In his latest album, flutist Julien Beaudiment explores the versatility and expressive range of Mozart’s music for flute, drawing listeners into a repertoire shaped by love, loss, and fidelity. Each piece reflects the profound influence of women on Mozart’s life and career—an inspiration that imbues the music with vocal expressiveness and emotional resonance.

“What is amazing with the music for flute by Mozart is that he understood the incredible versatility of the sound of this instrument,” Beaudiment shares. “With him, the flute is light and luminous but also capable of darkness and depth. The flute goes low and high, giving it a vocal quality, a truly expressive range for a woodwind instrument.” For Beaudiment, Mozart’s pieces for flute are full of beauty and narrative depth, revealing both the instrument’s power and the composer’s emotional landscape.

Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto is central to this collection. Composed during his time in Paris, it coincided with the tragic death of his mother. Yet the music remains filled with lyricism and tenderness, the harp and flute weaving together in heartfelt, expressive dialogue. “The Flute and Harp Concerto is my favorite concerto of all time,” Beaudiment reflects, explaining his decision to revisit this beloved piece. “I wanted to include new elements, something fresh so the listener won’t say, ‘again, a new Mozart flute album with the same things…’”

The album includes the first-ever recording of the Rondo in its original key of C, seamlessly paired with the Andante through a new cadenza. There’s also a set of theme and variations on Hélas, j’ai perdu mon amant (“Alas, I lost my lover…”), which adds a playful yet melancholic twist to the repertoire. And in a unique choice, Beaudiment has transformed two concert arias—Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio! and Voi avete un cor fedele—into pieces for flute, showcasing the instrument’s ability to convey vocal qualities. These arias, as well as the themes in Cosi fan tutte, reveal Mozart’s fascination with fidelity and love, emotions that were deeply relevant during his time in Mannheim, where he fell in love with Aloysia Weber.

Beaudiment is joined by harpist Anaïs Gaudemard, whose award-winning artistry is complemented by the distinct sound of her Lyon & Healy Style 23 Gold Concert Grand harp. Known for her expressive sound, Gaudemard performs on renowned stages like the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Barbican Centre, adding richness to the album’s collaborative works. Also featured is Philippe Bernold, the celebrated conductor and flautist who leads the orchestral ensemble for this recording. His expertise, particularly in Mozart’s works, stems from years of experience with leading orchestras and conductors, including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, instilling in him a nuanced approach to Mozart’s music.

Recording at the Lyon National Opera House, Beaudiment, Gaudemard, and Bernold create a vivid listening experience that brings Mozart’s timeless compositions to life with new depth and clarity. Beaudiment’s goal was to create an album that both honors Mozart’s legacy and introduces listeners to rarely heard pieces that convey the complexity of Mozart’s emotions and inspirations.

With this release, Julien Beaudiment offers a fresh interpretation of Mozart’s flute works, inviting audiences into an intimate world where the flute becomes an instrument of both vocal warmth and instrumental brilliance. The album is a reminder of Mozart’s extraordinary understanding of the flute, allowing listeners to hear this familiar repertoire anew—as both a personal reflection of the composer’s experiences and a tribute to the people who shaped his life.
