Yubeen Kim’s Triumphant Tenure Appointment as San Francisco Symphony’s Principal Flute

In an exhilarating announcement that has the classical music world abuzz, Yubeen Kim has been appointed as the Principal Flute of the San Francisco Symphony. This significant milestone in Kim's career was revealed on June 26, during the final weeks of the Symphony's 23/24 season, which featured among others, the grandiose Mahler Symphony No. 3, as well as the iconic Beethoven 5th Symphony and the riveting, Shostakovich 5th Symphony.

Yubeen Kim's journey to this prestigious position has been nothing short of extraordinary. Prior to this, he served as the Principal Flute at the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, a role in which he garnered immense acclaim. His exceptional talent is well-documented, with accolades that include winning 1st Prize at the 2022 ARD International Music Competition, 1st Prize at the 2015 Prague Spring International Music Competition, and 2nd Prize at the 2014 Geneva International Music Competition.

Kim began his appointment with the San Francisco Symphony in January 2024, marking the start of an intense and rewarding probation year. The Symphony's rigorous programming provided him with ample opportunity to showcase his virtuosity, starting with his debut performance featuring Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. These concerts, rich with intricate flute solos, set the stage for Kim's remarkable journey with the orchestra.

Reflecting on his first months with the San Francisco Symphony, Kim expresses immense gratitude for the warm welcome he received. "I am so glad to be part of this orchestra," he shares. "Everyone from the orchestra is welcoming me with such nice words, and it makes me so happy and gives me confidence."

The decision to grant Kim tenure was a swift and clear one for Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, who remarked that it was one of the easiest and fastest decisions in his over 40-year career. This endorsement, coupled with the unwavering support of his woodwind colleagues, has fortified Kim's confidence and stability within the orchestra.

As Kim looks forward to the future, he eagerly anticipates the many musical adventures that lie ahead. His commitment to the San Francisco Symphony is unwavering, and he is enthusiastic about the beautiful stages and performances to come. Beyond his orchestral duties, Kim is also set to join the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) in the Fall of 2024. "I am so grateful to be part of this great conservatory and so excited to work with the flute studio," he says, looking forward to the opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of flutists.
