Ruth Andreina Pereira Medina Artist Interview
The Venezuelan flutist and piccolist, has won between 2017-2021 seven international flute and chamber music competitions in Europe, Latin America and the United States. She was part of several German orchestras, such as the Frankfurt Opera, Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne and is currently one of the Piccolo-Soloists of the Berlin Opera "Deutsche Oper Berlin". Ruth has given master classes in Ecuador, France, Mexico (The Orchestra of the Americas / OA Academy) and Venezuela. She created her own summer course founded in Strasbourg, France, for students of all levels. This July 2022, she will teach at the Summer Music Academy Vodice in Croatia.
Can you tell us 5 highlights of your career?
- - I think the first one that comes to my mind is one moment I lived in 2009, when I was 17 years old and I was still living in Venezuela.
For the very first time I went to compete outside my continent, in Spain, and that year I won the "Young Promise" award at the V International Flute - - Competition in Estepona.
A month later, I would live my second highlight moment when, in my hometown, when I performed the André Jolivet's Concerto for flute with the - - Lara Symphony Orchestra.
When I was already living in France, in 2016, my family accompanied me in what would be my Bachelor degree recital, a very special memory, because it was the last time my mother heard me playing live. I obtained the maximum qualification, the mention: “Very Good” and my double undergraduate degree in musicology, art & letters and performing - - musician.
For my forth one in 2018 when I won the First Prize in the Netherlands at the “International Flute Dutch Competition". It was my First Prize in big a - - competition!
Between 2018 - 2021, after many, many auditions, I have been part of several European professional orchestras, where I have had the opportunity to learn the profession of the orchestral musician. Today, after the trial year, I have become a permanent Piccolo-Soloist of the Berlin Opera.
How about 3 pivotal moments that were essential to creating the artist that you've become?
My life changed many times with various events in both my professional and personal life. I can say that today everything I have achieved, has been possible thanks to the support of hundreds of people, among them, my unconditional parents, who have been my handkerchief of tears in good and bad times. My siblings, my teachers and friends have made me a happy and grateful person.
- I think that if I have to reduce so many events, in only 3, I would name : Winning at the age of 15 an audition for the national youth orchestra, as a piccolo player (Orquesta Nacional Infantil de Venezuela 2007), under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel. This one was my first small achievement in the great orchestral world.
- When I wanted to change direction to another profession, I had a beautiful conversation with my mother and she told me: "I would not like you to give up your dreams. If you want to be an orchestral musician, put your all into it and do it!"
- Winning the audition for the permanent position of Piccolo Solo at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, it was a moment of effort, exercises, sweat and tears. It was a very special moment that I carry treasured in my heart.
What do you like best about performing?
What I like most about being on stage as a soloist, or as part of a chamber music ensemble or part of an orchestra or even in the pit of an opera house orchestra, is to feel all that tension, to maintain the concentration that is required to achieve respect and interpret the text of the composer as best as possible. All this energy also transmits diverse emotions to the audience through the sound of the ensemble of instruments. The back stages, the preparation, the rehearsals, the daily practicing, is also one of my favorite parts of giving concerts.
CD releases?
Ever since I spoke a few years ago with my old teacher Manuel Rojas, it has been a constant idea that I have to develop. It would be a great project that I envision in the next few years.
What does your schedule look like for the next 6 months?
I will be playing as a guest for concerts with the Dresden Philharmonie and Staatskapelle Dresden. I will be giving some lectures and master classes online and in person in Latinamerica and Europe. Besides all this, we are finishing an amazing season with the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Berlin Opera House) and the next season will starts in August 2022.
What are your personal goals? Professionally?
As a person and a flutist/piccolist, I am incredibly eager to keep learning and to give concerts especially as a soloist and with chamber music ensembles. I love to give benefit concerts! In Paris, during my student days, I was part of a cultural association to play in retirement homes and in special needs education schools. Here in Berlin I would like to develop ideas around this theme, so that art can continue to bring smiles and emotions to people who may find it difficult to travel to concert halls.
I would love to continue shooting music videos, because I learn a lot from them. The search for perfection in every detail. The respect for the composer's work. There are so many ideas and so much content... I have a lot of respect for the piccolo, it is a wonderful instrument that deserves that I will soon do some projects with it. Perhaps the premiere of some works composed for this little unknown but beautiful soloist and orchestral instrument.
What inspires you the most in life?
My parents. They are my inspiration.
What has been your greatest challenge?
Surviving without having my mother physically by my side.
Who were your musical mentors ? and what did you learn from them?
Fortunately I have countless of people who I can now and always thank, because they have made my musical and personal journey an extremely interesting one.
From my parents, I have learned perseverance.
Roselis Salom and José Briceño, two family friends whom I admire. From them I have learned the tenacity it takes to face problems. This is fundamental in the life of any musician.
From Víctor Rojas, Venezuelan flutist, I learned to believe in myself, to explore that within me there is a strength that would allow me to achieve everything I set my mind to.
From Manuel Rojas, I learned that Venezuelan and even Latin American popular music must be interpreted with respect and technical neatness, details that we take care of very carefully in the so-called 'classical' academic music.
Shigeroni Kudo was the first person in Europe who believed in me, I was only 18 years old, I was in Paris with a suitcase (with all the memories of my native country), with my teacher’s flute, an excited heart and a brain eager to learn.
To Mario Caroli, first of all I thank him for his patience and his affection.
From Sandrine Tilly, I learned love for the flute, love when I play, love for what I do.
From Stéphane Réty, I learned self-control and how important it is to prepare mentally for competitions, auditions and concerts, to respect yourself and to be as true to your values as possible.
From Rozália Szabó, I have learn that the most important thing when playing is honesty with oneself, patience in searching for the sound and pronouncing each note written on the score. She is undoubtedly one of the flutists who has inspired my career the most.
From my only mentor on the piccolo, I learned and continue to learn every day to be myself both in my personal life and with the instrument. Dóra Varga to me is an example of a human being, humility, confidence and a deep love for the art.
Today is the moment to say thank you to all the teachers I have had the opportunity to meet on my way, thanks you for so much love and thank you for believing in me. There have been hundreds of them, those with whom I have had the opportunity to play in concert, those with whom I have done master classes and those with whom I had the opportunity to study for a couple of months.
I would like to add that all the doors that were closed during my studies, the university entrance exams that I could not achieve, the auditions that I could not win, made me without a doubt, stronger!
Can you give us 5 quirky, secret, fun, (don't think too much about this) hobbies or passions?
- - I love reading Gabriel García Márquez and books about challenges and extreme sports. For example « Un tocard sur le toit du monde » by Nadir Dendoune who climbs the Everest and describes all the way he had to do to achieve it.
- - I love to feel in absolute freedom; I feel this when I am in a forest or in direct contact with the greatness of nature.
- - I love to dance.
- - I like competitions/auditions, I like the journey to prepare for them as much as possible.
- - Laughing with my family and friends is priceless.What 3 things would you offer as advice for a young flutist?
- - To respect oneself, in order to be able to do so with humility towards others.
- - To study tirelessly and conscientiously.

¿Puede decirnos 5 momentos destacados de su carrera?
- Creo que el primero que me viene a la mente es un momento que viví en 2009, cuando tenía 17 años y aún vivía en Venezuela.
Por primera vez fui a competir fuera de mi continente, en Europa, España, y ese año gané el premio "Joven Promesa" en el V Concurso Internacional de Flauta en Estepona.
- Un mes después, viviría mi segundo momento cumbre cuando, en mi ciudad natal, al interpretar el Concierto para flauta de André Jolivet con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Lara.
- Ya viviendo en Francia, en 2016, mi familia me acompañó en lo que sería mi recital de licenciatura, un recuerdo muy especial, pues fue la última vez que mi madre me escuchó tocar en vivo. Obtuve la máxima calificación, la mención: "Muy bien" y mi doble licenciatura en musicología, arte y letras e interpretación musical.
- Para la cuarta en 2018 cuando gané el Primer Premio en Holanda en el "Concurso Internacional de Flauta Holandesa". Fue mi Primer Premio en una ¡gran competencia!
- Entre 2018 - 2021, después de muchas, muchas audiciones, he sido parte de varias orquestas profesionales europeas, donde he tenido la oportunidad de aprender paso a paso la profesión del músico de orquesta. Hoy, después del año de prueba, estoy muy agradecida en ocupar oficialmente el puesto de Piccolo-Solista permanente de la Ópera de Berlín.
3 momentos cruciales que fueron esenciales para crear el artista en el que se ha convertido
Mi vida cambió muchas veces con varios acontecimientos tanto en mi vida profesional como en la personal. Puedo decir que hoy día todo lo que he logrado, ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de cientos de personas, entre ellas, mis incondicionales padres, quienes han sido mi pañuelo de lágrimas en los buenos y malos momentos. Mi familia, profesores y amigos han hecho de mí una persona feliz y agradecida.
Pienso que si tengo que reducir tantos acontecimientos, en solo 3, nombraría :
- - Ganar a los 15 años de edad una audición para la selección nacional deorquesta de jóvenes, como piccolista (Orquesta Nacional Infantil de Venezuela), bajo la dirección de Gustavo Dudamel, fue mi primer pequeño logro en el gran mundo orquestal.
- - Cuando quise cambiar de rumbo a otra profesión, tuve una hermosa conversación con mi madre y me dijo : « no me gustaría que abandones tu sueño. Si quieres ser músico de orquesta ¡pon todo tu empeño y hazlo! »
- - Ganar la audición para el puesto fijo de Piccolo-Solista en la Deutsche Oper Berlín, fue un momento de esfuerzo, ejercicios, sudor y lágrimas. Fue un momento muy especial que llevo atesorado en mi corazón.¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de dar conciertos?Lo que más me gusta de estar en escena como solista, o como parte de un ensamble de música de cámara o parte de una orquesta o incluso en el foso de una orquesta de ópera, es sentir toda esa tensión para mantener la concentración, que se requiere para lograr respetar e interpretar el texto del compositor lo mejor posible. Toda esta energía con la cual también se transmiten emociones diversas al público, a través del sonido del ensamble. El detrás de cámara, la preparación, los ensayos, el estudio personal, es también una de mis partes preferidas de dar conciertos.¿Lanzamientos de CD?Desde que hablé hace unos años atrás con mi antiguo maestro Manuel Rojas, ha sido una idea constante que he estado por desarrollar. Sería un gran proyecto que visualizo en las próximas temporadas.¿Cuál es su agenda para los próximos 6 meses?
Estaré tocando como invitada para conciertos junto a orquestas como : Dresden Philharmonie, Staatskapelle Dresden. Estaré dando algunas charlas y master clases online y presenciales en Latinoamérica y Europa. Entre ellas, una que se llevará acabo del 4-9 de Julio 2022 en Vodice, Croacia. Además de todo esto, estamos terminando una temporada increíble con la Deutsche Oper Berlin y la próxima, comienza en Agosto 2022.
¿Cuáles son sus objetivos personales? ¿Profesionalmente?
Como persona y flautista/piccolista, tengo unas ganas increíbles de seguir aprendiendo y de dar conciertos sobre todo como solista y con ensambles de música de cámara. Me encanta dar conciertos benéficos, en París, durante mi época de estudiante, formé parte de una asociación cultural para tocar en residencias de ancianos y en escuelas de educación especial. Aquí, en Berlín, me gustaría desarrollar ideas en torno a este tema, para que el arte pueda seguir llevando sonrisas y emociones a las personas que pueden tener dificultades para desplazarse a las salas de concierto.
Me encantaría seguir grabando videos musicales, porque de ellos aprendo mucho. La búsqueda de la perfección de cada detalle, el respeto a la obra del compositor, son tantas ideas y tanto contenido... Le tengo mucho respeto al piccolo, es un instrumento maravilloso que merece que pronto haga proyectos junto a él; quizá el estreno de algunas obras compuestas para este poco conocido pero hermoso instrumentos solista y orquestal.
¿Qué es lo que más le inspira en la vida?
Mis padres. Ellos son mi inspiración.
¿Cuál ha sido su mayor reto?
Sobrevivir sin tener a mi madre físicamente a mi lado.
¿Quiénes fueron tus mentores musicales? y ¿qué aprendiste de ellos?
Afortunadamente tengo cientos de personas a quienes hoy y siempre puedo agradecer, porque han hecho de mi camino musical y personal uno extremadamente interesante.
De mis padres, ha aprendido la perseverancia.
Roselis Salom y José Briceño, dos amigos de la familia a quienes admiro. De ellos he aprendido la tenacidad que se necesita para darle la cara a los problemas. Esto es fundamental en la vida de cualquier músico.
De Víctor Rojas, flautista venezolano, aprendí a creer en mí, a explorar que dentro de mí había una fuerza que iba a permitirme alcanzar todo lo que me propusiera.
De Manuel Rojas aprendí que la música popular venezolana e incluso latinoamericana debe ser interpretada con respeto y pulcritud técnica, detalles que cuidamos muy a la lupa en la música académica dicha ‘clásica’. Shigeroni Kudo fue la primera persona en Europa que creyó en mí, yo sólo tenía 18 años de edad. Estaba en París con una maleta (con todos los recuerdos de mi país nata), con la flauta de mi profesor, con un corazón emocionado y un cerebro ansioso por aprender.
A Mario Caroli, ante todo agradezco su paciencia, su cariño y su honestidad. De él aprendí la pasión por esforzarse y por escalar cada vez más alto.
De Sandrine Tilly, aprendí amor por la flauta, cuando estudio, cuando toco : amor por lo que hago.
De Stéphane Réty, aprendí el autocontrol y lo importante que es prepararse mentalmente para las competencias, audiciones y conciertos, respetarse así mismo y ser lo más fiel a sus valores.
De Rozália Szabó aprendí a que lo más importante a la hora de tocar, es la honestidad consigo mismo, la paciencia de buscar el sonido y de pronunciar cada nota escrita en la partitura. Ella es sin duda una de las flautistas que más ha inspirado mi carrera.
De mi única mentora en el piccolo, aprendí y sigo aprendiendo cada día a ser yo misma tanto en mi vida personal como con el instrumento. Dóra Varga para mí es un ejemplo de ser humano, de humildad, de seguridad y de un profundo amor por el arte.
A todos los maestros que he tenido la oportunidad de encontrar en mi camino, hoy es el momento de decirles ¡gracias por tanto amor, gracias por creer en mí!, han sido cientos de ellos, con quienes he tenido la oportunidad de tocar en concierto, con quienes he hecho clases magistrales, con quienes tuve la oportunidad de estudiar un par de meses.
Me gustaría añadir que todas las puertas que se cerraron durante mis estudios, los exámenes de acceso a la universidad que no pude realizar, las audiciones de orquesta que no pude ganar, me hicieron sin duda más fuerte.
¿Puede decirnos 5 aficiones o pasiones extravagantes, secretas, divertidas (no lo piense mucho)?
- - Me apasiona leer Gabriel García Márquez y libros de desafíos y deportes extremos. Por ejemplo, el libro « Un tocard sur le toit du monde » de Nadir Dendoune, quien escala el Everest y describe todo el camino que tuvo que hacer para lograrlo.
- - Amo sentirme en libertad absoluta; esto lo siento cuando estoy en un bosque o en contacto directo con la grandeza de la naturaleza.
- - Me encanta bailar.
- - Me gustan las competencias/audiciones, me gusta el camino que hay quehacer para prepararlas lo mejor posible.
- - Reír con mi familia y amigos, no tiene precio.¿Qué 3 cosas ofrecería como consejo para un joven flautista?
- - respetarse así mismo, para poder hacerlo con humildad hacia los demás.
- - estudiar incansablemente con conciencia.
