To Catch A Flute Thief
A Warning from the Chairman of the Polish Flute Society, Elzbieta Wolenska
An unimaginable story that every flutist should read.
Festivals, competitions or orchestra auditions are an opportunity to meet many flutists from all over the world. However, we do not think that in such a situation someone might be willing to rob us.
Recently during auditions to the renowned National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice, Poland, we had place a shocking incident that was reported in the trusted Polish Newspaper reports:

First day of auditions, 19th of October 2021
Jan Chłap: "There were only 25 flutists invited for the live audition and we were five in the same dressing room. I drew number one so I played first. When I finished, I went back to the room and packed my flute into my backpack. After a while I realized that I forgot my scores so I left. At the same time the others had to leave as well, one to play audition and others to the bathroom. Only 1 person stayed at the room, Mr. G.V. a Spanish flute player (who studied at the CNSMDP - Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, MUK - Musik un Kunst Privatuniversitätder Stadt Wien, and a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra). Before this day, we did not we didn’t know and we had never spoken to each other.
I was out for 9 minutes and the others only 5 minutes. When I got back to the dressing room, I thought maybe I should practice - just in case I got into the 2nd round. I took the flute from my backpack and realized the headjoint had disappeared. I immediately asked everyone in the dressing room, what happened to the headjoint, but unfortunately no one was able to answer me.
I ran to the NOSPR staff and the security office to ask for a help. Since most places are monitored we started looking at the footage from the security video to find out what happened. We noticed very quickly that the only person who remained in the room at that time was Mr. G.V. He left the room for a moment, looked around, came back, and left the room again, and then returned.
At this point I had no doubts – I called the police. However, at first he pleaded not guilty. The breakthrough moment turned out to be finding surveillance footage of him hiding headjoint in his shoes. After this was discovered, he confessed and indicated the location of the stolen headjoint: in the paper towel bin in the bathroom!"
"I think what we can add, perhaps the most dreadful thing is how can you can do something like this with such easiness. He was focused the whole time, preparing for the performance, he practiced a little, he even adjusted something with a screwdriver on his golden flute. He looked like one of those target-only "cutters", while the rest of us who hadn't seen each other for a long time, made up it by catching up with social news. Even after the headjoint disappeared, he was totally convincing that he had nothing to do with it. He completely denied it, looking straight into Jan's eyes."
"I was playing towards the end. I found myself thinking I had never played auditions thinking so much about something else other than my playing. We had all been through it a lot. What a terrible situation."
"I think it is worth adding that the perpetrator, even in the face of the officers, and with the vision of further consequences, kept a cool head with great self-control and, in the beginning, did not admit anything."
"I was in another room, so I didn't have much contact with Mr. G., but he was playing a while after me. I saw him walking down the corridor as if nothing had happened. He even walked over to the room where we were staying and I managed to make eye contact with him. I thought to myself that it was probably impossible that it was him. He was so calm, he walked around the corridor with a smile. I don't think it was his first time to do such a thing. For me, just playing an audition is stressful, and he had stolen someone's headjoint, and was walking around like nothing happened. If you ask me, this is not how an amateur thief behaves :( I was in a huge shock. I hope he will suffer the consequences. I hope no one will be robbed again."
"The situation shocked everyone very much. After all, we were among the people who had known and trusted each other for many years. While everyone was nervously searching for the headjoint in various places, Mr. G. was walking calmly down the corridor, asking about the music order, etc. Even when he became the main suspect from the security video footage, no one wanted to believe in his guilt precisely because of this calmness in his behavior. But if someone is able to rummage in other people's things and steal something (!), then probably they are able to keep their nerves until the very end."
This unbelievable story that happened should be a warning to all musicians.
A nice, well-playing and successful flutist/musician does not always turn out to be an honest person.
It is impossible to remain silent about such a matter and we should protect the innocent as well as punish the perpetrator. According to the police report, he could suffer a 3 month jail sentence and up to 5 years jail time. We express our deep condemnation and hope that this situation will never take place under any circumstances.

Una historia inimaginable que todo flautista debería leer.
Los festivales, concursos o audiciones de orquesta son una oportunidad para conocer a muchos flautistas de todo el mundo. Sin embargo, no creemos que en tal situación alguien esté dispuesto a robarnos.
Recientemente, durante las audiciones para la reconocida Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio Nacional Polaca (NOSPR) en Katowice, Polonia, tuvimos lugar un incidente impactante que se informó en los informes de los periódicos polacos de confianza:

Primer día de audiciones, 19 de octubre de 2021
Jan Chłap: "Solo había 25 flautistas invitados a la audición en vivo y éramos cinco en el mismo camerino. Saqué el número uno, así que toqué primero. Cuando terminé, volví a la sala y guardé la flauta en mi mochila. Después de un rato me di cuenta de que me había olvidado las partituras y fui a recuperarlas. Al mismo tiempo los demás tenían que irse también, uno para hacer la audición y otros para ir al baño. Solo quedó 1 persona en la habitación, el Sr. GV, un flautista español (que estudió en el CNSMDP - Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, MUK - Musik un Kunst Privatuniversitätder Stadt Wien, y miembro de la Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester). Antes de este día, no nos conocíamos y nunca nos habíamos hablado.
Estuve fuera durante 9 minutos y los demás solo 5 minutos. Cuando regresé al vestuario, pensé que tal vez debería estudiar, por si acaso pasaba a la segunda ronda. Saqué la flauta de mi mochila y me di cuenta de que la cabeza había desaparecido. Inmediatamente pregunté a todos en el vestuario, qué había pasado con la cabeza, pero desafortunadamente nadie pudo responderme.
Corrí hacia el personal de NOSPR y Seguridad para pedir ayuda. Dado que la mayoría de los lugares están monitoreados, comenzamos a mirar las imágenes del video de seguridad para averiguar qué sucedió. Nos dimos cuenta muy rápidamente de que la única persona que permanecía en la habitación en ese momento era el Sr. G.V. Salió de la habitación por un momento, miró a su alrededor, regresó y salió de la habitación nuevamente, y luego regresó.
En este punto no tenía dudas, llamé a la policía. Sin embargo, al principio se declaró inocente. El momento decisivo llegó cuando se encontraron imágenes de vigilancia de él escondiendo la cabeza en sus zapatos. Después de esto, confesó e indicó la ubicación de la cabeza robada: ¡en el cesto de toallas de papel en el baño! "
"Creo que podemos agregar, quizás lo más terrible, es cómo se puede hacer algo así con tanta facilidad. Estuvo concentrado todo el tiempo, preparándose para la audición, tocó un poco, incluso ajustó algo en su flauta de oro con un destornillador. Parecía uno de esos "corta-cabezas" con un objetivo específico, mientras que el resto de nosotros, que no nos habíamos visto durante mucho tiempo, lo recuperábamos poniéndonos al día. Incluso después de que la cabeza desapareciera, él resultó totalmente convincente de que no tenía nada que ver con eso. Lo negó completamente, mirando directamente a los ojos de Jan".
"Yo tocaba hacia el final. Me encontré pensando que nunca había tocado en audiciones pensando tanto en otra cosa que no fuera mi audición. Todos estábamos afectados. Qué situación tan terrible".
"Creo que vale la pena agregar que el perpetrador, incluso frente a los oficiales, y con vistas de futuras consecuencias, mantuvo la cabeza fría con un gran autocontrol y, al principio, no admitió nada".
"Yo estaba en otra habitación, así que no tuve mucho contacto con el Sr. G., pero él estaba tocaba poco después de mí. Lo vi caminar por el pasillo como si nada hubiera pasado. Incluso entró en la habitación donde estaba mi grupo y logré hacer contacto visual con él. Pensé para mí mismo que probablemente era imposible que fuera él. Estaba tan tranquilo, caminaba por el pasillo con una sonrisa. No creo que fuera su primera vez que hacía algo así. Para mí, tocar en una audición es estresante, y él había robado la cabeza a alguien y estaba caminando como si nada. Si me preguntas, así no es como se comporta un ladrón aficionado :( Yo estaba en una gran conmoción. Espero que sufra las consecuencias. Espero que nadie vuelva a ser robado ".
"La situación sorprendió mucho a todos. Después de todo, estábamos entre las personas que se conocían y confiaban el uno en el otro durante muchos años. Mientras todos buscaban nerviosamente la cabeza en varios lugares, el Sr. G. caminaba tranquilamente por el pasillo, preguntando sobre el orden de la música, etc. Incluso cuando se convirtió en el principal sospechoso de las imágenes de video de seguridad, nadie quería creer en su culpa precisamente por esta calma en su comportamiento. Pero si alguien es capaz de hurgar en las cosas de otras personas y robar algo (!), entonces probablemente sean capaces de mantener los nervios hasta el final ".
Esta increíble historia que sucedió debería ser una advertencia para todos los músicos.
Un flautista / músico agradable, que toca bien y tiene éxito no siempre resulta ser una persona honesta.
Es imposible guardar silencio sobre un asunto así y debemos proteger a los inocentes y castigar al perpetrador. Según el informe policial, podría sufrir una condena de 3 meses de cárcel y hasta 5 años de cárcel. Expresamos nuestra profunda condena y esperamos que esta situación nunca se produzca bajo ninguna circunstancia.
