DR. G’s FLUTE HOROSCOPES February 2023
Happy February! Love is in the air (and in the heavens). This month we see partnerships flourish in the Zodiac as forces unite to amplify ideas and circumstances already in motion. Mercury joins the Sun and Saturn mid-month to help you give a voice to the lessons you are learning. Write about new insights you have or talk them through with trusted colleagues. The Sun will also partner with Venus and Neptune, encouraging you to take dreams more seriously. Can you make them into a reality? Finally, the month ends with Venus joining Jupiter. Love and luck unite! Be careful not to overspend. Jupiter loves the finer things in life, and Venus loves to shop. Treat yourself within reason.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18), HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships. You may be dealing with a sticky situation involving a colleague, conductor, or student. Not seeing eye-to-eye with a fellow music-maker? Battling with different learning or work styles? This Full Moon will ask you to take a step back and problem-solve. Where can compromises be made? Invite this person out for coffee to hash things out. If there are no solutions, you might need to seek other opportunities elsewhere that do not involve this person.
February 11th – Mercury joins the Sun and Saturn in your 1st house of identity. The Sun and Saturn have been teaching you a lot of lessons lately about the type of flutist you really want to be. Perhaps you have been in a rut and need to change things up in order to move in a new direction. When Mercury moves signs, you will finally have the green light to discuss your plans with others. This may be as simple as discussing your ambitions on your flute blog or as involved as meeting with a career counselor to discuss new jobs in new places that hold new possibilities.
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 2nd house of income. Time to consider new horizons when it comes to your job. Hit the job and audition boards. What opportunities are available both locally and not-so-locally? What are the job requirements? Are there any postings that speak to you? Take the first step and apply!
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. A new job opportunity may come your way thanks to this New Moon. A job you have recently applied to may be yours or you may be invited to audition in your dream orchestra. Go for it! The Universe is encouraging you to expand your career horizons.
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 3rd house of communication. Write about flute topics that interest you when Venus and Jupiter join forces. This may be on your flute blog, or you may even begin drafting the opening chapters of a book. Do you have a really unique take on a certain aspect of flute playing or about a particular composer? Start writing!
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. You may find yourself too busy with too many responsibilities that do not really add much value to your work or life. Time to re-delegate the tasks that drain you to others who might value them more. Clear your schedule Marie Condo style – Ask yourself, “Does this hour-long meeting bring me joy or enhance my career?” If the answer is no, axe it! Instead, fill your time with more students or valuable practice time.
February 11th – Mercury joins the Sun and Saturn in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. The Sun and Saturn may have taught you some hard lessons about your practice routine recently. Mercury will ask you to share some of your lessons with others. Do you have a flute blog yet? This is a great time to set one up! Blog about some of your favorite practice techniques. What works for you? What do you find challenging? How do you track your time? Does your routine look the same each day?
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 1st house of identity. This is a great time to put together a vision board. If you could be any kind of flutist in the world, what would that look like? What type of flute would you play on? Which orchestras would you perform in? Would you be a soloist? Or would you devote your time to teaching? The Sun wants you to dream big!
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. The Universe may present you with a new opportunity at the beginning of the month to pursue something incredible – Perhaps even something tied to your vision board. This may be an exciting new job prospect, audition opportunity, or a good deal on the flute of your dreams. Follow the cues from the Universe on this one and go for something great, even if you think it might be realistically out of your reach.
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 2nd house of income. Venus will help you make some serious cash at work at the end of the month. Perhaps you will be offered a promotion or attract a new crop of students to your studio. Be careful not to spend it all in one place – Venus and Jupiter like to shop recklessly when they pair up. Put most of your extra income into a savings account for now but be sure to treat yourself with a fabulous new piece of music or flute accessory as a reward.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Working on a creative project, by any chance, Aries? Trying to compose a fabulous new piece of flute music or create a really unique lecturer recital on your favorite composer? You might have hit a snag. Take a step back around the time of this Full Moon and reevaluate. You may have accidentally created a much larger project than originally envisioned. Where can you streamline? Can you remove an extra movement or abbreviate longer melodic sections? You may need to adopt the motto, “less is more.”
February 11th – Mercury joins the Sun and Saturn in your 11th house of groups and communities. You have likely spent a lot of time in orchestra rehearsals lately. When Mercury moves signs, this is a great time to schedule smaller group sectionals. Separate yourselves from the craziness of the rest of the ensemble and work on those tricky technical bits together. Hash out impossible intonation in the high register and agree on tempo changes as a team. We are all better when we work together!
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. The Sun will send you into the practice room when it moves signs. This is a great time to practice literally all of the things! The good news is that Venus will help make your playing beautiful while Neptune will help you find new inspiration in mundane exercises (such as scales and flexibility studies). Listen to your instincts – If you just aren’t jiving with a piece, let it go. If a melody speaks to you, play it loud and proud!
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. The New Moon will help inspire you to start working on new repertoire for your next recital. This may be easier than you think! Have you heard a piece at a recent convention or festival that you found interesting? Is there a piece you’ve always wanted to learn but never had the guts to try? Give it a go! What sounds difficult may just be a bunch of scales and arpeggios stacked on top of each other.
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 1st house of identity. Venus and Jupiter will encourage a bit of retail therapy. Treat yourself! Do you need a fabulous new concert black outfit? Invest in a showstopper! Is your flute gear on the boring side? Drop some cash on a colorful new flute bag or colorful music stand. Need some bling on your instrument? Look into bejeweled crowns or flashy temporary flute sleeves.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. You may need to have a family meeting around the time of this Full Moon. Perhaps you have a really intense Spring concert season and will need to juggle schedules to make sure your conflicting events are all lined up properly. Compromise where possible.
February 11th – Mercury joins the Sun and Saturn in your 10th house of career goals. You may be seriously reconsidering your career goals at the beginning of the month. Mercury will help you discuss some of your thoughts with a trusted career advisor or mentor. This is also a great time to talk shop with a professional flutist who may already have the career of your dreams. How did they get there? What experiences and skills do they have that make them ideal for the position they are in? What advice do they have for you as you make your way through your flute career?
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 11th house of groups and communities. This is a great time to create a new chamber group or audition for a local flute choir. The Sun wants you to do something fun and valuable with your time while making important musical connections with others.
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may be auditioning for opportunities in local orchestras around the time of this New Moon. Make sure to brush up on your orchestral excerpts in case an important opportunity (or call back) arises out of nowhere. The Universe is about to bring you an important new position in an awesome group. Say yes to any invitations that come your way at the end of the month.
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Venus will ask you to practice all the things that make you happy. Boring scales? Nope – canceled! Find new ways to approach scales that are interesting and entertaining. Skip the overwhelming etudes that make you want to toss your music stand out the window. Play fantastic virtuosic repertoire that makes you sound fierce and beautiful melodies that bring tears to your eyes. Make practicing fun again!

February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. Working on a book or article about flutists and/or flute playing? This Full Moon may lead to some writer’s block. Do you instead need more explanation on more abstract ideas?

Perhaps you have even started to compile a budget and itinerary. This may be in connection with a summer masterclass or an exciting concert series in a beautiful location. Mercury will encourage you to book those tickets and solidify your travel plans. If it is a masterclass you are dreaming of, send in those audition recording links ASAP. The worst they can do is say no.
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 10th house of career goals. Venus and Neptune have been asking you to think about your ideal flute life. What do you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to be a soloist or performing with a great orchestra? Do you want to have a studio full of happy and talented students? When the Sun moves into your 10th house, you will be making those first steps towards a new career. Apply to the jobs. Take the auditions. Be open to the new possibilities.
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. You may receive an invitation to audition or interview for a really great new job opportunity. Brush up on your orchestral excerpts and start crafting some great responses to some of the standard interview questions (ex. Why do you want this position? What makes you the perfect fit for the role?).
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 11th house of groups and communities. Go ahead and sign up for that community orchestra gig! It may not be that prestigious of a group and the music may not be challenging, but the connections you make here will be very valuable. What instruments will the work be scored for? Think outside the box!
February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Venus wants you to not take yourself so seriously. This will require removing things from your schedule that usually bring your stinger out or that utterly drain you into boredom and cynicism. Instead fill your time with the fun stuff! February 5th – A Full Moon appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. A trip you had been planning may be postponed or even canceled around the time of this Full Moon. February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. You may be looking at new houses or apartments at the end of the month. Are you (and your family) tired of the same walls in the same neighborhood of the same town? Do you all really just need a change of scenery? February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Venus will encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to a creative project. This is a great time to do some improvisation. You might improvise a really great melody out of thin air. Can you turn this little tune into a longer piece for flute and piano? Yeah, 2nd chair has taught you many wonderful and valuable lessons about blending and supporting, but you are craving more of the spotlight. You’ve worked hard and are ready for new challenges. Sit down with your conductor and ask them how you can be assigned to more principal parts. Are there any pieces coming up next season that feature 2nd flute solos? If not, you might consider auditioning for principal chairs in other orchestras. Advocate for yourself and go for what you want!
February 18th – The Sun joins Venus and Neptune in your 3rd house of communication. Capricorns are often allergic to poetry but with the Sun, Venus, and Neptune joining forces, this is the very best time to give it a whirl. It doesn’t need to rhyme or be in perfect Iambic pentameter. Just write from your heart. What do you love about music? What do you love about the flute? Express it using symbolism or however your soul wants to say it.
February 20th – A New Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. You may be suddenly inspired to write a blog or an article around the time of this New Moon. February 20th – Venus joins Jupiter in your 4th house of home and family. Reimagine your home teaching and/or practice space at the end of the month. Is there any realistic way to make it bigger? Consider relocating to a larger room at the back of the house if it offers you more peace and productivity.
