Can you tell us about your background as a flutist and what initially drew you to the flute?

I was born into an artistic family in Taipei. My mother is an artist who also plays the piano, and my father is a writer who plays the guitar and erhu. Growing up in this environment, I can truly say that "Music and Arts are my life." When I was seven years old, I began playing the viola and joined the orchestra in elementary school. Two years later, my uncle purchased a flute, but he eventually gave it up, leaving no one else in the family to play the instrument. I was captivated by the flute's beautiful and powerful sound. After discussing it with my parents and considering it myself, I chose the flute and resolved to become a flutist.

What inspired you to curate and arrange the "Taiwanese Suite" for your upcoming recital?

Having played numerous master flute pieces and music, I've gained valuable knowledge and interpretations from them. As a Taiwanese musician, I consider it essential to appreciate my country's music. I believe that traditional music from every nation represents its beauty and diversity. It's also the simplest and most effective way to share a culture with others. Music is a universal language that everyone can enjoy deeply and directly.

How did you select the specific pieces by Yu-hsien Teng and Teresa Teng for this suite, and what do they represent in the context of Taiwanese culture?

When I began to consider which pieces to include in the concert to showcase the beauty and history of Taiwan, “Rainy Night Flowers” immediately came to mind. This piece is associated with EVA Air, the Taiwanese airline. Upon landing, EVA Air plays this music to signal that passengers have safely arrived and are welcome home. I believe this piece will resonate deeply with Taiwanese audiences and evoke a profound sense of nostalgia.

Yu-hsien Teng(1906-1944) was regarded as the Father of Taiwanese folk songs. "The classic masterpiece “Four, Moon, Hope, Rain” refers to four Taiwanese-language songs in his collection: “Four Seasons Red (四季紅), Moonlit Melancholy (月夜愁), Longing for the Spring Breeze (望春風), and Rainy Night Flowers (雨夜花)”. These songs evoke deep emotions and resonate in the memories of the Taiwanese people. Teng was a pioneering musician who played a crucial role in shaping Taiwan's early popular music scene.

Teresa Teng(1953-1995) was a Taiwanese singer who achieved superstar status throughout East Asia, with particular admiration in Taiwan and China. Her pure, melodious voice and evocative love songs captivated audiences in the 1970s and '80s.

What do you hope the audience will take away from experiencing the "Taiwanese Suite" during your recital at Half Hollow Hills Community Library?

I hope the audience can experience the beauty of Taiwan through the "Taiwanese Suite," appreciating not only the melodies but also the powerful and profound emotions they convey.

As a flutist deeply connected to Taiwanese musical traditions, how do you see your role in promoting and preserving this cultural heritage through your performances?

When I have the opportunity to perform on the flute and share my music with the world, I put a lot of effort into offering something unique. I strive to go beyond classical music by exploring various types of music from around the globe, with a special focus on Taiwanese music. After graduating from university, I have the freedom to choose my concert repertoire. While I retain classic flute pieces in my repertoire, I also select works that represent the beauty of Taiwan. Music is the best way to showcase this richness to the world.
