Elisabet is now back in Spain and combines her solo career with teaching as Flute Professor of Centro Superior de Música de Galicia.
Please tell us what made you decide to leave your orchestra in China?
ENGLISH: It was indeed a difficult decision. I was already thinking of it over one year ago, when I realized how complicated it was to continue my solo career combined with my principal flute position in China. Although the Orchestra was generally very understanding, I had to reject many opportunities because of my duties with them. So, at the end of 2019, I decided I would stop after the end of the season (July 2020) and go back to Europe after 4 years of experience in China.
ESPAÑOL: fue sin duda una decisión muy difícil, la medité muchas veces. Ya hace más de un año que empecé a planteármelo, al ver lo complicado que resultaba mantener mi actividad solista junto con mi plaza en la orquesta en China. Aunque la orquesta fue siempre muy comprensiva, tuve que rechazar muchas oportunidades a causa de mis obligaciones. Así pues, a finales del 2019, decidí que dejaría la orquesta al terminar la temporada (Julio 2020) y volvería a Europa tras cuatro años de experiencia en China.
How did you like living in China? What did you learn? Do you speak Mandarin now?
ENG: It was indeed a life experience which changed me a lot both as a musician and as a person. I learnt to play all the symphonic repertoire at a huge speed, performing a different program every week, with different conductors and different approaches. I also learnt to value more all the things I have, it was of course a big cultural change, and made me realize how important family and friends are in our life. My Mandarin is limited as it is a really difficult language, but I can manage to follow a rehearsal and have some basic communication. I love languages and I’ve been studying them for years. I speak fluent English, Italian, French, Spanish, Catalan and a bit of Portuguese and Chinese. Next I would like to learn Russian, but it’s a difficult one!
ES: Fue sin duda una experiencia en la vida que me cambió como músico y como persona. Aprendí a tocar mucho repertorio sinfónico en poco tiempo, tocando un programa distinto cada semana, con distintos directores y distintas formas de trabajar. También aprendí a valorar más todas las cosas que tengo, fue sin duda un gran cambio cultural, y me hizo ver lo importante que son la familia y las amistades en nuestras vidas. Mi mandarín es un poco limitado pues es un idioma muy complicado, pero puedo seguir un ensayo y tener una comunicación básica. Adoro los idiomas y he estudiado unos cuantos. Hablo fluente Inglés, Italiano, Francés, Español, Catalán y un poco de Portugués y Chino. El próximo que me gustaría aprender es Ruso, pero es difícil!
What are you doing now?
ENG: I have to admit this is going to be a busy year. First of all, I'm studying again! I'm doing a Master on Musical Research at Valencia International University, which takes a lot of hours, not only attending online lessons (8 per week) but doing a lot of self research, reading, writing and listening. I was supposed to become journalist but after two years at Communications University I realized my life without music was a huge mistake, so I dropped those studies and changed to Music University. Now is a kind of reconciliation: I'm putting both my passions together, flute and writing through research. I also risked a bit and decided to do this career in one year instead of two (who knows where I will be next year!!!) so this year I need to really work hard in order to present my end of Master Thesis either in June or October next year.
And of course, this combined with my solo concerts, recordings and teaching. There are days I wake up at 6 am and end at 11pm. It's being exhausting but I am good at organizing my schedule in order to cover all the work.
ES: Tengo que reconocer que está siendo un año apretado. En primer lugar, he vuelto a estudiar! Estoy realizando un Máster en Investigación Musical en la Universidad Internacional de Valencia, que me ocupa muchas horas semanales, no solo las clases online (8 a la semana) sino también realizando mucha investigación, leyendo, escribiendo y escuchando mucha música. Se suponía que yo sería periodista, pues empecé la carrera de Comunicación Audiovisual a los 18 años, pero al cabo de dos cursos, vi que sin música mi vida era un error, así que dejé las letras para empezar la carrera de Música. Ahora me siento completa: he reconciliado mis dos pasiones, la flauta y escribir. Me he arriesgado un poco decidiendo completar la carrera en un año en lugar de dos (quién sabe donde estaré el año próximo!!!) así que este año tengo que trabajar mucho para poder presentar mi tesis en Junio o Octubre del año próximo.
Y claro, compaginar el Máster con mis conciertos, grabaciones y la docencia. Hay días que me levanto a las 6 de la mañana y termino a las 11 de la noche. Está siendo agotador pero por suerte soy una persona bien organizada con el estudio y distribuyo bien el trabajo para poder tener tiempo para abarcarlo todo.
How are you liking your new position?
ENG: I feel very responsible! Becoming a professor at a Superior Music School is very delicate. Students who come already have a good level and from the moment they start their bachelor's degree, it means they want to enter the professional world. So my job is to give them the tools to develop more of their skills and to help them in their first steps in the professional field. I find it very rewarding, it is beautiful to see their progress.
ES: ¡me siento muy responsable! Convertirse en Profesora de un centro superior es muy delicado. Los estudiantes que vienen a estudiar conmigo ya tienen un buen nivel y desde el momento que empiezan el superior, quiere decir que se quieren convertir en músicos profesionales. Así que mi trabajo consiste en darles herramientas para que desarrollen más sus capacidades y ayudarles en sus primeros pasos en el mundo laboral. Es un trabajo que me recompensa mucho, es precioso ver su progreso.
Any upcoming projects?
ENG: Yes, but of course it's a special year so it can change any moment. I'm looking forward to my recital at Taipei National Concert Hall and Theater at the end of January, it will be my debut in Taiwan and there couldn't be a better venue for it! Then in May I'm playing a chamber music recital at Palau de la Música Catalana, in Barcelona, which, of course, is very special for me, as it's my country. And of course...the current nightmare: releasing my new Album, "Franch plays Franck". Although recording is already done, currently we’re in process of editing and starting to film the promotional material.
ES: Si, pero es un año especial así que todo puede cambiar en cualquier momento. Me hace mucha ilusión mi recital en el Auditorio Nacional de Taipei a finales de enero, será mi debut en Taiwan y no podía ser en un sitio mejor! Más tarde, en mayo tengo un recital de música de cámara en el Palau de la Música Catalana, en Barcelona, el cual es muy especial para mi ya que es en mi país. Y por supuesto…mi pesadilla actual: lanzar mi nuevo álbum “Franch plays Franck”. Aunque la grabación ya está realizada, ahora estamos en el proceso de edición y filmación del material promocional.
What wonderful new thing have you been doing since COVID?
E: Well…totally unexpected a second album is on the way!!! It’s already 5 years since the release of “Gypsy Airs” (Solfa Recordings, 2015) and for a while I was thinking it was time to record a second one, but of course during my time in China that was impossible. I hardly was finding time to practice for my solo concerts, imagine to practice for a recording! Then, once back in Europe, as a miracle, I received a call from the World Music Competition: they offered me the possibility to record a CD with them. I simply couldn’t believe it: a perfect chance in a perfect moment. It was supposed to be released by the end of this year but due to the current situation we have postponed it to 2021. The CD is the result of winning the Grand Prix of the 27th World Music Competition and we recorded it in Vienna last September together with the amazing pianist/composer Albert Guinovart, who is a Sony Classical and Steinway and Sons Artist. His musicality and level are outstanding and has been the key to be able to record such a demanding program for flute and piano. The CD will include Grieg Sonata n.2, Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Franck Sonata and another work by the latter called, Aimer, originally for voice and piano.
ES: Pues…totalmente inesperado es la llegada de un segundo álbum!!! Ya hace 5 años desde mi primer CD, “Gypsy Airs” (Solfa Recording, 2015) y desde hace tiempo ya pensaba grabar un segundo, pero desde luego fue imposible durante mi periodo en China. Apenas tenía tiempo para preparar mis recitales, imagina si tuviera que preparar una grabación! Entonces, como si de un milagro se tratase, recibí una llamada de la World Music Competition ofreciéndome la posibilidad de grabar un CD con ellos. No me lo podía creer: una oportunidad perfecta en el momento perfecto. El álbum estaba previsto para finales de este año pero a causa de la situación actual hemos preferido posponerlo para 2021. El CD es fruto del Grand Prix que obtuve en la 27 World Music Competition y fue grabado en Viena el pasado mes de setiembre junto con el magnífico pianista/compositor Albert Guinovart, que es Sony Classical and Steinway and Sons Artist. Su musicalidad y nivel es increíble y fue la clave para poder grabar un repertorio tan exigente para flauta y piano. El CD incluirá la Sonata núm.2 de Grieg, Introducción y Rondo Capriccioso de Saint-Saëns, la sonata de Franck y una obra para voz y piano del mismo, “Aimer”.
