Happy August! The summer is winding down as the planets continue their predictable dance through the zodiac. There will be a general focus on one particular house for each sign this month, starting with Mercury playing a key role at the beginning of the month to help get the conversation started, the Sun shining a spotlight mid-month to redirect focus, and a New Moon at the end of the month that will bring in new opportunities and exciting pathways forward. Follow the cues of the Universe this month to uncover hints as to what to do next. August is all about redesigning your goals and creating something new.
0000Leo (July 23-August 22) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income. This is a great time to make your case for a promotion. Sit down with your conductor and ask how you can earn your way to more challenging parts.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships. One of your relationships, either professional or personal, is in need of some serious TLC. Have you been having communication issues with a student? Use the energy of this Full Moon to clear the air and establish some ground rules moving forward.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 1st house of identity, joining the Sun. You will literally be in the spotlight when Venus and the Sun join forces. This is the very best time to host a recital. Play some of your favorite works and invite all of your favorite friends, family, and fellow flutists.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. You will be knee-deep in rehearsals when Mars moves signs. Take advantage of this super productive energy! Host a sectional to work on those difficult passages and tricky spots that seem to confuse everybody.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 2nd house of income. Your focus will shift onto your career when the Sun moves signs. You may have received some great career advice earlier in the month and are now ready to take those next steps. Go for the gold and don’t look back!
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 3rd house of communication. It is always a great time to write when the planet of communication moves into the house of communication. Do you have a flute blog yet? If not, this is the perfect time to set one up! Write about what interests you about the flute or your particular flute-playing niche.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. It is quite likely that you will receive a job offer around the end of the month. Congrats! Your strategic thinking about your career has paid off and you are about to receive a wonderful new opportunity from the Universe. Jump in and learn all there is to know about this role.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 1st house of income. Mercury will encourage you to ask for exactly what you need at the beginning of the month. Do you need more time to practice? Let others know you are not available during specific time blocks during the week. Do you need a new instrument? Start contacting various instrument shops about models in your price range.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 6th house of work and health routines. Something in your daily schedule just isn’t working. Are you spending too much time on activities that do not really move you forward personally nor professionally? Eliminate these things or delegate them to others. Fill the time instead with flute activities that you enjoy! Reprioritize to live your best flute life.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities, joining the Sun. Practice from the heart when Venus moves signs. What pieces really make you feel unstoppable? Which ones bring back great memories of past performances? Relive some warm fuzzies by adding these to the end of your daily practice routine.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 10th house of career goals. Mars is asking you to take charge of your career. Start applying to jobs anywhere and everywhere. Take all of the auditions and interviews that are offered to you. Contact old conductors to see if they could use an extra flutist.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 1st house of identity. Your focus will shift onto your most important goals when the Sun moves signs. Are you living your best flute life or are there steps you could take to become a flutist more authentic to your unique personality? Find your niche and own it!
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income. This is a great time to to ask your boss for a raise, or, if you’ve recently applied to a job, negotiate a job offer. Don’t be shy – Make your case and know your worth. Then ask for it! You deserve to be compensated for your unique talent and experience.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. An important new opportunity comes your way around the time of this New Moon. Perhaps you will get that new job! Or finally purchase that new flute! Or nail that dream audition! Follow the cues of the Universe and say yes to any great new offers that come your way.
Libra (September 23-October 22)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Do you have a flute blog yet? This is a great time to share some of your best practice ideas with the internet. What methods work well for you? How do you balance your practice time? What are your go-to exercises? Write about it!
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. A creative project you had been working on has become a bit stuck. Take a step back and look at the bigger picture. How cohesive is your work? Have you included sub sections that are interesting on their own but do not add much to the work as a whole? This Full Moon will ask you to edit your work. Streamline what can be streamlined.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 11th house of groups and communities, joining the Sun. This is a great time to host a masterclass for your students or a sectional with your fellow flutists. Venus will not only make you (and your ideas) popular but will also help you identify the strengths of others and explore ways to use them in a group setting.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Mars will ask you to get out of the practice room and go on an adventure. Book an end-of-summer get-away. Head to the beach for a picnic. Take a hike in the woods or a ride up a mountain on a gondola. Leave your flute at home and have fun!
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Your attention will shift onto the practice room when the Sun moves signs. Practice all of the things. Explore that fabulous new etude book you found at a recent convention. Practice that great piece your heard at a recital last year.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 1st house of identity. Say what you mean and mean what you say when Mercury moves signs. What do you need the most in your flute life? Is it practice time? Tell folks that you are unavailable during practice blocks. Is it a new flute? Book a trail on the flute of your dreams.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. This New Moon will bring you a new piece to practice for your next recital. Dig in! Break it down and practice in chunks. Transpose it. Woodshed in any way that makes sense to you. This is a great piece that will showcase your flute playing nicely.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. This is a great time to host a lecture for your local flute club or other community music organization. Share your research with folks that may really connect with your ideas. Do they have good suggestions for new paths forward?
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. Something in your environment just is not working for you. Is your studio space cluttered? Do some reorganizing. Downsize your music collection by scanning scores that you do not use that often. Upgrade your furniture and remove any bulky items that you no longer have space for.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 10th house of career goals, joining the Sun. Scorpios like to go for the gold in their careers. No mountain is too high or trail to long. But sometimes we end up pursing goals in the name of achievement that do not truly make us happy. Venus will ask you to reconsider some of your career goals. Are you driving towards a career that brings harmony and pride to your life? Are you trying to be the flutist that you really want to be?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. Mars wants you to pay up on any loans or credit card balances you have outstanding. Did you recently purchase a new flute on a financing agreement? Try to make a larger than usual payment this month.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. Your focus will shift onto your performing groups when the Sun moves signs. You may find yourself knee-deep in auditions or rehearsals. Welcome to the new performance season! You will be busy but having a great time connecting with your musical colleagues.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Do you have a flute blog yet? This is a great time to blog about some of your best kept practice tips. How do you organize your practice time? Do you have themes for each day of the week? Do you have any go-to exercises that you use on the regular? Blog about it!
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may have recently auditioned for a new group. This New Moon will likely offer you the chair. Congrats! You have worked very hard for this new opportunity. Make the most out of it!
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals. This is a great time to meet with an adviser or trusted colleague to discuss your career. Are you on the right track towards the career of your dreams or are you simply trying to accomplish goals because you feel compelled to accomplish them for somebody else? Work with your advisor to eliminate those goals that no longer serve your best interests and focus on taking the next steps toward more meaningful ambitions.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. You may experience a bit of writer’s block around the time of this Full Moon. Working on a book or article? Take a step back and do some serious proofreading. Where can you truncate your ideas? Do all of your ideas connect to your overall theme? If not, let them go. Streamline your work – Sometimes less is more.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education, joining the Sun. Venus wants you to take a vacay. Book a trip to some place warm, beautiful, relaxing, and/or interesting. Where would you most like to go? Leave your flute at home and take an adventure.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 7th house of relationships. Mars will ask you to do some serious networking. Connect with your flute friends both in person and online. Message one of your flute idols. Ask the tough questions that others are too afraid to ask. Start a new dialogue with others. You may be surprised at how closely the experiences of other flutists match your own.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 10th house of career goals. Your attention will shift onto you career when the Sun moves signs. Now that you have reprioritized your goals, you are ready to take the next steps. Apply to interesting positions that match your priorities. Take auditions with groups that you know you’d like to perform with.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. Host a sectional or two when Mercury moves signs. This is a great time to connect with your fellow musicians and hash out those tricky technical bits in your orchestra music. Listen to other suggestions for new ways to approach these sections. Try everything and be patient with yourself and your colleagues.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. This New Moon will likely bring a new job opportunity to you at the end of the month. Take it! This job is perfectly aligned with your most important goals. The connections you make in this position will open important doors down the road.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Are you considering going back to school? Or pursuing a new field of study? This is a great time to chat with an advisor for the program to get the 411. What will this course entail? What priorities do you have for the course? Most importantly, how will it relate to your flute study?
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. You may be saying goodbye to a job around the time of this Full Moon. This is not necessarily a bad thing. You might have received a promotion to a different organization and now must break the news to your current employers. Keep it positive and work with your boss to set up a reasonable transition plan.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 8th house of banking and finance, joining the Sun. Venus will help you attract the resources to finally make a large purchase. You may be buying a new flute or even a house. What are your options? Is there a loan or financing program that could help you make your purchase sooner rather than later?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Mars will help you check off everything on your daily to-do lists (and then some). This is great energy to help you achieve your practice goals, crush your work priorities, crush your lessons, and still have energy at the end of the day to exercise, eat right, and sleep. You will be more productive than ever before.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Your head will be in the clouds when the Sun changes signs. Thinking about a get-away, Cap? Now is the time to book a wonderful end-of-summer adventure to the beach. Leave your flute at home and enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it!
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals. Mercury will encourage you to meet with a career advisor or trusted mentor to hash out the next best steps to take in your music career. Are you on the right track or have your priorities shifted? Remove old goals that no longer interest you.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 9th hour of travel and higher education. You may decide to embark on that new course of study at the end of the month. Congrats! This will be a wonderful opportunity to expand your horizons and learn something new. Keep and open mind and find creative ways to connect your new knowledge to your existing flute life.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. This is a great time to meet with a financial advisor to discuss some of your financing options when it comes to an important large purchase. Are you hoping to buy a new flute? What loan options are available? Are there financing options through instrument retailers?
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. The Full Moon will ask you to do a bit of soul searching when it comes to your flute playing life. What do you love about being a flutist? What motivates you? Do you have enough flute-playing opportunities available to you? If not, create some space in your life to do more of what you love and less of what you dread.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 7th house of relationships, joining the Sun. Venus will ask you to connect to your most important flute friends and/or musical colleagues. Invite them out to coffee (virtual or otherwise) and discuss current projects. Are there any opportunities to collaborate in the future?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. Do you have an awesome idea for a creative project (hello, lecture recital!)? Mars will help you devise an action plan to get your project off the ground running. Start taking the first steps on this plan, no matter how big or small.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. Your focus will shift onto your large purchase when the Sun moves signs. Start devising a reasonable savings plan. How much will you need to put away each month to pay your bill? Is there anything you can cut from your current budget to pay a bit more? How long do you intend to make payments?
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. If you are considering going to back to school or pursing a new field of study, Mercury will encourage you to meet with an advisor or trusted colleague to consider what impact this program will have on your flute playing life. Will this help you form a new niche in the market? What do you hope to gain from this program?
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. You may receive a gift or a private loan from a wealthy benefactor to help you with your large purchase. Someone wants to help make your dreams into a reality. Remember to express gratitude to both the Universe (thanks, Universe!) as well as your sponsor. Include them in the purchasing process, if at all possible.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 7th house of relationships. Do some networking at the beginning of the month, Pisces. Connect with flute friends old and new both online and in-person. What are folks working on? Are there any opportunities to collaborate in the future?
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Something you’ve been practicing just isn’t coming together and you may be at your wit’s end. Perhaps you have practiced it in every way possible – slow, fast, in chunks, in different meters and different keys – and still it stumps you. Let it go. It is totally okay to abandon this work and find a new piece that resonates better with your unique playing style.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines, joining the Sun. Make room in your schedule for activities that you enjoy when Venus moves signs. Do you really love teaching students in a masterclass setting? Schedule some larger group get-togethers. Do you enjoy attending recitals by other musicians? Book some tickets and enjoy some great performances.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 4th house of home and family. Do you have a great idea for a home and/or studio renovation project? When Mars moves signs, you will be inspired to get to work. Repair all of those old, squeaky drawers and cabinets. Declutter old furniture and office supplies. Yank out old, dirty carpets and update your space with hardwood floors.

Have you paired up with another flute friend on a project or joint recital? Start working out what needs to be done first. Who will be responsible for which aspects of your project? Make a plan for the coming months.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. This is a great time to discuss financing options for a large purchase with a bank administrator or financial adviser. Perhaps your home studio renovations have become a bit pricier than you thought. Are there short-term loans available to pay the bill now while making payments to the bank later?
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships. You will make an important new connection at the end of the month with someone quite influential. Perhaps you will meet a conductor searching for a fabulous flutist like yourself. Or maybe you will find an accompanist that just seems to get you.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Schedule all of the meetings and make-up lessons you have been procrastinating when Mercury moves signs. Mercury will help you keep your messages (and instructions) very clear and efficient. Be careful to not get too carried away with your explanations – Remember, sometimes less is more.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may be saying goodbye to a performing group around the time of this Full Moon. Perhaps the rehearsals or performances conflict with another group or maybe you are just too busy with other responsibilities to give this group the attention it deserves. It is okay to gracefully move on. Make sure to keep strong connections with your colleagues as you move to the next chapter.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy, joining the Sun. It is always a great time when the planet of creativity sets up shop in the house of creativity. Do some brainstorming on some of your most creative flute ideas. Nothing is too big! Is there a product you would like to create? Start drawing up design ideas. What do you need to start creating this fabulous new product?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 3rd house of communication. Mars will encourage you to write, write, and then write some more. Do you have a great idea for a book or article? Start with a basic outline and begin drafting. Have a favorite practice technique? A collection of go-to technical studies? A unique idea for how to approach standard repertoire? Write about it!
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You will be very busy when the Sun moves signs. Everybody wants to meet with you, rehearse with you, and start collaborating with you. Try to remember to keep balance between professional and personal activities. Avoid late night practice sessions and eating macaroni over the kitchen sink.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 7th house of relationships. This is a great time to invite some of your closest flute friends out for coffee (virtual or otherwise). What are others working on? What are the challenges and opportunities facing your colleagues today? Are there any opportunities to collaborate on future projects?
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You may receive an invitation to sub for a local orchestra at the end of the month. Even though your schedule is a bit out of control, do what you can to reorganize your time and priorities to make sure you can fit in rehearsals and/or performances with this group. This is a great opportunity that will open doors for you in the future.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. Do you have a great idea for a creative project, concert series, or composition? Chat with a trusted advisor or colleague about your concept. They may have some good ideas for ways to execute your project or add important details that you had not yet considered.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. The Full Moon will ask you to do some serious soul-searching when it comes to your career. Write down all of your short-term and long-term goals. What would you like to accomplish in the next year, five years, and ten years. Now take a step back and rate your goals from 1 (most important) to 10 (not important or a goal you feel obligated to accomplish because some well-meaning mentor told you was necessary years ago). What do you notice? Drop any 10s and redirect your time and efforts toward the 1s, 2s, and 3s.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 4th house of home and family, joining the Sun. Venus will urge you to spend time with your family when it moves signs. Practice at home more this month. Spend your practice breaks hanging out with your loved ones. Find creative ways to bring them into your practice process. Mock audition, anybody?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 2nd house of income. Mars will motivate you to cruise the job market. You are in search of a new opportunity. Have you felt stuck in a job rut? Apply to positions that offer exciting challenges and pathways to bigger and better gigs in the future.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. Your focus will shift onto your budding creative project when it moves signs. Take the first steps. What resources do you need? Do you need to collaborate with any outside vendors, accompanists, or other artists? What does your timeline look like? Use this time to devise your action plan.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You will be booked up with meetings and make-up lessons thanks to Mercury. Try to be as clear and efficient as possible with your words. Mercury sometimes leads us over-explain. Remember not to schedule yourself too thin. Work-life balance is important.
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Your creative project might have caught the attention of an important company or marketing executive. Collaborate closely with this person. They can help drum up buzz for your work with influential companies. You have a great idea that will interest a lot of flutists.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 4th house of home and family. This is a great time to have a family meeting. Is your practice schedule causing some tension in your house? Can you rearrange your practice so that it does not interfere with other household events? Do you need better soundproofing in your home studio? Or could you move your practice to an off-site location? Explore your options.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. A trip you had been planning may be postponed or even cancelled around the time of this Full Moon. Try to remain as flexible as possible. Instead, plan a bigger and better trip for a future date. Hawaii in the winter sounds nice!
August 11th – Venus moves into your 3rd house of communication, joining the Sun. Do you have a flute blog yet? If not, this is a good opportunity to write a few opinion pieces. Talk about the aspects of flute playing that inspire you the most. Do you have a favorite composer? Or a favorite performance venue? Share some of your most memorable flute experiences. Chances are there are other flutists out there that could benefit from your flute wisdom.
August 20th – Mars moves into your 1st house of identity. Mars will ask you to roll up your sleeves and get to work on your most important goals. This is the very best time to host a recital. Or, better yet, a series of recitals or related performances. Volunteer to sub in various ensembles. Host a masterclass in your area (even if it is just for your students). If it is meaningful to you and your flute playing, jump right in!
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 4th house of home and family. Your focus will shift to your family when the Sun moves signs. Leave your flute at home and take your family to the beach. Attend a fun symphony performance in the park. Mozart can wait until next month!
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 5th house of creativity and joy. Do you have a great idea for a creative project? Test out your ideas on your flute blog. What does your initial research conclude? Do you have any great related project ideas? Write about it!
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. You may be moving to a new house or at least a new studio space at the end of the month. Make your new space work better for you. Streamline your furniture and updated any electronics. Add an inspirational piece of art or some beautiful new window coverings.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
August 4th – Mercury moves into your 3rd house of communication. Whenever the planet of communications moves into the house of communications, the energy is perfect to write up a storm. Do you have a great idea for a book or article? Create an outline and start drafting your ideas. Just write whatever comes to mind – You can revise later.
August 11th – A Full Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. You may be making the final payment on a large purchase or loan. Did you purchase a new flute recently? After you pay this final bill, you will officially own your new instrument. Congrats! Celebrate this milestone by rewarding yourself with a new cleaning cloth or other flute accessory.
August 11th – Venus moves into your 2nd house of income, joining the Sun. Venus will help you attract more money at your job. This may come in the form of a promotion (don’t be afraid to ask for one) or a new job entirely. Check out the audition notices and job boards. Is there a new opportunity that fits your skill set?
August 20th – Mars moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Mars will send you into the practice room at the end of the month. Use this energy to practice all of the things. Check out that fabulous new etude book folks are raving about. Woodshed that piece you’ve always wanted to perform. Find that scary method book in your collection that you typically avoid.
August 22nd – Sun moves into your 3rd house of communication. Your focus will shift again onto your writing when the Sun moves signs. This is a great time to start proofreading your work. Can you streamline your ideas in any way? Can you add an important chapter here or a great musical example there? Think outside the box.
August 25th – Mercury moves into your 4th house of home and family. This is a great time to host a family meeting. What do calendars look like in the upcoming months? Do any of your performance conflict with other family commitments? Rearrange schedules to the best of your ability. Are win-win scenarios possible? Can your family members attend your performances? Make it happen!
August 27th – A New Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. Send your draft article or book chapter to a publisher. There is a good chance, with this New Moon’s influence, that your work will be accepted for publication. Congrats! Remember to make any necessary updates based on the editor’s feedback and promote the final publication on all of your social media pages.
