DR. G’s FLUTE HOROSCOPES November 2022
Happy November! It wouldn’t be Scorpio season without a bit of intensity! Thanks to a Lunar Eclipse at the beginning of the month, November delivers that cosmic punch we all need to uproot tired old practices and completely change our lives for the better. Pay close attention for signs from the Universe to end what no longer works. Your best flute life may be hiding under a rock just waiting to be turned over. The rest of the month centers around one house on the other side of the Zodiac chart. Venus, Mercury, the Sun, and a New Moon are all setting up shop to reinforce passions, messages, inspirations, and new opportunities. Don’t be afraid to take a page out of the Scorpio playbook and dive deep into this house. You may find that new ideas are living at the very tips of your fingertips.
Scorpio (October 23-November 21) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 7th house of relationships joining Uranus. This Lunar Eclipse will ask you to make serious changes to any relationships that have turned toxic. Who makes you feel less than awesome? Who do you find yourself struggling to communicate with? Is it a colleague? A student? A power-mad administrator in a group that tends to rob you of your fierce Scorpio mojo? It is time to have those difficult conversations. There may be connections that have reached their expiration date.
November 16th – Venus moves into your 2nd house of income. Venus will help you attract fantastic new promotional opportunities at your job (likely with pay raises attached). Peruse the audition boards and check in with old conductors. There may be a chair in an orchestra available to you or a school in need of a hotshot flute teacher. Follow all your leads.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income. Mercury will ask you to do some serious networking when it comes to your job. This is a great time to take all the auditions. Spruce up your CV and send it out to potential new gigs. Practice your excerpts so you are ready to go when the invites roll in. Rehearse your best answers to the question, “Why do you want this job?”
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 2nd house of income. The spotlight will shift squarely onto your career, if it hasn’t already. Avoid pursing new opportunities simply for the sake of advancement. Make sure that any new job you take speaks either directly or indirectly to your passions and strengths. There is a world full of jobs but there is only one you.
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. The New Moon indicates that you will be offered a new job opportunity. This is reflective of the hard work you have put in to finding greener pastures in your career this month. Sign on the dotted line and announce your super awesome new chair placement in a great ensemble on your social media outlets. Shine so bright your haters are blinded by your light!
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 6th house of work and health routines, joining Uranus. Is your schedule totally and utterly out of control? Are too many people asking you to sub for them in ensembles, attend various recitals, page-turn for performances, or participate in large group meetings? It’s time to say no. It will be difficult – Sags like to make sure others are happy. Setting boundaries in your schedule often means letting others down. This Lunar Eclipse is asking you to eliminate tasks that do not serve you to make space for passion projects and self-care.
November 16th – Venus moves into your 1st house of identity. Venus will help you spoil yourself. It’s about time! Do you have a flashy new flute accessory that you’ve been eying? Considering adding a bejeweled crown or bejeweling your entire headjoint (yes – it’s possible!)? If you’ve got the cash, treat yourself to something shiny and new. Book it, move all your other obligations to another date, and let your friends and family know you are not available. Do you need more beefy parts in orchestra? Have a chat with your conductor. What do you need to do to get to that next level?
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 1st house of identity. Your attention will shift onto your most important wants and needs when the Sun moves signs. You are in the spotlight, Sag. This is the best time to host a recital, even if it is an impromptu performance at shopping center or an Instagram Live session that appears out of the blue. Share your flute playing gifts with anyone who will listen!
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. You have been doing a lot of soul searching this month. You’ve eliminated the wasteful noise from your schedule, asked for what you want, and pursed what you need. The Universe is about to give you some of the things posted on your vision board. Accept whatever flows to you at the end of the month. You’ve earned it!

November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy joining Uranus. A creative project you have been working on may be in a state of chaos. Are there one too many cooks in the kitchen giving you advice? Are you stuck compromising your vision to make somebody else happy or to get your final masterpiece out the door by a certain date? Take a step back and look at the larger picture. Are there any ways to simplify your ideas or highlight the most groundbreaking or creative concepts in a more concise way? Edit and reframe.
November 16th – Venus moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Venus will help you find fun ways to enjoy practicing again. Have you been in a practice rut lately? Practice some of your old favorites this month! Record yourself performing these works and post to your YouTube channel. Share these videos with your students. If it makes you smile, add it to your practice routine.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Do you have a flute blog, Instagram, or YouTube channel? This is a great time to post about some of your best kept practice secrets. How do you organize your routine? Do you change it up every day or stick to a basic structure? How do you address sight reading and improvisation? Do you use piano accompaniment software? Share your thoughts with a wider audience!
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Your focus will be square on the practice room when the Sun moves signs. Practice anything and everything. Start sight-reading items for your next recital. Check out the super cool new book on beatboxing or electronics. Invest in that crazy new piece you heard your flute idol performing at a recent concert. If it resonates with you – great! Program it! If not, revisit at another time.
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. You may be asked to perform on a recital by one of your colleagues or even by a conductor looking to program a flute concerto on their next concert. Congrats! Time to roll up those fierce Capricorn sleeves and get to work. Bracket the parts that will need the most work? Study the score – what is happening in the orchestra part? Come up with a breathing plan that will work on performance day.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 4th house of home and family, joining Uranus. Something in your home studio is just not working for your anymore. Are you trying to teach lessons out of your house when there is simply too much chaos from your family members or pets? Do you have any options to move your practice to an off-site location, perhaps at a local music store or shared office space? Do you have a friend willing to let you use a spare bedroom in a less busy house? What will make the most sense for you and your students moving forward?
November 16th – Venus moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. Venus will help you be quite popular in your performing ensembles. It is likely that you will be in the spotlight with an important solo passage or by performing on a non-standard instrument (alto or contrabass anyone?). Soak in that spotlight and connect with other ensemble members performing equally important passages.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. This is a great time to host a studio masterclass. Invite your students to perform a piece they are working on. Ask for comments and questions from other students. There is a lot that we can learn from each other and sometimes our students are our greatest teachers. Make them feel safe and comfortable sharing ideas about flute playing with one another. We are all learning this craft together!
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. Your rehearsal schedule will be bursting out of control when the Sun moves into the 11th house. So many holiday performances around the corner! Remember to take breaks and not schedule yourself too thin. If there are other commitments that can be put on hold around this time, reschedule them. You will need some serious work-life balance skills during this time. Make it all work by focusing on one thing at a time.
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may be asked to audition to yet another group around the end of the month. This will be a fabulous opportunity and an audition that you will absolutely want to nail. Start brushing your excerpts up now. Work tirelessly on fundamentals so your tone remains vibrant and your articulation light and fluffy. You’ve got this!
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 3rd house of communications, joining Uranus. If you have been working on a book or article, this Lunar Eclipse will ask you to do some serious proofreading. There may be something that you are missing. Review your musical examples carefully – Have you analyzed everything correctly? Are you missing a crucial harmonic detail or a motive buried in the texture? Do all your points connect back to a larger idea or theme? Are your chapters accessible to a wide audience of flutists or are you a bit too wordy? Sometimes less is more.
November 16th – Venus moves into your 10th house of career goals. Venus wants to make sure you are in a job that makes you happy. Most of us spend at least 1/4 of our lives at our jobs. If the meaning of life is simply to be happy, having quarter of that time invested in something you do not really enjoy (at best) or severely dislike (at worst) is a waste. Take stock of your career as it stands now and your true career goals. Are you on a path towards happiness or grey, boring gloom? Take a different path.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals. This is a great time to meet with a career advisor. Venus may have pointed out a few bleak truths when it comes to your job. Use this time to write out all your short and long-term career goals. Make sure these goals are things that genuinely inspire you and not just convenient means to financial stability. Financial stability may sound good on paper but if the cost is your heart, soul, and livelihood, it is not worth it.

Now that you have analyzed your career plans to death, you are now in a position to reimagine everything. Start over if you are unhappy with your current reality! What skills do you need to develop to move toward the career of your dreams? What connections do you need to make? What jobs do you need to apply to?
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. The Universe is listening to your wishes for a better future. You may find yourself with a new job offer around the time of this New Moon. Take it! This venture will put you on the right path to achieving what you truly want in your career. Perhaps it is an audition invitation to a great orchestra or an offer to teach at a really great local institution. Follow this nudge from the New Moon!
Aries (March 21-April 19)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 2nd house of income, joining Uranus. You may be calling it quits in your job around this Lunar Eclipse. Perhaps you have been offered a fabulous opportunity elsewhere. Have you recently won an audition in a competing ensemble? Or landed a fabulous day job in a really meaningful organization? Congrats! The difficult part will be to walk away from your current position. Try to come up with a reasonable transition plan and avoid burning any bridges on your way to bigger and better things.

Where would you most like to go during this time of the year? Are you missing sandy summery beaches? Plan a Hawaiian escape in January! Need to see some great shows? Hit up New York or Las Vegas.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. You may be interested in expanding your horizons when Mercury moves into your house of higher education. Studying the French Flute School? How is your French? Could you use a course on basic French pronunciation and vocabulary. Sign up for a class at your local community college.
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. Your head will be back in the clouds dreaming of your next vacation. Start making a realistic budget for your adventure. What other sight-seeing opportunities can you add to your itinerary? Are there orchestra concerts to attend? Teachers in the vicinity who you might take a lesson with during your vacay? Can you integrate your flute life with your relaxation time?
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. This New Moon will bring a new learning opportunity into your life. Is there a fabulous new workshop on Baroque composers coming to your area? Is there a masterclass being held either online or in person by one of your favorite flutists? Sign up!! You will learn a lot from this course that can be applied to your own fluting playing.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 1st house of identity, joining Uranus. You will be doing a lot of soul searching at the beginning of the month, Taurus. Something in your flute life is just not working out for you. Are you sick of performing in an orchestra? Do you feel most alive as a teacher? Do you have a certain flute playing niche that does not get the airtime it deserves? Are you trying to do too many other things for too many other people? Time to reprioritize. What activities mean the most to you?
November 16th – Venus moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. You’ve got a large purchase on your mind (perhaps a new flute?) and no plan on how to pay for it. Still, Venus wants you to start window shopping. What does your dream flute look like? What are your favorite add-ons? What is your preferred manufacturer? Start shopping and possibly scheduling flute trials.
November 17th – Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. This is a great time to have a conversation with your financial advisor or local banking institution about loans or savings plans available to you to make purchasing your dream flute a possibility in the near future. What are your options? What is your current budget? How much will you need to save each month to buy your flute by this time next year?
November 22nd - The Sun moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. The Sun is motivating you to start putting your savings plans into effect. You are motivated to purchase a new instrument and ready to make whatever sacrifices you need to make it happen. Do you need to cancel cable or curb your Starbucks addiction? Test out your savings plans and start stashing away your extra cash.
November 23rd – A New Moon appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. Discuss your financial plans with your family and friends and you might find yourself with a gift from a generous relative or benefactor. Your loved ones want to help you make your purchase sooner rather than later. This is a wonderful gift from the Universe. Gemini (May 21-June 20)
November 8th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities, joining Uranus. This Lunar Eclipse will demand that you completely overhaul your practice routine. You have hit a rut. Your routine is possibly doing more harm than good. Are you practicing all the same material in all the same ways and find yourself not really growing as an artist? Change it up! Table the Taffanel and invest in a completely new scale book. Check out a violin transcription or two. Pick up a crazy new piece with multiphonics or electro-acoustical gymnastics. Add some improvisation to your routine (bonus points for recording your improvisations and posting them on social media). Think outside the practice box!

What challenges are they facing in the studio? Are there any opportunities for collaborative masterclasses? Are there any great concerts coming up for your colleagues? Compare notes!

Answer a few questions on flute forums and share some of your favorite upcoming events on local flute community pages. Post a few interesting blogs on your website to open a dialog on flute subjects that we don’t talk about enough. Connect with flutists that you admire, no matter how intimidating it may be.

Are there any great collaborative projects with other musicians running through your head? Start planning out what you will need to get these projects off the ground. Reach out to your colleagues to gage their interest and availability. What awesomeness can you create if you pool your creative talents?

Did you meet someone recently at a workshop or recital whose work really resonates with you? Set up an information interview. How did they get their start in this business? Perhaps the rehearsals no longer work with your schedule. Or you may have simply outgrown the group and are searching for something new. Do you have a wonderful, oddball, perhaps a little insane idea for a new type of composition or flute related project? What’s stopping you from bringing it to life? Brainstorm your idea. What resources do you need? Whose help do you need? How much time do you need to get your project off the ground?

Now that you have had an opportunity to brainstorm, start making those important connections to bring your amazing project to life. If you are composing a new piece, send your work to a trusted fellow composer or flutist. They may have some great ideas for new directions to take your work or clever solutions to the trickier bits.

Spend some quality time with your work around this time. Keep a capture notebook with you at all times in case a really great idea related to your project strikes out of nowhere. Something about this trip just didn’t feel right. If it was connected to a performance, or series of performances, you may have not felt ready to take the stage. Try not to panic or get too down on yourself. Instead, plan to reschedule your trip for a time when you have adequate time to prepare as best as possible.
