Dr. G’s November Flute Horoscopes

Happy November! Welcome to Scorpio season. Are you ready for some life, death, and transfiguration? We will all need to get through a pesky Mercury retrograde first. The standard warnings apply – back up all technology, avoid signing contracts, be prepared for the unexpected, etc., but also try to remember that Mercury retrogrades force us to take a step back and look at the larger picture. What can we do to improve the way we do things? What items demand more of our attention? Are we being deliberate in the way we practice, perform, and teach? Ask yourself some of these questions at the beginning of the month. Energies will lighten up at the end of the month just in time for the Holiday season. Try to shift your attention onto family, friends, and everything that brings you joy. Scorpio season can be a super intense time, but the progress you make this month will be well worth the effort.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 1st house of identity. Things are going a bit haywire right now, Scorp. You may discover unforeseen issues with something that is very important to you. Sadly, your Nielsen Concerto is not as clean as you thought! Try to be patient with yourself during this retrograde and learn from your mistakes.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 2nd house of income on November 2nd. This is a great combo for making some money doing what you love. Venus will help you attract lucrative gigs and work projects that provide beautiful, priceless moments of self-expression. It may be as simple as playing through a few unaccompanied pieces with your case open at the Mall or as impressive as performing a solo with a renowned orchestra.

A Full Moon appears in the 7th house of relationships on November 12th. There may be a toxic relationship in your life that needs to change or even come to an end. Be honest with yourself during this time. What do you really want from this connection? What needs to be better communicated? Take your fellow flutist out to clear the air if necessary.

Mars moves into the 1st house of identity on November 20th. When Mars shifts into your 1st house, you will be ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work. You may have just come out of period of intense practice and are now ready to perform. Book all of the gigs. Participate in all of the local masterclasses. Host as many recitals as possible. Perform with your chamber group.

The Sun moves into the 2nd house of income on November 23rd. Your focus shifts onto your job at the end of the month. What can you do to improve your income? Can you recruit new students to your practice? Can you organize paid masterclasses around the area? Are there teaching jobs available to you in the local area? Apply!

A New Moon appears in the 2nd house of income on November 26th. You may be accepting a new job around the time of this New Moon. Congrats! The new responsibilities may be a bit overwhelming, but the financial and professional gains will be well worth your time and effort.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 12th house of behind the scenes projects. Things may be going haywire in the practice room during this retrograde. Try not to lose your mind by practicing the same run over, and over, and over again. You may not be able to achieve that perfect three octave D Major scale during this time. Try to remain calm and stick to slow, deliberate practice.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 1st house of identity on November 2nd. You will be incredibly popular when Venus moves into your house of identity. This is a great time to host a recital or a masterclass. Others will really dig your flute playing and your interesting repertoire selection.

A Full Moon appears in the 6th house of work and health routines on November 12th. Something in your daily schedule will need to change around the time of this Full Moon. Are you fitting in enough time to prepare for all of the groups you perform with? Are you teaching too many students? Have you signed up for one too many masterclasses? Try to cut down on daily commitments that really do not serve a purpose and streamline to the essential tasks you need to complete each day. Don’t forget to squeeze in some exercise while you are at it!

Mars moves into the 12th house of behind the scenes projects on November 20th. Grab a water bottle, a metronome, and a pencil because you will be setting up camp in the practice room when Mars moves into your 12th house. Practice all of the things, but also examine the way you practice. How efficient are your practice sessions? Are you incorporating an appropriate balance between scales, etudes, and repertoire? How can you better restructure your time?

The Sun moves into the 1st house of identity on November 23rd. The focus will be on you at the end of the month. You may need a makeover, either personally (time for a new recital outfit!) or your instrument may need a few new bells and whistles. Take your flute into the shop and explore upgrade options. Are you in the market for a new headjoint? A new flute bag? A shiny new crown. Dream big!

A New Moon appears in the 1st house of identity on November 26th. Whatever you were dreaming about on the 23rd may become a reality around the time of the New Moon. Go shopping! Price new instruments! Revamp your gear.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may find yourself involved in a number of misunderstandings with other musicians in your orchestra. Your intonation could be completely out of whack due to crazy November temperature fluctuations or perhaps you are having trouble agreeing on a beat. Remember to remain calm during this retrograde. Take your time and listen to everything around you.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 12th house of behind the scenes projects on November 2nd. Take a break from the scales and etudes on your daily to-do list and practice something that brings you joy (even if it is just some good old Chaminade). Is there something new to find in works you have loved for years? How can you breathe new life into old favorites?

A Full Moon appears in the 5th house of creativity and joy on November 12th. A creative project you have been working on lately will be coming to an end during the time of this Full Moon. Have you been writing a book or recording a CD? The hard work is almost over. Put the finishing touches on your work and muster up the courage to put your work on display.

Mars moves into the 11th house of groups and communities on November 20th. Mars will encourage you to arrange a number of sectionals and extra rehearsals during this time. Try not to overwork your colleagues (they will not be a fan of the extra work). Rehearse smarter, not necessarily harder.

The Sun moves into the 12th house of behind the scenes projects on November 23rd. Your focus will be on practicing when the Sun moves into this house. You have a lot of music to practice, true, but you might also want to take a look at how you practice. How can you streamline your routine? What are your goals (both in the short term and the long term)? What do you need to prioritize on the smaller scale (technical passages, breathing) and on the larger scale (interpretation, endurance)?

A New Moon appears in the 12th house of behind the scenes activities on November 26th. You may be inspired to learn a new piece or add a few new bits of repertoire to your practice routine at the end of the month. Keep an open mind and try to learn something new. Is there a work that particularly speaks to you? Add this to the lineup for your next recital!

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 10th house of career goals. You are going to be rethinking your career goals at the beginning of the month. Something just isn’t going as smoothly as you thought it would. Are you on a performance career track and your heart just isn’t into it anymore? Do you instead enjoying teaching or writing? How can you shift your attention onto the activities you enjoy?

Venus joins Jupiter in the 11th house of groups and communities on November 2nd. This is a good time to get together with your orchestra mates and discuss common issues or shared performing objectives. Share solutions to some of your most pesky performing issues. Do the flutes tend to rush the beat, leaving the clarinets in the dust? Are the bassoons on the low side of the pitch? How is the balance? Have some open chats about the best ways to move forward as a group.

A Full Moon appears in the 4th house of home and family on November 12th. Something at home needs to change around the time of this Full Moon. You may be moving to a new house or apartment. You may also be discussing difficult schedule changes with your family. They want you to spend more time at home and your work responsibilities make that impossible. Can you practice at home? How much of your work can you do from home?

Mars moves into the 10th house of career goals on November 20th. Brush up your CV because you are about to hit the job market! Apply to literally everything. Go to all of the interviews and auditions. Make sure all of your references are on board to say great things about you, your skills, and your work ethic. This is the time to make large strides in your career.

The Sun moves into the 11th house of groups and communities on November 23rd. The focus will shift onto the groups you play in at the end of the month. You may be rehearsing up a storm in preparation for the Holiday recital/concert season. Remember to take breaks and hydrate to avoid burnout/exhaustion.

A New Moon appears in the 11th house of groups and communities on November 26th. You may be joining yet another performing group. Are you on the sub list for a local orchestra? The New Moon may present you with an opportunity to fill in! Show your stuff and be the best darn team player you can possibly be. They may just call you back in the future.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 9th house of travel. If you are planning to travel at the beginning of the month, you may find that your travel plans unravel unexpectedly. Do what you can to prepare ahead of time with a Plan B or C. Leave extra early for the airport and try to remain calm in the face of late planes, trains, or automobiles.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 10th house of career goals on November 2nd. This is a great time to schedule a meeting with an advisor or a renowned flutist that you really admire. These individuals will help point you in the right direction and may have some great ideas about how to redirect your career. Use the Venus energy to attract the right resources to move your career in an exciting new direction.

A Full Moon appears in the 3rd house of communication on November 12th. Are you writing a book or an article? Now is the time to put the finishing touches on your writing. Hand your work off to a second pair of eyes for proofreading purposes, and then submit to your editor. You have worked really hard on this bit of writing and now is the time to publish. Good work!

Mars moves into the 9th house of travel on November 20th. You are in the mood to book a trip. Holiday vacay perhaps? New Years’ trip to Hawaii? Research the best prices and plan out a really exciting trip. What sites would you like to visit (besides the beach, obvi)? Are there performances you would like to attend? People you would like meet? Begin putting together your ideal itinerary.

The Sun moves into the 10th house of career goals on November 23rd. Your focus will shift onto your career when the Sun moves in to the 10th house. Are you on the right track? What can you do in the long term and the short term to achieve your career goals? Do you have a new, exciting idea that you would like to pursue? What action steps can you take right now?

A New Moon appears in the 10th house of career goals on November 26th. A new opportunity in your career will present itself during the time of this New Moon. Have you applied to a new job? Take that interview and go to that audition. This may be exactly the next step that you need to take to achieve your goals.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 8th house of banking and finance. Check your bank statements! When Mercury goes retrograde in your banking house, you may be more susceptible to identity fraud and theft. You might also receive a much larger than expected bill out of nowhere (such as a parking ticket or a hefty bill from your instrument repair technician). Try not to panic or knock any chairs over in a fit of Aries rage. There is likely a good explanation behind it all.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 9th house of travel on November 2nd. This is a great time to take a trip to somewhere beautiful for some rest and relaxation (leave your flute at home). Head out to a ski adventure in the mountains or a chill out on sandy beach in a warmer climate. You could really use the break!

A Full Moon appears in the 2nd house of income on November 12th. One of your gigs may be coming to an end around the time of this Full Moon. Perhaps you saw this coming as your contract was swiftly approaching its end date. It is okay to move on to bigger and better things.

Mars moves into the 8th house of banking and finance on November 20th. Time to clean up whatever messes Mercury retrograde made at the beginning on the month! This is also a good time to sit down with a financial advisor and formulate a savings plan for the future. What are your financial goals? Do you have credit cards you would like to pay off? Student loans that you would like free yourself from? Would you like to eventually buy a house? How much will you need for a down-payment? Would you like to purchase a new flute? How much could you trim from your current monthly expenses to help you get there?

The Sun moves into the 9th house of travel on November 23rd. This is a great time to plan a winter vacation. Book a trip to see a holiday performance of The Nutcracker by a world-renowned performing group. Purchase those tickets to the annual performance of Peter and the Wolf by your favorite orchestra. The Sun is encouraging you to get into the Holiday Spirit!

A New Moon appears in the 9th house of travel on November 26th. This is the perfect day to put an itinerary together for your trip. What exciting things can you do while you are away from home? What sites would you like to see? What activities would you like to incorporate into your stay? Plan your ideal Winter getaway.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 7th house of relationships. Be careful in your communications with friends, family, and colleagues at the beginning of the month, as your words can easily be misinterpreted during the Mercury retrograde. Conflicts may arise from even the simplest phrases. For example, “I think your pitch may be slightly low on that high Eb,” to your stand partner may be heard as, “You are the worst flute player of all time.” Proceed with caution and try to be as supportive and encouraging as possible.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 8th house of banking and finance on November 2nd. This is great news if you have recently applied for a loan, a grant, or are planning to make a major purchase. Venus will help you attract the financial resources you need to get off the ground running. The loan you applied for will be larger than you anticipated with a great interest rate! Your travel grant application to study in Paris will be approved! Try not to overspend as soon as the cash comes in. Venus and Jupiter enjoy the finer things in life and sometimes forget about the bottom line.

A Full Moon appears in the 1st house of identity on November 12th. Something that used to be very important to you will need to be changed or ended around the time of this Full Moon. You may have spent the past several weeks practicing like crazy for a concerto competition only to be eliminated in the first round. Try not to beat yourself up. Do what you can to move on from the situation. You may be disappointed, but tomorrow is another day.

Mars moves into the 7th house of relationships on November 20th. Mars may introduce you to a new friend or colleague during this time. You may be setting up a number of meetings with this person to discuss future collaborations. Find some time to play through some chamber music together. This is a great time to exchange ideas about music, teaching, and life in general.

The Sun moves into the 8th house of banking and finance on November 23rd. Your focus will shift onto your finances at the end of the month. There may be some paperwork you will need to finalize to secure the loan you were offered at the beginning of the month. Make sure to cross your T’s and dot your I’s. This process should be relatively smooth as long as you wait for the pesky Mercury retrograde to pass before signing on the dotted line.

A New Moon appears in the 8th house of banking and finance on November 26th. You may be finally ready to make your large purchase around the time of this Full Moon. The paperwork has been finalized. The loan granted. The travel grant awarded. The Universe is officially giving you the green light to spend this money on your dreams.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You may need to find clever ways to revamp your daily schedule during the Mercury retrograde. How are you balancing everything in your life? Are you working yourself into exhaustion? Are you scheduling enough time to eat, sleep, practice, and chillax or is self-care falling to the bottom of your list of priorities? How can you better divide your time between your work responsibilities and your responsibilities to your family and to yourself?

Venus joins Jupiter in the 7th house of relationships on November 2nd. Spend some quality time with the ones you love when Jupiter moves into your 7th house. Host a party and invite all of the cool kids from your orchestra! Take your family out to a concert. Host a masterclass/get together with your students and sight read some fun Holiday music. Visit a theme park with your flute friends. Try not to take yourself and others so seriously. Have fun!

A Full Moon appears in the 12th house of behind the scenes projects on November 12th. You may have been working on a piece of orchestra music that has proven to be quite emotionally and physically draining prior to the Full Moon. The good news is that your suffering is nearly over! The concert may be around this time and you may never need to look at this piece again. Do not feel guilty about not jiving with a certain piece of music. It may not be your style. Do what you can to power through but keep in mind that there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel.

Mars moves into the 6th house of daily work and health routines on November 20th. You may turn into a workaholic at the end of the month. Rehearsals, students, classes, practice, juries, recitals – You name it, it is probably on your to-do list. Mars will help give you the energy to get everything done. Try to take breaks to avoid burnout and exhaustion.

Talk about career goals and bounce ideas off of one another for possible future collaborations.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 5th house of creativity and joy. You may feel a bit stuck creatively at the beginning of the month (thanks a lot, Mercury retrograde). If you are working on a creative project (a CD, a composition, rehearsing a new piece of music), use this time to rethink your approach. What can you do better? Is there a different tone color that you would like to try? A different tempo? Would you like to write your own cadenza? Take your time and slowly work (and re-work) your ideas into something great!

Venus joins Jupiter in the 6th house of daily work and health routines on November 2nd. You may be adding a few unexpected rehearsals to your daily schedule (perhaps in relation to a sub opportunity with a local orchestra), but instead of being overwhelmed and overworked like you initially thought, you will find yourself enjoying your busy time. Your productivity is improving your overall mood and your activities are shining a new light on your unique skills. People are really impressed by your work at this time. Enjoy the daily spotlight!

A Full Moon appears in the 11th house of groups and communities on November 12th. You may need to bow out of a group performance commitment around the time of the Full Moon. Rehearsal schedules likely do not sync up with your new work opportunities or you may just be performing in one too many holiday concerts this season. It is okay to prioritize your groups at this time. You cannot say yes to everything.

Mars moves into the 5th house of creativity and joy on November 20th. Finally, you are back on track with your creative project! You have made some sort of breakthrough and are now inspired to complete your work. Mars will give you the energy to complete everything on your project to-do list. Be thoughtful when deciding what actions steps to take to most effectively harness your ambitious creative drive.

The Sun moves into the 6th house of daily work and health routines on November 23rd. Your focus moves onto your daily schedule at the end of the month. Work may be getting out of hand and you likely have said yes to one too many opportunities. Take a careful look at your daily priorities. Are you leaving enough time to eat, sleep, exercise, and practice self-care? Are you getting in enough quality practice time? What can you cut out of your schedule to create a better balance in your life?

A New Moon appears in the 6th house of daily work and health routines on November 26th. Reprioritizing your schedule will be very important when a new work opportunity presents itself at the end of the month. A local flute teacher may be going out of town for a few months and is hoping you can take over her studio teaching and smaller ensemble activities. Go for it! You may need to cut other things out of your life to add this to your schedule. Be thoughtful about where you can reorganize your time.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 4th house of home and family. You may find yourself in an unexpected argument with a family member during this pesky Mercury retrograde. Try to remain calm and listen without reacting. There may be underlying issues (fears, insecurities) behind their words. What is motivating their reactions?

Venus joins Jupiter in the 5th house of creativity and joy on November 2nd. This is a great time to work on a creative project that brings you joy. If it feels like work, don’t do it. Sit down and compose something. Spend some time improvising. Write your own cadenza for one of the Mozart concerti. Create something fun and beautiful.

A Full Moon appears in the 10th house of career goals on November 12th. There is something in your career that is in need of a bit of change. Are you on the right path? Are you trying to create a life as a performer but find yourself drawn less to the stage and more to the classroom environment? Are you auditioning all of the time but not making it to the final round? What can you do to change your circumstances? Spend some time creating a realistic plan moving forward.

Mars moves into the 4th house of home and family on November 20th. Mars will help you accomplish a lot at home when he moves into the 4th house. Have you thought about renovating your home studio? Upgrading your recording equipment? Creating a larger rehearsal space at home for your chamber music rehearsals? Grab your tape measure and get to work!

The Sun moves into the 5th house of creativity and joy on November 23rd. Your focus with shift onto that creative project you started working on at the beginning of the month. You might have one of those wonderful lightbulb moments around this time where something you had been struggling with finally makes perfect sense. It could be as simple as finding the perfect articulation to use in your cadenza or as large as booking a studio for your CD recording. Run with this idea – It’s a good one!

A New Moon appears in the 5th house of creativity and joy on November 26th. One creative idea may spark another around the time of this New Moon. If you are composing a new work, you may start thinking about performance venues to premier your piece when it is complete. Think bigger than the manuscript in front of you.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 3rd house of communication. It is always a difficult time when the planet of communication (Mercury) goes retrograde in the house of communication. Be careful with even the simplest of messages. Emails, texts, voicemails – all of these things can be easily misinterpreted by friends, family, colleagues, conductors, anyone! Emojis will not help during a Mercury retrograde. Proofread once or twice before sending and consider the importance of your message. Keep messages simple and clear.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 4th house of home and family on November 2nd. This is a great time to spend some time with your family doing something fun. Go see a movie! Attend a concert! Have a game night! Take a break from making music and simply enjoy the company of your loved ones.

Mars moves into the 3rd house of communication on November 20th. If you do not yet have a flute blog, this is a great time to set something up and start writing. What interests you about the flute? Is there a particular genre or composer that you love? Do you have any unique teaching techniques or practice suggestions? Mars will help you share your ideas with the World.

The Sun moves into the 4th house of home and family on November 23rd. Your attention will shift to your family at the end of the month. Spend some time practicing at home. Ask your family to participate as judges in mock auditions. Host a masterclass at home and invite your family. They will enjoy meeting your students and will be inspired by your teachings.

A New Moon appears in the 4th house of home and family on November 26th. You may be moving into a new house, apartment, or studio at the end of month. Spend some time beautifying your environment, making the space work well for your needs.

The month begins on November 1st with a Mercury Retrograde in your 2nd house of income. Things may go a bit haywire at work during this Mercury Retrograde. Projects you thought were finished may come back to haunt you. If you had a disastrous orchestra performance, your conductor may choose to have a discussion about what went wrong and how to avoid the same mistakes in the future. Not a fun conversation, but helpful for future performances.

Venus joins Jupiter in the 3rd house of communication on November 2nd. This is a great day to have difficult conversations if you need to have them. Venus will help smooth things over in a way that others will appreciate. Look for win-win situations. Show your support to colleagues that may be struggling to understand their music or the music making lifestyle in general.

A Full Moon appears in the 8th house of banking and finance on November 12th. You may be making the final payment on a loan around the time of this Full Moon. Congrats! The flute you purchased at the convention this year will finally, and officially, be yours! Enjoy your financial accomplishment.

Mars moves into the 2nd house of income on November 20th. This is a great time to apply to a new job. Are you looking for a new challenge? More performing opportunities? More students? A stable teaching life? Update your resume and start sprucing up your excerpts. You are in need of a positive change at work.

The Sun moves into the 3rd house of communication on November 23rd. Do you have a great idea for an article or a book about the flute or flute playing? Use this time to start drafting up some of your ideas. Reach out to publishers and start putting together book proposal ideas.

A New Moon appears in the 3rd house of communication on November 26th. This New Moon may bring in an opportunity to publish your writings either online or in a larger publication. You may even be inspired to self-publish your ideas on your flute blog. Don’t be afraid to put yourself (and your writing) out into the World.
