Dr. G’s Flute Horoscopes June 2020

by Rachel Taylor Geier

Welcome to June! Summer is almost here and the Universe is welcoming the solstice with not one but TWO eclipses in the month of June. There will be a number of dramatic changes this month in the form of conclusive and important endings and exciting and optimistic beginnings. The effects of an eclipse can last for up to six months. The changes that happen in June will hang around for weeks and perhaps months into the future. To complicate matters further, there is also a Mercury Retrograde in the same house of the Solar Eclipse at the end of the month. While we reconsider the methods of the past, the Solar Eclipse will demand new and immediate action for the future. June is no doubt a month of change. Try to remain flexible and patient but follow your instincts. The Universe will show you the way forward if you pay attention to the signs.

Gemini (May 21-June 20) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 7th house of relationships. You will be making serious changes to some of your most important relationships during this Lunar Eclipse. Not seeing eye-to-eye with your flute teacher? Are you constantly in disagreements with your conductor? Now is a good time to initiate honest chats with these individuals, keeping in mind that the best path forward may be to part ways.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 2nd house income. There will likely be a number of delays and miscommunications at work when Mercury goes retrograde. Try to be very careful with email during this time. Keep your messages to colleagues short and sweet. If you are working on any major work projects (performances, publications, virtual masterclasses), you may need to revise your work several times before it is complete. Do your best to go with the flow.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 2nd house of income. You may find yourself turning into a workaholic when the Sun moves signs. Try not to burn the candle at both ends trying to over-perfect your work. Balance is key to keeping your sanity.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 2nd house of income. A new, and very important, work opportunity will present itself during this eclipse. Have you applied for a promotion? Or an exciting new job? The Universe is on your side and you will likely be receiving some good news! If you are reading this earlier in the month, do what you can to apply to any jobs that may seem just a tiny bit out of reach. You may surprise yourself by the end of June.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Something in your daily schedule will need to change dramatically at the beginning of the month. Are you member of a committee or advisory board that requires more of a time commitment than you realistically have? Are you rehearsing for a performance that will not be ready by the current performance date (and driving yourself crazy trying to cram-practice)? It is totally okay to reschedule. Take a more realistic look at your schedule. What can you change?

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 1st house of identity. You may find yourself wanting to change your life and image in dramatic ways during this Mercury retrograde. Take a step and reevaluate what is most important to you both in general and as a flute player. Are you on the right track? What do you enjoy the most about being a flutist? How can you bring more visibility to your work?

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 1st house of identity. You will be squarely in the spotlight when the Sun moves signs. This is a great time to host a performance or a socially-distant recital. You may even consider hosting a Facebook or Instagram Live stream once a week to perform a few of your favorite solo flute works.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 1st house of identity. You will be inspired to start something new and very exciting at the end of the month. Take a close look at your bucket list (or create a new list). What are your top five most important goals (flute playing or otherwise)? What steps can you take in the next week, month, and six months to get from where you are now to where you would like to be?

Leo (July 23-August 22)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. A creative project you have been working on will either need to change dramatically or be abandoned. Are you trying to record a CD? Are there one or two pieces that you selected that are just not coming together? It is okay to replace these works with other pieces that tie the entire CD together better. Are you concerned about the preplanned CD launch date? Is it too soon? It is okay to move the release date out a bit further than you had planned.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 12th house of behind the scenes activities. Set up camp in the practice room when Mercury goes retrograde, Leo. In true Leo fashion, you may have been a bit overconfident about your excerpts at your last audition (I am a Leo rising and have totally been there!). Take a step back and listen carefully to each excerpt with the full score and a recording. What are you missing? Take each excerpt apart carefully and practice in shorter, slower chunks before putting them back together.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 12th house of behind the scenes activities. You will be living in the practice room when the Sun changes signs. Practice everything! Plan out your next recital program and identity the places in each piece that will need the most attention. Perfect your excerpts and, dare I say, start memorizing some of the more standard ones. Are there any concerto competitions tentatively scheduled for next school year or concert season? Start polishing up that Ibert now!

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 12th house of behind the scenes activities. This is a really good time to learn new repertoire in preparation for future recitals or masterclass performances. Is there a piece that you have always wanted to play but never quite thought it was within your capabilities? Go ahead and give it a try during this eclipse. You might discover that it is much easier than it looks once you break it down.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 4th house of home and family. Something in your home studio environment is seriously not working for you and your family members. How is your current technology setup? Is your computer relatively up to date? Do you have a decent webcam and microphone? Do you have a SmartMusic subscription and do you actually use it? How can you update your studio to work better for you?

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 11th house of groups and communities. You may find yourself in disagreements with members of your orchestra or chamber music ensembles. Be careful when addressing issues in rehearsals because others may not be hearing what you are saying objectively. Take a step back when they are addressing problems. Try not to jump to conclusions or become offended when they point out that your high notes are on the sharp side.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. You may find yourself rehearsing up a storm when the Sun moves signs. It is likely that the Mercury retrograde has brought up some difficulties understanding tricky cues between parts or movements. Something is just not coming together. Try to remain clam yet focused during this time. It will all work out with a little TLC.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. An opportunity to join a new ensemble or create a new chamber group may present itself at the end of the month. This will be an exciting transition for you that will provide new and important challenges in your career. Go for it! Take that audition as it will open very important doors for you.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 3rd house of communication. If you are writing a book or an article, you will likely have to do some serious proofreading around the time of this Lunar Eclipse. Have you veered off from your original message? Do your chapters connect logically to this message? Have you included material that might not need to be included? Have you stumbled upon research that refutes your argument? Address this in your writing.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 10th house of career goals. This is a really good time to reevaluate the direction of your career. What do you really want to do as a flutist? Would you like to teach? Or perform? Or is there something else off the beaten path that you would like to pursue? Brainstorm and come up with a hypothetical action plan that might help get you to your ultimate career goal. Can you add some of these mini-goals into your daily or weekly schedule?

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 10th house of career goals. Your focus will be on your career when the Sun moves signs. Mercury retrograde has probably brought up some serious questions about what you really want to do with your flute playing. The Sun will help you shift gears if necessary. This is a great time to figure out how much energy to devote to various responsibilities in your career.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 10th house of career goals. A new career opportunity will be on the horizon during the time of this Solar Eclipse. You may have recently sent out inquiries about making a shift in your career. You will receive a very unexpected response with an invitation to begin an important collaboration. Follow this lead!

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 2nd house of income. Something at work will need to dramatically change or even end around the time of this Lunar Eclipse. If you are currently working at a job that does not fit your strengths or interests, it is okay to look for something else that is a better fit. Have you ever considered working for yourself? Do you have any great entrepreneurial ideas? Where can you make space in your schedule to purse these interests?

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 9th house of travel and higher education. If you have any travel plans during the Mercury Retrograde, be prepared for delays and cancelations. Make sure to have a backup plan and remain flexible with travel dates. It is okay to bump this trip to some time in the Fall.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. When the Sun moves into your 9th house, you may find yourself considering enrolling in educational programs. You want to learn something new! Pick up a new instrument or research music theory or history courses online.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 9th house of travel and higher education. Although you may not yet be able to travel, the Solar Eclipse at the end of the month may have you looking into travel grants to study abroad. Do you have a really great idea for a research project on Baroque flute history? Or would you like to study historical Boehm flutes in Paris. Put together a research proposal and submit your idea to your favorite funding agency.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 1st house of identity. How much do you know about the Law of Attraction? You may have let negative thoughts creep into your head lately. Use the energy of this Lunar Eclipse to wipe the slate clean. Create a new life for yourself that is based on gratitude and visualize yourself being happy, healthy, and living your best life. Take stock of all of the things that make you happy and all of the things that frustrate or annoy you. How can you change or eliminate the latter?

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 8th house of banking and finance. Be careful with your money during this retrograde. Check your bank balances and any automatic deposits. Anything that has to do with money transfers and banking may go awry when a Mercury retrograde is involved. If you are paying for item online, keep an eye on your account and report suspicious activity ASAP. If you have applied to a loan or credit card program, avoid signing on the dotted line until next month when Mercury goes direct.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 8th house of banking and finance. When the Sun enters this house, you may start researching larger purchases (such as a new flute). Start coming up with a savings plan. How much from each paycheck will you need to put away to purchase that new instrument by the end of the year? Are there any financing programs available to you through instrument manufactures? Do some research.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. You may find yourself a wealthy benefactor who is willing to contribute to your dream of owning a new instrument during this eclipse. Perhaps a generous relative is inspired by your career goals and would like to support you with a financial gift or even a temporary loan. You might even consider setting up a GoFundMe account to raise the funds for your new instrument. Keep an eye out for unique financial opportunities.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 12th house of behind the scenes activities. You have been toiling away in the practice room recently and are about to determine that your practice approach to a certain piece just is not working. Try not to go completely ballistic (I know it is tempting to toss your music stand out of the nearest window in frustration, but do your best to keep it together). Take a step back and reflect on what works and what does more harm than good. Are you mindlessly drilling the same technical passages over and over again? Why not slow them down, take them apart, transpose them, or play them in different meters? Perhaps it is the time of day you are practicing that needs to change, or how often and in what duration. Cram practicing on Sunday nights? Try practicing a little bit each day instead.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 7th house of relationships. Your relationships will be tested during the Mercury retrograde. Be extra cautious in your communications with others during this time. Try to be clear and concise in emails, text messages, and phone conversations. There is a good chance that complicated relationships may be further complicated by petty misunderstandings. Tread lightly.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 7th house of relationships. You will be quite popular when the Sun moves into your house of relationships. Spend some time connecting to old and new flute friends from around the globe. What are they up to? Are there any opportunities for future collaborations? What can you learn from them? What can they learn from you?

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 7th house of relationships. The Solar Eclipse will bring a new friend and important connection into your life. Spend some quality time chatting with this new colleague. You likely have a lot in common and have some great ideas for future projects in your respective fields. Create something new with your combined superpowers!

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 11th house of groups and communities.  Your affiliation with a particular ensemble might be coming to an end around the time of this lunar eclipse. Perhaps you are moving on to bigger and better things! Or you might even be starting a new chamber group of your own. Remember not to burn any bridges if you must say goodbye. There may be opportunities for further collaborations down road.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 6th house daily work and health routines. Your schedule will start to go a bit haywire when Mercury goes retrograde. Make sure that any calendaring software is up to date prior to the retrograde. Mercury retrogrades tend to send technology into unexpected frenzies!  You may find yourself pulled into a number of unplanned rehearsals or asked to sub for groups around your community. Go with the flow.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 6th house daily work and health routines. Although Mercury is still in retrograde, this is still a good time to focus on practical ways to iron out your crazy schedule. Implement a Sunday night ritual to plan out your week ahead. What responsibilities or meetings can you eliminate? What tasks can be delegated to others? Are there any opportunities to remove the “need to” items and replace them with “want to” events?

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 6th house daily work and health routines. Hang on to your hat, Aquarius – You will likely be asked to participate in yet another group and/or committee around the time of this Solar Eclipse. This one, unlike some of the others earlier in the month, will prove to be quite enjoyable and a valuable use of your time. Seize the moment!

Pisces (February 19-March 20) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 10th house of career goals. The Lunar Eclipse will encourage you to take a very critical look at your current and future career goals. Are you on the right track? Have your goals changed?  Are there other career avenues that you are curious to explore? Have you been trained to be a performer but are truly interested in writing or teaching? Are you obsessed with music history and considering pursuing a Ph.D.? Start to research ways to obtain your most important goals.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 5th house of creativity and joy. This is a good time to reflect on the things that make you happy. Is it practicing Bach? If so, how can you add more Bach to your life? Pisces are naturally more in touch with their emotions than many other signs – listen to your heart! The Mercury retrograde will ask you to find new, creative ways to bring more of what you love into your environment and eliminate tasks (or people) that bum you out.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 5th house creativity and joy. This is a great time to have a socially distant picnic with your family and enjoy the changing of the seasons. Better yet, play a few rounds of “Name that Tune,” while playing some of your favorite movie tunes for your family. With all of the seriousness happening around the World at the moment, take this opportunity to lighten the mood.

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 5th house creativity and joy. A new creative project is on the horizon for you around the time of the Solar Eclipse. Have you always wanted to write a piece of music? Pull up some manuscript paper and compose something wonderful! Who cares about the rules for now – Just write something that inspires you. The Universe will be there to help direct your thoughts into the right direction.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 9th house of travel. You may have had super fun travel plans for the summer that will be cancelled or postponed around the time of the Lunar Eclipse. Not to worry! How can you turn your adventure abroad into the best darn staycation ever? The 9th house also points to higher education. Are you considering enrolling into a degree program? A second masters degree in music theory? A certificate in music business? This is a really good time to look into programs that might fit into your current schedule and career timelines.

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 4th house of home and family. There may be a few disagreements and misunderstandings with family members during the Mercury retrograde. Cabin fever anyone? Is your husband’s morning toothbrushing routining grinding your nerves? Are your kids getting really annoyed with endless repetitions of your favorite Mozart concerto or Bach Sonata? Try to have a calm family discussion (over ice cream) and patiently discuss issues, no matter how small.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 4th house of home and family. Spend some time hanging out with your family. Watch a movie together or challenge yourselves to watch the entire Ring Cycle. Sure, they might got bored if they do not follow the story or do not wish to read sub-titles, but there are great opportunities to turn this event into a game (for example, Guess the Leitmotif – winner receives $1 for each correctly identified match).

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 4th house of home and family. The Solar Eclipse may have you considering renovating your home to create a better practice or studio space. If you removed a closet from your home office, would you have enough space for a piano? Could you create a beautiful studio space out of the backyard shed using a bit of insulation, creative decorating, and soundproofing? Think functional yet gorgeous!

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

June 5th – A Lunar Eclipse appears in your 8th house of banking and finance. You may need to refinance a loan or change the automatic payment options on your credit card around the time of the Lunar Eclipse. Something is currently not working in your finances. Have a chat with you local banking institution. What can you change to make paying back any loans easier and more practical with your current level of income?

June 18th – Mercury goes retrograde in your 3rd house of communication. It is never easy when the planet of communication is retrograde in your house of communication. Be prepared for some crossed wires when it comes to emails, voicemails, blog posts, and comments on social media. Others are likely misinterpreting your tone to mean something that you had not intended. Try to keep messages short, sweet, and to the point. Avoid chiming in on social media unless your message is clear and adds to the conversation. Whatever you do, try not to pick a fight during this time. Save the drama for Obama.

June 20th – The Sun moves into your 3rd house of communication. Although Mercury is still in retrograde, this is a great time to start working on any writing projects you may have brewing behind the scenes. Are you writing a book or an article? Roll up your sleeves and start drafting. Do you have a flute blog yet? This is a really good time to work on a few decent posts, perhaps in a series of topics that tie together (works by the same composer, works written at the same time by different composers, the different ways to teach vibrato, etc.).

June 21st – A Solar Eclipse appears in your 3rd house of communication.  You may be inspired to write something new around the time of this Solar Eclipse. Do you have a great idea for an article about technology and teaching? Start brainstorming your ideas into a clear, concise, yet entertaining, article of roughly 1300 words that could easily be published in a trade magazine. Gather your courage and submit your article to an editor at the end of the month. They might just say yes!

Happy June!
