Treat yo’ self.
A lunar eclipse appears in your 9th house on January 20th. You may be returning from a trip around this time (perhaps from an audition). Make the most of your travel time and try to enjoy yourself. This lunar eclipse will likely put the breaks on future travel plans.
The Sun moves into your 3rd house on January 21st. The end of the month will have you writing up a storm. You may have been inspired during your travels to research something interesting about the flute and/or flute playing. Did you experience a bit of performance anxiety at your audition? How did it effect your performance? What exactly do you know about stage fright and what techniques are available to help deal with this phenomena? Research and write an article or blog post.
Mercury joins the Sun in your 3rd house on January 25th. Once you have drafted your article, send it out into the world either for publication consideration or simply post it to your flute blog and advertise on social media.
