NEW COLUMN: Dr. G’s Flute Horoscopes. by Rachel Taylor Geier

The big news for everybody this month is that Jupiter, planet of expansion, growth, abundance, and learning, is entering the sign of Scorpio on October 10th. This will mean different things for each sign depending on which astrological house Jupiter lands in. With the Sun also moving into Scorpio on October 22nd, there will be an added spotlight on your Jupiter placement. Something in your flute playing is about to blow up (in a good way!). The Jupiter transit will last a little over a year. You may not see abundance right away, however October marks the beginning of major growth and change in your flute life. The seeds are literally being sown in October for something new and amazing to happen in the future months. Get ready!

Libra (September 23-October 22). Happy Birthday Libra!!! For the first 3 weeks of the month, the Sun will be in your sign in the 1st house of visibility and who you are in the world. You are most likely playing up a storm, hopping from performance to performance, juggling impressive solos in your band or orchestra ensembles with stunning solo and chamber recital performances that put you smack dab in the middle of the spotlight. You are the queen bee for the first 3 weeks of October! Your Jupiter is landing in the 2nd house of income on October 10th (and we are all jealous). This is a great time for you to expand your income by taking on new money-making endeavors. Jupiter may be encouraging you to learn new skills that will increase your cashflow over the next year (maybe you are learning a new instrument to increase your student base). As Venus and Mars are aligned in your 12th house of shadows and secrets for the first two weeks of the month, you may be feeling quite passionate about a project that you are working on behind the scenes. When Venus and Mars move into your 1st house on October 22nd, at the same time that the sun is shining a light on the Jupiter hanging out in your 2nd house of income, you are ready to share the money-making project you have been working on in secret with the world. Have you been working on a new CD recording that is set to launch on or around the end of October? Or maybe you are writing a book that is set to release at the end of the month. Whatever it is, you are very excited and ready to share your flute playing ideas with the world.

Full Moon - October 5th in Aries in your 7th house of relationships. A creative relationship might be ending behind the scenes. Perhaps your accompanist is moving or you no longer have time to perform with a particular group.

New Moon - October 19th in Libra in your 1st house, opposing Uranus. You want to break out of a rut and promote something new! You are reinventing your own definition of what it means to be a “flute player.”

Scorpio (October 23-November 21).   Are you spending countless hours in the practice room these days? You may also be typing away at your computer working on an article or a book until the wee hours of the morning. This is because the Sun is currently in your 12th house of shadows, secrets, and working behind the scenes. There is something that you are working on, that you may have been plugging away at over the past year, that is nearly ready to present to the world. When Jupiter enters your sign on the 10th, it is setting up shop in your 1st house of visibility and who are in the world. You are feeling quite confident about this project and may be talking about it with friends and colleagues at parties, as Venus and Mars in your 11th house are igniting your passion for socializing in group activities. You are likely preparing for a recital or a solo performance with a local orchestra or even publishing a book. Jupiter is giving you the little boost of confidence you need to begin to share your ideas with the world. Although you (and your flute playing) will definitely be in the spotlight beginning on October 22nd when the Sun enters your sign (lights, camera, action time!), you are still not quite ready to launch your amazing project or performance yet because Venus and Mars are moving into Libra in your 12th house on the very same day. There are still a number of finishing touches to be made in the practice room or behind the scenes before you feel that your work is ready to present to the world. To ease your stress, you might want to wait until after November 7th to launch your project when Venus and Mars move into the 1st house of YOU.

Full Moon - October 5th in Aries in your 6th house of day-to-day job routines, supported by Venus and Mars in your 11th house of socializing. You are hanging out with colleagues more, perhaps discussing practice routines that aren’t really working for you anymore. Your friends and fellow flute players will help you ditch old practice habits that no longer serve you. Listen to their advice.

New Moon - October 19th in Libra in your 12th house, opposite Uranus. You are still working on that super-secret, awesome project behind the scenes but are inspired on this date to try something new to make it even better. You are done with traditional ideas about what your flute playing “should” sound like and crave something original.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21).   You begin the month knee-deep in group rehearsals (band, orchestra, chamber groups), discussing many of your flute playing goals and dreams with your colleagues. You might be trying to expand your studio or improve your flute playing enough to land a principal role in your organization within the next year and really want some advice on how to get there. This is because the Sun in Libra is in your 11th house of goals and socializing, supported by Mars and Venus in your 10th house of business and leadership. You definitely want to talk it out with experts in your field and come up with a game plan. Jupiter is moving into Scorpio in your 12th house on October 10th indicating that you will be embarking on an educational journey over the next year. You might even go back to school! Have you been considering a 2nd degree in Musicology? Have you always wanted to teach High School Band? Jupiter is asking you to work on something behind the scenes that is meaningful to you. You might even pull up that application for a new course of study when the Sun moves into Scorpio on October 22nd. Jupiter says go for it! When Venus and Mars move into your 11th house of social events, friends, and creativity on October 22nd, you may find yourself jamming a couple nights a week in your friend’s basement. You really just want to hang out, make good music, and contemplate your future at the end of this month. Jupiter in the 12th is urging you to chill out and think about what is best for you.

Full Moon - October 5th in Aries in your 5th house of creativity and entertainment, supported by Venus and Mars in your 10th house of careers. Something in your flute playing just hasn’t been inspiring you lately and you feel that you need to let it go. Is it a group that just doesn’t challenge or inspire you? Is it a piece that you have tried to wrap your brain around in the practice room but just does not seem to click? Let it go. If you are not on fire about what you are playing then why are you still playing it?

New Moon - October 19th in Libra in your 11th house of friendships and collaborations, opposite Uranus. You want to join or start your own new group. Have you ever thought about hosting your own flute choir? Maybe you want to form a woodwind quintet. This new moon is telling you to go for it!

Capricorn (December 22-January 19). October begins with the Sun in Libra in your 10th house of career and business reputation. You may be working on some type of professional training to boost your career prospects. This could mean that you have been taking lessons from an expert flutist to sharpen your playing skills or perhaps learning a new genre of repertoire such as Jazz or beatboxing. You may even begin to see some financial results in this early part of October for all of your hard work (a new gig, perhaps?). Jupiter will be making its way into Scorpio in your 11th house on October 10th. You will be networking over the course of the year, expanding your connections with other flutists and other groups of musicians. Jupiter will also be asking you to reconsider your long-range goals. How do you want to improve your flute playing? What do you want to do with your music career? These are the types of conversations that you may find yourself discussing with new friends and flute playing colleagues. When the Sun moves into Scorpio on October 22nd, you will really want to sit down and devise a 5 and 10-year plan for your career. New Moon - October 19th in Libra in your 10th house of careers, opposite Uranus. You want to do something new. You are no longer “just a flute player.”

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18). With the Sun in Libra in your 9th house of traveling, marketing, and communications for the first 3 weeks of the month, you may be on tour or presenting at school clinics around your area. Perhaps you are in recruitment mode for your home studio and are hosting a number of sample recitals around your surrounding community. You are designing and distributing studio flyers, redesigning your business cards, and hosting as many masterclasses as you can fit into your schedule. On October 10th, Jupiter sets up camp in your 10th house of careers and business matters where it will stay for the next year. You have been working very hard on refining your flute playing and want to see your career blossom. Jupiter will give you the tools to make that happen. You may need to invest in some additional professional training to achieve the recognition that you are craving. The Sun in Libra is transiting your 8th house of financial obligations, shared resources, and loans, so you might have to shuffle through mountains of paper work to secure that bank loan for your new instrument. Don’t worry! It will be a great investment as Jupiter will be moving into Scorpio in your 9th house of higher learning on October 10th. You may want to go back to school to learn new ideas that hold great personal significance to you and having a new instrument will help you develop along the way. You are ready to transform. Your attention will be drawn to this area when the Sun enters Scorpio on October 22nd and you may even find yourself applying to a new degree program at that time. On October 10th, Jupiter moves into Scorpio in your 8th house of joint ventures, banking, loans, and insurance, where it will stay for the next year. You may be trying to add a bit of spice to your daily schedule by switching up old, worn out routines, or playing music that really speaks to your soul. A predictable schedule does not necessarily need to be made up of boring tasks. Rehearse with an interesting group. Give your students interesting repertoire to work on in their weekly lessons. Jupiter will be moving into your 7th house of relationships and partnerships beginning on October 10th. This indicates that you may be forming a new group. Have you always wanting to host a flute choir? Would you like to rehearse with a woodwind quintet? Would you like to work with a harpist and perform at weddings? This yearlong transit of Jupiter in your 7th will give you the tools to establish a successful new ensemble. You might even be inclined to begin contacting your fellow musicians on October 22nd when the Sun enters Scorpio, shining a spotlight on this area of your chart. Make those calls! Send those emails! This could be a very busy time in your home studio and you might even be hosting a studio masterclass at your home, giving your students a chance to express their own creativity or learn new, creative approaches to repertoire from their teacher. The influence of the 4th house indicates that you are not really interested in stages and performance halls at this time. You would like to keep performances casual and hosted from the confines of your own home. Jupiter will be moving into your 6th house of day-to-day work life and service on October 10th. During this year-long transit, you will be searching for a better job, improved work conditions, and more work. If you host a home studio, you may be trying to expand your practice by teaching at a college or university once or twice a week, or you may also want to switch things up and devote your time to performing in a new ensemble that rehearses in the evenings. When the Sun moves into Scorpio on October 22nd, you will be inspired to hit the ground running. Send out your CV to local colleges and orchestras. New Moon - October 19th in Libra in your 4th house of home, family, and property, opposing Uranus. You want to change up your home studio environment. Go ahead and rearrange the furniture. Add a calming fountain. Set up some new bookshelves. Add a mini-trampoline (for postural exercises).

Leo (July 23-August 22). For the first 3 weeks of the month, the Sun will be in Libra in your 3rd house of communication, traveling, and writing, supported for the first 2 weeks by Venus and Mars in your 2nd house of income. You have already completed a money-making project (like a CD or a book) and are advertising your work far and wide, quite possibly marketing your ideas at national conferences. You have put in the blood, sweat, and tears and are ready to start raking in the chips. Use social media to spread the word about your project quickly and promote, promote, promote on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. You have created a wonderful product and are excited to see how well it sells. Jupiter will enter Scorpio on October 10th in your 4th house of home, family, and real estate. You will be trying to work more from home over the next year, relying on the passive income that your CD or book project may generate. Focus will be shifted onto growing your home studio so that your time is primarily filled with teaching responsibilities. The Sun will shine a spotlight on this area on October 22nd when it moves into Scorpio. When Venus and Mars moving into your 3rd house of communication and travel on the very same day, you might be booking a number of trial lessons during the last week of the month or taking your students on a field trip. Virgo (August 23-September 22). October begins with the Sun in Libra in your 2nd house of income, supported by Venus and Mars in the 1st house of visibility and how you present yourself in the world for the first 2 weeks of the month. You are making money and quite popular at this time. You might have recently hosted a magnificent recital that boosted your popularity as a teacher, increasing the number of students wanting to sign up for flute lessons. Go you! You are on fire at the beginning of the month. Your ego will not be too inflated for long as Jupiter will make its way into your 10th house of learning, communication, and sales on October 10th. Your attention over the next year will shift to research and communication. You want to study something about the flute or flute history and write or speak about your research at conferences. Something has sparked your interest. Perhaps you have chosen to research a composer or piece of music and are inspired to learn more. This makes perfect sense as Venus and Mars are pushing you to learn more about music that is important to you. When the Sun moves into Scorpio on October 22nd, you will want to take the first steps in your research. Hit up the library or spend some time with your old friend Google. Be careful not to overspend on research supplies (or trips overseas) as Venus and Mars will be moving to your 2nd house of income on the same day. Instead, use this energy to set up a business meeting with another influential musician to brainstorm new ways to increase your income.

Full Moon – October 5th in Aries in your 8th house of financial matters, supported by Venus and Mars in your 1st house of visibility. This is a great day to host a recital where you can also sell your CDs, books, or recruit for your home studio.

New Moon – October 19th in Libra in your 2nd house of income, opposing Uranus. You are looking for a new way to make some money. Perhaps you are turning to composing. Or maybe teaching at another location or school. You might even be inspired to simply open your flute case and play a few solo Telemann Fantasies at the mall. Go for it!

Happy October!
