CD Review: Encore; Flutist Aleksandr Haskin, Composer Eugene Magalif
Review by Barbara Siesel
Flute composer extraordinaire Eugene Magalif has a new CD of …encores!! Performed brilliantly by flutist Aleksandr Haskin. The 2 CD set includes mostly short pieces for flute or multiple flutes, pieces that are perfect for that special ending of a recital. Magalif provides very descriptive names for the works which are colorful, cheerful, and incredibly well crafted. His music is a cross between classical and more popular styles, very accessible for today's audiences.
Haskin and Beck bring the music to life perfectly, both technically and stylistically. Haskins is currently the principal flute of the Qatar Philharmonic and a winner of the Young Concert Artists competition. His flute playing is both strong and poignant, he has a beautiful and intense sound, virtuosic technique, and playful exacting rhythm that really is in tune with these pieces. Steven Beck, a member of The Knights, Da Capo Chamber Players, and the Talea Ensemble among others, is equally engaging, playing with energy and humor in true collaboration with Haskin, they are a great team!! Most of the pieces on the album are available for sale, many with ALRY Publications, Forton, Hal Leonard, and Keiser Southern Music.
