Happy February! Did you survive the solar and lunar eclipses last month? Many of us have recently experienced a number of exciting beginnings and bittersweet endings. The good news is that February will help you regroup while the Universe remains relatively quiet. This is also a great time to execute any contracts and update technology in preparation for the impending Mercury retrograde in March. Use February as a pre-Spring cleaning month and organize everything from your music library to your (ever-changing) rehearsal schedule.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Venus moves into your 12th house of behind the scenes activities on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. The beginning of the month will have you spending some quality time in the practice room playing through some old favorites. This is a great opportunity to work on any new tone or articulation techniques that you’ve picked up recently using repertoire you already know and love.

A New Moon appears in your sign on February 4th. You are searching for opportunities to reinvent yourself this month, Aquarius. Something is about to enter your life that will completely change your playing, your teaching, or both. This could be in the form of a new piece of repertoire or a new student that enters your studio with compelling new ideas about music. Embrace these new ideas and rebuild your flute playing values from the ground up.

Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income on February 11th. Lesson inquiries will begin to pour in this month. Spring competition season is almost upon us! There are several students searching for some last minute help. This will result in a nice increase to your income for the Spring.

Mars moves into your 4th house of home and family on February 15th. As the Winter weather slowly begins to improve, you may find yourself tackling that home studio fix-it list. Piano out of tune? Call up a tuner. Music library a mess? Reserve a weekend to organize your collection. Window leaking cold air? Call a repairman. Mars will help you make your practice environment more organized and efficient.  

A Full Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance on February 19th. Tax time, Aquarius! Start gathering all of those student invoices from 2018. Do you have any write-offs for your Schedule C? Sort your convention expenses, instrument repair receipts, teaching 1099s, and any other documentation from sheet music purchases. Get a head start on your tax forms before the Mercury retrograde hits next month.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Venus moves into your 11th house of groups and communities on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. This is a great time to get together with your chamber music group and read through some new music. You will all get along quite well and your musical ideas will be playing well off one another. If you have been struggling to find graceful non-musical cues for beginnings and endings of pieces, this would be a nice time to experiment with different types of movements and gestures.

A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind the scenes projects on February 4th. You will begin working on a number of new pieces in the practice room this month. Keep an open mind about everything you play. Something that may seem outside of your capabilities right now might just end up impressing the audience at your next performance.

Mercury moves into your sign on February 11th. You certainly have a lot to say this month and an entire world waiting to listen. Use this time to blog about something that interests you about the flute on your flute blog. Create new videos for your YouTube channel. Write an article and submit your work to an online journal.

Mars moves into your 3rd house of communication on February 15th. This is a great time to send all of the emails that you have been sitting on since the New Year. Do you need some flute advice from an old instructor? Send them a short note and meet up for coffee. Interested in a possible teaching opportunity at the local community college? Email the personnel coordinator or department chair for more information.

A Full Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships on February 19th. This could be a time of beginnings and endings in your relationships. Is there a colleague that you just don’t mesh with? How can you repair that relationship? Do you need to talk things over? Is there another musician that you would like to perform with? Can you program a piece on your next recital that includes them? Make new friends and cut out any toxic relationships.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Venus moves into your 10th house of career goals on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. A new change to your career is on the horizon. Do you have an interview or an audition scheduled during this time? Venus will help you impress your interview panel, moving you to the next step in the process. If you are already in a job, you could be receiving an opportunity to move in a new direction. Flute 2 to Flute 1 is definitely a possibility.

A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities on February 4th. You are about to join a new performing group. This could be a larger group (such as a band or orchestra) or a smaller chamber ensemble composed of your favorite musician friends. Collaborate and share ideas with your new colleagues.

Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind the scenes projects on February 11th. You will be participating in a number of rehearsals (both previously scheduled and unscheduled) during this time. Try to retain your focus and take as many notes as possible to avoid repeating mistakes or overlooking important cues. This may be an exhausting time but if you are prepared, it will go quite smoothly.

Mars moves into your 2nd house of income on February 15th. You will be searching for a new gig, new students, or a new job opportunity mid-month. Mars will give you the motivation to advertise your services, update that CV, revamp your website, and submit applications left and right. A boost to your income may be right around the corner.

How will a new teaching schedule effect your rehearsal schedule? Will you have enough personal practice time to prepare for each performance? Carefully consider the impact this new opportunity will have on your daily life. If you can make it work (and keep your sanity), go for it!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Venus moves into your 9th house of travel on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. Time to plan your next trip, Taurus. With Venus in your 9th house, you may be envisioning a fabulous adventure to a far away destination. Be sure to catch a good orchestra performance or fantastic local music show while you are there. How do the musical traditions reflect the surrounding community culture?

A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals on February 4th. You could be moving in a brand new direction in your career this month. Are you a performer wishing to shift your attention onto teaching? Or a teacher that would like to hit the audition circuit again? This New Moon will help clarify what the next steps are to achieving your goal.

Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities on February 11th. You will be quite busy with rehearsals and sectionals during this time. With Mercury in this house, however, it will be easy to communicate both musically and non-musically with your colleagues.

Mars moves into your sign on February 15th. Time to roll up your sleeves and get to work! You will be eager to tackle literally everything on your to-do list. Use this incredible energy as practice motivation for your upcoming recital.

A Full Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy on February 19th. You may be wrapping up a creative project at the end of the month. Have you been working on a new composition? A CD recording? A series of YouTube videos? This is a great time put the finishing touches on your work.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Venus moves into your 8th house of banking and finance on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. If a large purchase was on your list of New Year’s Resolutions last month (such as a new instrument), this would be a good time to put together a savings plan or speak to your local banking institution about ways to achieve your goals. Venus will help you attract the resources to effectively start your savings journey.

A New Moon appears in your 9th house of travel on February 4th. It may seem a bit early, but this New Moon will inspire you to start planning an epic summer vacation. Is there a summer music program overseas that you would like to participate in this year? What are the audition requirements? Are there funding opportunities? The Universe is urging you to go for it!

Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals on February 11th. Meet with your advisor or a mentor to discuss your career goals. Where do you see yourself in a year? Five years? Ten years? How will you get there? Do you wish to be a full-time performer? A part-time teacher? What action steps can you take at this time?

Mars moves into your 12th house of behind the scenes activities on February 15th. This is a difficult house for Mars to be in as the planet of action typically does not like to be trapped behind the scenes. For musicians, however, “behind the scenes” often refers to the practice room. With Mars in this house, you will no doubt get a lot of practicing done. Use this time to practice everything under the sun (including Taffanel and Gaubert).

A Full Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family on February 19th. Your unending practice sessions at home may be driving your family crazy. Try to divide your time between an offsite practice location to give them a break. If that is just not possible, try to practice during times when they are not home. Devote your evening hours to your loved ones rather than Bach, Mozart, and Chaminade.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Venus moves into your 7th house of relationships on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. If you have recently been getting into squabbles with the other flutists in your section, Venus will help you smooth things over at the beginning of the month. This is a great time to repair any relationships with colleagues that may have been complicated by competition.

A New Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance on February 4th. This is a great time to start working on your taxes. Need help preparing your Schedule C forms? There are several great resources for musicians on the internet. Gather all of your documents in advance including any travel receipts, lesson invoices, or 1099 forms from gigs you performed earlier in the year.

Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel on February 11th. You may be planning an audition trip mid-month. Make sure to double check all of your itineraries and purchase travel insurance in case you need to extend your stay to perform in multiple audition rounds.

Mars moves into your 11th house of groups and communities on February 15th. You will be arranging a number of additional rehearsals to iron out complicated technical bits of music with your chamber groups during this time. Don’t get too carried away with your enthusiasm to make everything perfect. Your colleagues may not have the same stamina that you have at the moment.

A Full Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication on February 19th. There is a writing project that is coming to an end at the end of the month. Are you working on a book? An article? A series of blog posts. Proofread your work and submit the final product to your publisher.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Venus moves into your 6th house of daily job and health routines on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. Pour yourself into something that you enjoy doing either at work or at the gym (or both!). If the practice room seems confining, seek out opportunities to perform at churches, schools, or retirement homes for some good, old fashion performing experience. If you love teaching masterclasses, host a few free events at local schools.

A New Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships on February 4th. Make friends with a new flutist in town and collaborate on a joint recital. So often in this business we find ourselves competing for all of the same jobs, chair placements, and students. It is high time we start sharing our talents with one another.

Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance on February 11th. This is a great time to have a chat with a tax preparer or a financial advisor. You may have had a lot of unusual expenses in 2018 that could bring down your adjusted gross income quite a bit. You may also want to start saving for a major purchase in the near future (such as a new instrument). This is a great time to devise a reasonable savings plan.

Mars moves into your 10th house of career goals on February 15th. It is time to achieve all of the career goals from last month’s New Year’s Resolutions list! Gather your courage and apply to those teaching jobs that are just outside of your reach. Go for the gold even if you think you will fail. What do you have to lose?

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Venus moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. This is a good time to work on important creative projects. Are you working on a composition? A recording? A book? Venus will help make your ideas a bit more cohesive and smooth out anything awkward or just not working.

A New Moon appears in your 6th house of daily job and health routines on February 4th. You may be receiving a promotion after this date, Virgo! Something in your daily schedule is about to change for the better. Embrace whatever is offered to you from the Universe. If there is an audition announcement for an ensemble in your community, brush up your excerpts and go for it. If a new teaching job is posted that speaks to you, apply!

In order to do this, however, you will need to say goodbye to something. It won’t be easy but it is necessary to move forward. Have courage!

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Practice at home and involve your family in your recital or audition preparations. They will really enjoy serving as your mock jury.

A New Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy on February 4th. You may be starting to work on a new creative project. Planning a recital? This is a great time to check out new repertoire. Working on a CD project? Make a few sample recordings to review.

Mercury moves into your 6th house of daily job and health routines on February 11th. Gather your courage, update your CV, and ask your boss for a raise. I know it may be scary, but start the conversation by considering the ways you could reach the next step in your professional development. Could you sub in another orchestra to prepare for principal roles in your current group? Could you earn some extra income by serving as a stage coordinator or music librarian in your ensemble? Explore all possibilities during this time.

Mars moves into your 8th house of banking and finance on February 15th. Mars wants you to get your taxes done early. This is probably a good idea considering that the Mercury retrograde next month will likely result in setbacks, delays, and miscommunications. Gather all of your receipts and 1099 forms. Schedule an appointment with your tax preparer. Research deductions that might apply this year.

A Full Moon appears in your 12th house of behind the scenes projects on February 19th. A project that you have been working on may be coming to an end. If things are just not working, it’s okay to let it go. If you are be struggling to learn a piece that just doesn’t speak to you, move on to one that is truly inspiring.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Venus moves into your 3rd house of communication on February 4th, joining Pluto and Saturn. Are you working on any writing projects? Articles? Books? Blog posts? Venus will help smooth out any tricky sections of writing that may have given you a bit of writer’s block recently. Do a bit of careful proofreading around this time.

This could be simple upgrades to your studio (new furniture, a new piece of art, an office fountain), or you could be moving to a new home or even a new city. The New Moon will help you make the most of these changes.

If you have been working on a creative project recently (possibly in conjunction with your writing), this a good time to get the word out about your work. There may be someone out there interested in collaborating or helping market your project. Network and advertise during this time.

It is not always easy for Scorpios to be social butterflies, but when Mars moves into your 7th house, you will be inspired to make some new flute friends (both online and offline). This could be in the form of a new student or a bonus for some of the extra work you have been putting in at your day job. Congrats! Just don’t spend it all in one place.

This Full Moon will help light the way down the road you should be following instead. Follow your instincts and end what needs to be ended during this time.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

No matter how well you play, your audience will be enthralled by your repertoire choices and impressed by your exceptional stage presence.
