Hernán Jara Salas Artist Interview
Chilean flutist, Hernán Jara Salas was trained at the Music Institute of the Catholic University of Chile. Principal Flute Soloist of the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile Professor of the Modern School of Music and Dance.
Can you give us 5 career highlights?
Winner of the position of Soloist in Flute of the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile 1992.
Award "Altazor" of the National Arts 2009, mention Musical Performance.
Musical Career Award, Celebrating the 70 Years of the Modern School of Music and Dance, 2010.
Award for work accomplished at the Music Institute of the Catholic University of Chile, 2010.
In 2003, Hernán received the award for Best Soloist of the Year from the Modern Orchestra.
How about 3 pivotal moments that were essential to creating the artist that you've become?
To have developed as an integral musician, addressing all kinds of music styles.
Having discovered the Flute Pedagogy early and perfecting myself to teach until now.
To be part of the Symphony Orchestra of Chile where I have had the opportunity to play great works and meet high-level Conductors and Soloists.
What do you like best about teaching?
I like to teach that Students are organized and have solutions to their problems and consciously exploit their virtues.
What do you like best about performing?
Playing Soloist with Orchestra and playing Latin American Works.
CD releases?
I have 3 CDs as a soloist, 2 with Quinteto de Vientos Pro-Arte, 3 with Grupo fusion Ensamble Serenata and participated in many productions in Chile and other countries.
What does your schedule look like for the next 6 months?
I must record Chilean Music for Solo Flute, Flute and Percussion within the framework of the “In Crescendo” Season of my Orchestra and promote new work in which I participated. "Acero Jazz".
What are your goals personally? Professionally?
To keep playing and teaching much longer.
What inspires you the most in life?
My Family, happiness and the privilege of being a musician.
What has been your greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge has been to train myself as a musician with a lot of effort and strategy, having many professors and teachers who taught me and continue to teach me in this eternal perfection process that is music.
Who were your music mentors? and what did you learn from them?
There were many, the most important in Chile was Alberto Harms, in Argentina, Lars Nilsson and in Brazil, Jean Noél Saghaard. And I have to mention that I learned a lot with flutists of my generation such as Alberto Almarza, Felix Renggli and colleagues from the Orchestra in which I have played.
Can you give us 5 quirky, secret, fun, (don't think too much about this) hobbies or passions?
Carpentry
Repairing stuff
Eating and drinking well
Traveling
Good humor
What 3 things would you offer as advice for a young flutist?
Don't compete with others, just compete with yourself.
Be conscientious when studying and do not waste time.
Have Projects and plan your life to achieve them.
Be a happy musician for what he does.
Be creative, have a lot of imagination to play.

Tres cosas que marcaron el artista que lo formó?
Haberme desarrollado como músico integral, abordando todo tipo de Estilos de Música.
Haber descubierto que la Pedagogía de la Flauta tempranamente y perfeccionarme para enseñar hasta ahora.
Integrar la Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile en donde he tenido la oportunidad de tocar grandes Obras y conocer a Directores y Solistas de gran nivel.
Que le gusta más que nada de enseñar?
Me gusta enseñar a que los Alumnos sean organizados y tengan soluciones a sus problemas y exploten sus virtudes concientemente.
Que le gusta más que nada de tocar en público?
Tocar de Solista con Orquesta y tocar Obras latinoamericanas.
CD releases?
Tengo 3 Cds como solista, 2 con Quinteto de Vientos Pro-Arte,3 con Grupo fusión Ensamble Serenata y participado en muchas producciones en Chile y otros países.
Qué hará dentro de los próximos 6 meses?
Debo grabar Música Chilena para Flauta sola, Flauta y Percusión en el marco de Temporada “In Crescendo” de mi Orquesta y promover nuevo trabajo en donde participé. “Acero Jazz”.
Metas personales? Metas profesionales?
Seguir tocando y enseñando mucho tiempo más.
Que lo inspira más en la vida?
Mi Familia, la felicidad y el Privilegio de ser Músico.
Que ha sido su gran desafío?
Formarme como músico con mucho esfuerzo y estratégicamente, teniendo muchos Profesores y Maestros que me han enseñado y siguen enseñando en este perfeccionamiento eterno que es la Música.
Quiénes fueron sus profesores y qué aprendió de ellos?
Fueron muchos ,los más importantes en Chile Alberto Harms,Argentina Lars Nilsson y en Brasil Jean Noél Saghaard.Y mencionar que aprendí mucho con flautistas de mi generación como Alberto Almarza, Felix Renggli y colegas de las Orquesta en que he tocado.

Tres consejos para un joven flautista?
No competir, sólo competir consigo mismo.
Ser conciente al estudiar y no perder el tiempo.
Tener Proyectos y planificar tu vida para lograrlos.
Ser un músico feliz de lo que hace.
Ser creativo , tener mucha Imaginación para tocar.
