DR. G’s FLUTE HOROSCOPES May 2021

by Rachel Taylor Geier

Happy May! This month is all about luck and reflection. Not only will Jupiter be changing signs, but there is also a lunar eclipse, and a mercury retrograde. The stability of last month is giving way to a more Vegas-style, roll the dice and see where they land, atmosphere. Jupiter is the planet of luck and abundance. Wherever he resides will be the sector of your life where things suddenly start growing faster than the Springtime grass in your backyard. You may also have a few lucky breaks thanks to this benevolent planet. The Full Moon Eclipse will ask you to take a critical look at some of the things that may not be perfect in your life. Are you in need of a change? Go for it! Carpe diem. Finally, don’t let the pesky Mercury Retrograde at the end of the month throw you for a loop. Back up all of your technology and prepare for any miscommunications or delayed travel plans. Try to remain as patient as possible.

Taurus (April 20-May 20) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income. This is a great time to ask your boss for a raise (or your conductor for an opportunity to play principal at the next concert). You are feeling on top of your game and ready for a challenge. Make the case for yourself!

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 2nd house of income. You may have to prove that you deserve that principal part, but with Venus joining your 2nd house of income, you will likely dazzle any conductor or audition committee set before you. Use the more melodic excerpts to show them why you sparkle brighter than your competition.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. The New Moon is encouraging you to makeover your life! This could be a physical makeover (haircut, anyone?), a makeover for your flute (buy that new headjoint!), or a spiritual makeover (Why do you love playing the flute? How can you bring more of what you love about flute playing into your life?). Look for meaningful opportunities from the Universe.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. Your phone may be blowing up with requests to sub for groups around your community when Jupiter moves signs. This could eventually lead to invitations to join these groups permanently down the road. Put your best foot forward and say yes to any opportunities.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 2nd house of income. Your job will be on your mind when the Sun changes signs. Have there been any new audition notices posted recently (either locally or not-so-locally)? Does a school or community college need a new flute instructor? Even if it seems way above your pay grade, apply anyways.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. This is a great time to rethink all of your finances. Do you have loans that you are trying to pay off? Credit card balances you would like to eliminate? What does your savings account look like? What are your monthly bills and are there any subscriptions or services you can cut out of your life? This Full Moon is asking you to pay off whatever you can pay off, save whatever you can save, and start thinking about the future.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 2nd house of income. Check your paycheck when Mercury goes retrograde in your 2nd house. Mercury tends to create chaos whenever technology is involved. If you receive automatic payments from your job, your students, or any other income streams, double check that the correct amount is being deposited at the correct time to catch any errors.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 1st house of identity. Do a bit of soul-searching at the beginning of the month. What is most important to you in your life? What is most important to you about your flute playing? Write about these thoughts on your flute blog. If you need more support from others to arrange time for self-care or focused practice time, talk it out. You may be able to find a few win-win compromises.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 1st house of identity. You will be quite popular when Venus moves into your 1st house. This is a great time to host a recital (virtual or otherwise) or to post a few videos of your playing on YouTube. Your view count will be off the charts and others will gladly sing your praise!

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. You may find a really great new piece of repertoire around the time of this New Moon. Break it down in the practice room. Practice it slowly. Practice it in chunks. Transpose it. Play along to different recordings. Color your score to fit the mood of the music. Experiment with new and old practice techniques until you have mastered the score.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 10th house of career goals. Jupiter is about to bring some good luck to your career. Reexamine your career goals. Are there any job opportunities out there that fit perfectly with these ambitions? Is there a conductor or colleague that might have leads on new job openings? Whatever new opportunity arises around this time, jump on it! Jupiter wants you to have the career of your dreams.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 1st house of identity. Your attention will be on reinventing yourself, and your flute playing, from the ground up when the Sun changes signs. What do you love about your flute playing? What areas could use a bit more attention? Is it your intonation? Is it your articulation? Find practical ways to work on what needs to be worked on and, at the same time, appreciate your unique gifts.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 7th house of relationships. There is a volatile relationship in your environment that will need to change or possibly even end during this Lunar Eclipse. Not seeing eye-to-eye with your conductor? Rather than allowing tempers to flare during rehearsal, schedule a separate time to meet with the maestro and discuss your concerns. There may be a bit of musical and/or non-musical communication that needs to be worked out.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 1st house of identity. You may be having a hard time expressing yourself during this Mercury retrograde. You are trying very hard to have meaningful conversations with others, both in person and via email, but your words are not coming through clearly. Try avoid having serious conversations, if possible, until after the retrograde, or, if necessary, keep messages short and clear.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. This is a really great time to revamp your practice routine. Research new practice techniques. Reach out to some of your other flute friends to discuss effective practice approaches. Blog about it! Create YouTube videos about your favorite tips and tricks.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Practice what you love when Venus moves into your 12th house. What pieces inspire you? What excerpts do you find exciting – no matter how many times you play them? Is there a melody so beautiful it makes you cry or a run so difficult it makes you jump for joy when you land it? Play it out! Leave the scales and technical etudes for another time.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may be asked to join a new ensemble or professional group around the time of this New Moon. Are they looking for a long-term sub or adding a couple of rotational chairs for an upcoming performance? Jump on this opportunity and put your best foot forward. A good impression with this group may lead to a call-back in the future!

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. You may find yourself in a position to plan a few getaways when Jupiter changes signs. This is music to your ears as you may have been feeling a bit stir-crazy lately. Dream big! Where would you most like to travel? Is there a beach with your name on it?

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. You will be spending a lot of time in the practice room when the Sun moves signs. Use all of those practice techniques that you researched earlier in the month. What really works? What really doesn’t? Make your practice routine work for you!

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. One of your work responsibilities or exercise routines will need to be revised or possibly end around the time of this eclipse. This is something that has undoubtedly taken a tremendous amount of your time without much reward. If it is a work responsibility, can it be delegated to someone else? If it is a health routine, is there an alternative workout that might be better suited for you? Explore your options.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Something will start to unravel in the practice room during this Mercury retrograde. Now that you are looking much closer at the smaller details, your perfectionist side may come out in full force. Try to exercise as much patience as you can muster for the next few weeks. Practice slowly with a metronome. Break up technical runs into smaller chunks. Take much needed practice breaks.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. This is a great time to schedule any group sectionals in your ensembles. Mercury will help you work out any intonation issues or tricky cues in the music. Be patient with your colleagues. They may not understand yet the complexity of the score or the sensitivities of the other instruments. Work things out slowly and carefully.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 11th house of groups and communities. You will have a great time in rehearsal when Venus moves signs. How can you make rehearsals less of a workout and more of a hangout? Leos are very good at bringing sunshine and optimism to any environment. Use your gifts to make others truly enjoy music making.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. Have you recently applied to a new job? Perhaps one that you initially felt was way out of your league? A position on a super fancy orchestra across the country? A teaching position at a school you have always dreamed of teaching? This New Moon will bring you an audition or interview invitation. Congrats! Put your best foot forward. This is a wonderful opportunity from the Universe.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. You will likely receive a wonderful financial gift when Jupiter moves signs. Perhaps a wealthy relative or benefactor will come forward and offer to pay the balance on your new flute. Or you may receive an inheritance or some other large gift to help with various expenses. Make sure to send a thank you note!

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. You will be knee deep in rehearsals when the Sun moves signs. Be sure not to overbook yourself – hello burnout! Avoid multitasking during these rehearsals (studies show that multitasking is not that efficient anyways). Take breaks and prioritize practice time outside of rehearsal in the most efficient way possible.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. A creative project you had been working on may need to be revised or even abandoned around the time of this eclipse. Chance are, this is a project that is very meaningful for you but has not been working out the way you had originally envisioned. It is okay to ask for a second set of eyes. Can you simplify or build a new project in its place?

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may have a few miscommunications with orchestral colleagues during this Mercury retrograde. Try to avoid hosting sectionals during this time. Intonation will be difficult and your ear may play tricks on you. Attempts to correct tempos or cues (or even match vibrato speeds) will not work out as easily as they usually do. Be patient with your colleagues during this time.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals. This is a great time to revise your CV, cover letter, list of references, teaching and/or research statements, and any other information currently listed on various social media platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube). When was the last time you updated your materials? Check the job boards. Are there any new opportunities in line with your goals? Apply!

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 10th house of career goals. Venus will ask you to take a critical look at your career goals. What is it that you love the most about playing the flute? Which one of your goals brings you the most joy? Are there any goals set a long time ago that no longer interest you? Get rid of them! A goal set to please somebody else does not have a place in your life anymore.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. You will have an opportunity to plan a trip around the time of this Full Moon. Have you been invited to an audition or a masterclass performance? Have you been asked to speak at an upcoming conference or participate in a panel discussion? Go for it! The Universe is asking you to expand your horizons.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 7th house of relationships. You will spend a lot of time connecting to colleagues, old and new, when Jupiter changes houses. Reach out to some of your former flute friends. What are they up to? Do they need help with any projects? Make new flute friends! Hop on a flute forum and share your ideas. Comment on blog posts you find interesting. Participate in virtual flute masterclasses and interact in the chat.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 10th house of career goals. Your attention will shift back onto your career goals when the Sun moves signs. Now that you have spent some time clarifying exactly what your goals are, the Sun will urge you to create new action plans. How will get from where you are today to where you want to be in the next year? 5 years? 10 years? Brainstorm new ideas and take the next steps.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 4th house of home and family. Something in your environment will need to change around the time of this Lunar Eclipse. Is your studio space cluttered with old furniture and papers that do not need to be there? Can you make a better space in a different location of your house? Can you update furniture, computer equipment, or even just add a few new pieces of inspirational art? Can you soundproof your space, making it possible to practice later into the evening? Go for it! Make your space work for you.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 10th house of career goals. You’ve revamped your materials. You’ve searched job boards for new opportunities. You are passionate again about music. So, why is nothing coming your way? Blame Mercury retrograde. Mercury will ask you to take a step back and reexamine your online presence to make sure you are indeed representing yourself correctly to the World. Mercury wants you to be genuine – Not the flutist that others expect you to be, but the flutist you know you are or are capable of being in the future.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Expand your horizons this month, both physically and intellectually. Is there somewhere you wish to go? Why does it interest you? Take some time to learn more about this location. What is the culture like? What is the music scene? How is the weather? If you can travel there, take a short adventure! If not, spend some time writing about this place on your blog on other social media outlets.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 9th house of travel and higher education. This is a great time to daydream about your next vacation. What opportunities are out there to take your flute playing on the road? Where would you most like to perform? Can you host a recital in a beautiful far-off locale in the future? Start thinking about a fun musical adventure.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. The New Moon may have you considering upgrading your flute. Before you start charging a new Burkhardt to your credit card, devise a financing plan that works with your existing budget. How much can you save up front to make a monthly payment most realistic?

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. When Jupiter moves into your 6th house, you may find that certain tasks on your daily to-do list just seem to work themselves out. Need a sub for a rehearsal? Easy – contact that grad student searching for more local playing opportunities. Your students need to reschedule lessons? No problem – time batch them on the same day for efficiency. Jupiter will urge you to spend less time worrying about the nitty gritty and more time having fun!

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Your attention will be on your next adventure. Going stir-crazy Libra? Take a few day trips to interesting local destinations. The Sun literally wants you to spend more time in the Sun. Leave your flute in its case and enjoy the Spring air.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 3rd house of communication. A writing project you are working on may need some serious revisions or may need to be scrapped all together. Don’t panic – Instead try to use this time to carefully read through your work. Have you veered off from your original topic? Do all of your points connect to the bigger picture? Can you simplify or streamline your writing so that it is more accessible to your readers? Review, revise, and republish.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 9th house of travel and higher education. Try to avoid making concrete travel plans during this retrograde, or at least have a backup plan in case they are delayed or canceled. Update the operating system on phones and computers and pack a few extra chargers. Check. That. You. Have. All. Of. Your. Music. A mercury retrograde can be unpredictable. Expect the unexpected.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. This is a great time to sit down with your local banking institution and create savings and loan repayment plans. Pay off any balance you can. Have a large educational loan that you are trying pay off? What are your options? Income-based repayment plans? Loan forgiveness? You will want to clean up your finances as much as possible because a new purchase (such as a new flute) is on the horizon.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 8th house of banking and finance. Although you may not yet be in a position to purchase a new flute until your finances are in order, now is a great time to start window shopping. What types of flutes are you looking at? What is your projected budget? What features would you like on your next instrument? What models are you interested in trying? Venus loves to shop (even if the money is not quite there yet).

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships. You will make an important new connection around the time of this New Moon. It is not easy for Scorpios to network but this time you could be at the right place at the right time. Perhaps you will suddenly meet a conductor searching for another flutist for their orchestra. Or you will connect with another flutist with a great idea for a collaborative project. Schedule a coffee chat (virtual or otherwise) to discuss the possibilites.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. You will spend a lot of time doing things that simply bring you joy when Jupiter moves signs. Chances are you have been overbooked and overworked lately. Experiencing burnout? It’s okay. Start saying “no” to activities that drain you (or delegate them to someone who might enjoy them more) and make time for activities that energize you. Dare I say, practice what you want just for fun. Do whatever makes you smile.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. Your focus will again be on your finances when the Sun moves signs. It is likely that you have finally put your savings plan into place. And it’s not as easy as you thought. Keep your focus on the end goal. You are saving for something great (such as a new flute). Imagine how wonderful it will be at the end of your savings journey when you are performing on your brand-new instrument.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 2nd house of income. Something in your job needs to change and, if it cannot be changed, you may need to start looking for opportunities elsewhere. Do not panic – this is for your own happiness and well-being. You may be overworked (Jupiter taught you this earlier in the month) and no longer wish to sacrifice your health to the current circumstances. The good news, as we learn in the Alexander Technique, is that we all have choices in our lives. If your work does not work for you, change it!

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 8th house of banking and finance. Check.Your.Account.Balances. Mercury retrograde in your 8th house means that you may experience some glitches in any online payments, which can also make you vulnerable to scummy identity thieves. Report anything that looks suspicious. More likely, however, is that you have not really been keeping track of some of your accounts and may have less money available than you think.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 7th house of relationships. Mercury will ask you to chat up your current flute friends and make new connections when he moves signs. What are they up to? Any projects they could use your help on? Have you read their blogs lately? Respond to interesting threads on flute forums, Twitter, YouTube and any other social media outlet that may prove interesting. Network. Network. Network.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 7th house of relationships. Chance are, you will get into a very interesting conversation with one of your music colleagues. Perhaps it is an old orchestra friend. Reminisce with about the good old days of live performances together. Maybe you will instead connect with another flutist with a great idea for a podcast or series of interviews. Laugh, plan, and dream with this individual!

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You may be receiving new opportunities at work around the time of this New Moon. A smaller chamber group comprised of yourself and a few of your favorite orchestral colleagues may be forming. You may be asked to judge a competition or speak on a panel about the future of the music industry. This is a great opportunity from the Universe.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 4th house of home and family. You will want to spend a lot of time at home when Jupiter moves signs. Thanksgiving in May? Why not! Eat, laugh, watch moves, play sports, and simply just hang out with your loved ones. Engage them in your music by performing a living room recital.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 7th house of relationships. You will be a social butterfly when the Sun moves signs. Connect with flutists that you admire. What can they teach you about flute playing, music, and life? Reach out to flutists whose work you find interesting. There may be collaborative opportunities in the future!

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 1st house of identity. The Full Moon will ask you to take an honest look at yourself and some of your most important goals. What means the most to you in both your personal and professional lives? What sometimes gets in the way of working on these goals? Can you walk away from goals set a long time ago that just do not have a place in your life anymore? This may create more time and energy to focus on other priorities.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 7th house of relationships. There is a chance that you will have miscommunications amongst your friends and colleagues when Mercury goes retrograde. Be careful about how you address mistakes in your orchestra section or how you explain new concepts to your students. Mercury can sometimes make the simplest directions as clear as mud when in retrograde. Be patient with others and communicate as clearly as possible.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. So.Many.Emails. Get ready to spend some time on your computer at the beginning of the month responding to inquiries. Someone needs you to sub for an ensemble while somebody else needs you to guest conduct their flute choir. You may also receive a number of messages from other music colleagues requesting your advice and expertise. Try to time-batch your responses so they do not take over your entire life.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You will likely have a nice chat with a trusted colleague when Venus moves into your 6th house. Perhaps they will offer to take a responsibility or two off of your plate so you can spend more time working on more important projects (such as an upcoming recital).

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Armed with a more streamlined task list, you may be suddenly inspired to start working on a creative project around the time of the New Moon. Have you ever wanted to host a lecturer recital? Or write a piece of music? Or record a CD? Now is the time to start brainstorming.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 3rd house of communication. An idea that you had recently for an article may suddenly snowball into a much larger book project. You may be on to something great and Jupiter will help you gather the research you need to formulate a masterpiece. This will require you to put in some time up front and create an outline. Roll up your sleeves and get to work!

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You will be busy when the Sun shift signs, Capricorn. You have a lot of commitments on your daily to-do list between teaching, performing, rehearsals, and everything in between. Be sure to make time in your busy schedule for exercise, proper nutrition, and sleep. You can’t give 100 unless you give 100 to yourself first!

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Capricorns enjoy predictable, tried-and-true routines. The Lunar Eclipse, however, will force you to reexamine your practice routine. Something that used to work for you in the past just doesn’t work anymore. Perhaps your approach does not challenge you to think outside of the box. Or you may find yourself mindlessly drilling scales and excerpts without practicing ways to make them better or your performance more unique. What can you change?

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Be prepared for the unexpected at work when Mercury goes retrograde. You may be asked to fill in for a sick player in a local orchestra without much notice. You may be asked to sit on a panel for seating auditions unexpectedly without seeing the music ahead of time. Your students may cancel lessons unexpectedly and rehearsals may be rescheduled at the last minute. Try to be as flexible as possible. Go with the flow!

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. You may have a really good idea for a creative project but find your thoughts taking off in a million different directions. Schedule a coffee chat (virtual or otherwise) with a very grounded, trusted colleague (a Scorpio, Virgo, or Aries perhaps). You need a sounding board that will help you put all of the pieces together in one clear package. Virgos can help you devise a movement structure and basic form for your symphony. Scorpios can help you create a streamlined action plan for all of the necessary tasks needed to record your CD. Aries can help you prioritize which tasks must be done ASAP.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Write about your ideas for a creative project on your flute blog. This a great time to get some feedback from your flute friends. Send out a poll or solicit thoughts and opinions on a Flute Forum. You may find some really great ideas from sources you hadn’t considered.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. Are you moving, Aquarius? Something new will likely appear in your environment around the time of this New Moon. Perhaps you have received an opportunity to move to a larger house across town or are thinking about an even bigger move across the country. Now is a great time to chat with your family members about this move. Are they on board? What do they need in their new space?

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 2nd house of income. You will likely receive an unexpected financial gift or, more likely, a raise when Jupiter moves into your 2nd house. Congrats! Beware: there may be strings attached to this gift. Make sure to read all of the fine print. This will be well worth the effort for a much-needed boost in income!

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. Your focus will shift again onto your creative project when the Sun moves signs. The financial windfall that you received from Jupiter may help you attract some of the resources you will need to complete your project. Invest in yourself and your ideas!

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. There may be a performing group that no longer fits into your schedule. Perhaps the rehearsal schedule conflicts with your already packed calendar or you just have one too many groups on your plate at the moment. It is okay to take a step back from this group. Try not to burn any bridges and keep the door open to future possibilities performing again with your colleagues.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 5th house of creativity and joy. You may have some revisions to make on your creative project with Mercury goes retrograde. Take some time to proofread your work with a magnifying glass. Where can you streamline your ideas? Do you really need that 2nd movement or that dance sequence in the opening movement? Where can you make something shine a bit brighter? Rethink any ideas that do not seem to fit in with the bigger picture.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 4th house of home and family. This a great time to have a family meeting. Are your loved ones super annoyed by your late-night practicing? Is your teaching or rehearsal schedule causing conflict in the house? Order some pizza and talk it out. Chances are there are some good win-win compromises to be made.

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 4th house of home and family. Now that you have worked a few things out with your family, Venus will ask you to hug it out. Spend some quality time with them! Orchestrate a movie night. Plan a picnic in the park. Game night, anybody?

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. You may be suddenly inspired to write a book or an article about a really interesting flute-related topic. Is there a composer whose work really speaks to you? Or a unique technique that you use in your studio? What about your best-kept practice tips? Write about it! If you are not ready to send your work to a publisher, post some of your writing on your flute blog instead.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 1st house of identity. If you believe in the Power of Attraction, Jupiter will help you bring all of the abundance of the Universe into your life when he moves signs. What is it that you most want? Is it a new flute? Is it a new job? Is it a recording contract? Create a flute-inspired vision board! Find pictures of everything you want your ideal flute life to look like, post them on a piece of paper or poster board, and hang them somewhere you will see them every day. If you believe in it, it will eventually be yours.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 4th house of home and family. Catch some Springtime rays with your family and friends when the Sun moves signs. If it is safe to arrange a socially distant barbeque, go for it! Or at least grab some delicious take out and head to the beach for an afternoon. This month is more about finding joy than burning the midnight oil. Find your bliss!

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 10th house of career goals. Take a critical look at your long-term career goals around the time of this eclipse. There may be something that is outdated and no longer worth the time investment. Search your soul. Do you really want to devote your life to a solo career? Or practice excerpts for the rest of your days? Your career does not have to look the same as every other professional flutist – Strive to be something better.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 4th house of home and family. Be careful not to step into any misunderstandings with your family during the Mercury Retrograde. If you said you would practice on a different schedule, try your best to stick to that promise. Try to be as patient as possible with your loved ones during this time. They may not be hearing you clearly and you may not be hearing them either.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

May 3rd – Mercury moves into your 3rd house of communication. Write, write, write, then write some more! When the planet of communication steps into the house of communication, it’s all about getting your thoughts out into the World. Writing can often be scary – perfectionists beware. But you have a lot of really great ideas to share and connections to be made with like-minded flutists. Put it out there!

May 8th – Venus joins Mercury in your 3rd house of communication. Schedule some time to just chat with some of your flute friends (both near and far). What are they working on? What is their performance life like these days? How are their students thriving in today’s world of Zoom lessons? Compare notes and learn from each other’s experiences.

May 11th – A New Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. You may receive a new job offer around the time of this New Moon. Congrats! This is a really great opportunity for a pay bump as your talents are finally being rewarded. There may be added responsibilities with this offer but if you strategize and keep an open mind as you learn, this will definitely be the beginning of something wonderful.

May 13th – Jupiter moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. You will have a lot to work on in the practice room when Jupiter moves signs. Practice all of the things (and then some). Practice exercises you thought you’d never practice again (Jean Jean Etudes…I’m looking at you!). Practice pieces that you love and pieces that challenge you to your core. Find those technical passages that have haunted you – Jupiter may help you to think about them in a different light.

May 20th – The Sun moves into your 3rd house of communication. Spend some time posting on your flute blog when the Sun moves signs. Write about whatever is on your flute-playing mind. Write about struggles in the practice room. Write about super awesome teaching techniques you have come across. Analyze one of your favorite pieces of music. Use your blog to let your creative mind flow.

May 26th – A Full Moon Lunar Eclipse appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. You may have booked a trip a long time ago that will be canceled around the time of the Lunar Eclipse. Did you really want to go on this trip or were you convinced to go by a well-meaning relative or friend? Let it go and book something else for a future date. Visit a beach far away or enjoy the English countryside when it is safe to do so again.

May 29th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 3rd house of communication. Miscommunications are likely to happen when the planet of communication goes retrograde in the house of communication. Keep all emails and text messages short and sweet. If you have to work on tricky things such as intonation or woodshedding elaborate technical passages, do so with the utmost patience. Others will not understand what you are trying to say and you will not quite understand what they are trying to play. Slow practice is advised and overtly positive encouragement is highly encouraged.

Happy May!
