DR. G’s FLUTE HOROSCOPES July 2022

by Rachel Taylor Geier

Happy July! The planets are pairing up this month to motivate new plans of action. The month begins with Mercury joining the Sun, encouraging us to share our best creative ideas with a larger audience. At the same time, Mars will be linking up with Uranus, inspiring us to get to work on any off-the-wall, but totally awesome, new projects. Mars does not really have an off button and Uranus does not understand the meaning of the word “impossible.” Follow both your intuitions and ambitions. Venus and Mercury will again be moving signs mid-month, urging us to listen to our hearts and speak our minds, regardless of the “shoulds” and “can’ts” from our inner critics. The month closes with a New Moon bringing in wonderful new opportunities in the month ahead. Follow the cues of the Universe. There is a pot of gold at the end of celestial rainbow in July.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

July 5th – Mercury moves into your 1st house of identity, joining the Sun. Say what you mean and mean what you say when Mercury moves into your sign. Make a wish list of all your most important flute-related items and ambitions. Now ask for them! Do you need a new flute? Start window shopping. Do you need to perform more? Start planning a recital. Do you want to join a local orchestra? Audition.

July 5th – Mars joins Uranus in your 11th house of groups and communities. Mars will ask you to start a new ensemble. Does your community have a flute choir? If not, start one! Interested in woodwind quintet literature? Start reaching out to your colleagues to form a group. It is, after all, wedding season – Advertise your services to couples searching for music for their upcoming nuptials.

July 13th – A Full Moon appears in your 7th house of relationships. There may be a toxic relationship in your environment that must be addressed. Do you have difficult colleague that seems determined to compete unnecessarily with you? Rather than stewing in silence, try inviting this colleague out for coffee to clear the air. How can you help them feel more comfortable simply making music on your own individual terms? What can you learn from each other? Are there any opportunities to pool your collective talents?

July 17th – Venus moves into your 1st house of identity. Venus will make you quite popular when it moves signs. This is the very best time to host a recital. If a full-blown recital is not possible, could you host a joint recital with another colleague? Do you have a masterclass performance coming up? Venus will help you put your best foot forward. Enjoy your moment!

July 19th – Mercury moves into your 2nd house of income. This is a great time to ask your boss or conductor for a raise. You have proven your worth as a player and have some excellent ideas to help the group improve. You may also have other untapped transferable skills that could be quite valuable to your workplace. Chat with the person in charge. How do you get to the next level?

July 22nd – The Sun moves into your 2nd house of income. You are motivated to pursue a promotion or find a new position that more closely matches your skill set and interests. Check the job boards. Any calls for auditions in an interesting location? Are there teaching opportunities in and around your community? Start researching all possible job opportunities.

July 28th – A New Moon appears in your 2nd house of income. You may be offered that new job that you applied to, or at least asked to interview or audition. Your boss or conductor may have also heard through the grapevine that you applied to another position and may now offer you a matching retention package. Remember to consider your own happiness (which is more valuable than a salary bump). Which job will make you love your life a bit more? Go for that one!

Leo (July 23-August 22)

July 5th – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities, joining the Sun. You will be spending a lot of time in the practice room at the beginning of the month. This is a great time to reexamine your practice methods. How do you approach practice? Do you have a set routine? Change it up! Create practice theme days (ex. Memorization Monday, Technique Tuesday, etc.). Record your experiences on your flute blog. What works best for you? Write about it!

July 5th – Mars joins Uranus in your 10th house of career goals. Are you on track with your career goals? What is the next step you need to take to reach those goals? Mars will give you the motivation to go for whatever you want this month. Uranus, however, will ask you to think outside of the box. Do you have a really good idea for flute video or a product that hasn’t been done before? Take a risk! It may put you in the spotlight and down a different, more exciting career path.

July 13th – A Full Moon appears in your 6th house of daily work and health routines. Something in your daily schedule is just not working. Are you struggling to get everything done each day? Is there a project that you have been procrastinating? Are you not fitting in enough concentrated practice time in your day? This Full Moon will ask you to remove activities and responsibilities from your life that take up too much time without adding much value. Clear your schedule. Delegate what can be delegated.

July 17th – Venus moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Venus will ask you to practice from the heart. Play through those favorite pieces from yesterday that still speak to you today. Do some improvisation. Make the rules up as you go. What music does your soul want you to play? If it makes you happy, play it!

July 19th – Mercury moves into your 1st house of identity. Mercury will ask you to demand what you want when it moves signs. What is it that you really need to get to the next level in your flute life? Is it a new flute? Is it more time to teach or perform? Is it a new job doing more of what you love? Whatever it is, go for it! Mercury wants you to put your most important plans into action.

July 22nd – The Sun moves into your 1st house of identity. You are focused on what is important to you. It is time to go for what you want! This is also a great time to host a recital. Show the world what you’ve got! What makes you unique as a performer? Show it off loud and proud.

July 28th – A New Moon appears in your 1st house of identity. A new opportunity will appear in your life. You may have recently auditioned for a local performing group or applied to a very meaningful job. The New Moon will give you some good news in connection with this position. Be courageous and go for what you want! Hold tight to your priorities. You are on the brink of becoming the flutist you truly want to be.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

July 5th – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities, joining the Sun. This is a great time to host a sectional or a masterclass. Your focus will be on collaboration. Work out all those tricky technical bits in your orchestral repertoire with your colleagues. Slow it down. Break it down. Ask others for other creative approaches to difficult passages. Pool your creative problem-solving skills. You are stronger together.

July 5th – Mars joins Uranus in your 9th house of travel and higher education. Mars wants you leave your flute in its case and take an adventure. Uranus will ask you to put aside your Virgo perfectionist mindset and improvise. Just hop in the car and follow the sun. Head to the mountains for a hike or to the beach for a swim. Is there somewhere that you always wanted to go but convinced yourself that you were too busy to go there? Just do it! Book the tickets and go. Throw caution to the wind and build unexpectedly wonderful experiences.

July 13th – A Full Moon appears in your 5th house of creativity and joy. Working on a creative project, Virgo? You may have been having some trouble lately getting your project off the ground. Perhaps it is too big. Or perhaps you are not quite sure what your audience will want or expect. This Full Moon is asking you to take a step back and look at the larger picture. Where can you streamline? Do you have a degree of flexibility in your launch dates? Is there a collaborator who could offer a second set of eyes on your work? Review and revise.

July 17th – Venus moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. You will be having a great time performing in both large and small groups when Venus moves signs. It is wedding season, after all. Do you have upcoming wedding performances? You will have a great time playing beautiful music with your colleagues and celebrating love at gorgeous venues.

July 19th – Mercury moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Mercury will send you back into the practice room. You are in need of a change to your practice routine. Invest in a practice journal to help organize your routine. Capture your thoughts as you go about your routine. You may be struck with a really great inspirational idea about a new way to approach scale studies or repertoire. Write it down and try it out!

July 22nd – The Sun moves into your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. Your focus will turn toward the practice room when the Sun moves signs. You are enjoying the quiet time spent with just yourself, your flute, and your music. Make sure your space also works for you. Move furniture around as needed so you are using the space well. Enjoy the quiet, reflective moments that your practice room offers.

July 28th – A New Moon appears in your 12th house of behind-the-scenes activities. You may be practicing a new piece at the end of the month. Did you recently hear a great performance of a work you’ve had on your mind but never had the guts to perform? Now is the time! Grab a copy of the piece and start sight reading. Bracket the sections that will need a bit of woodshedding and start creating a tone color plan for the slower sections.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

July 5th – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals, joining the Sun. Mercury will ask you to schedule a meeting with a career advisor or a trusted mentor. You may have hit a bit of a rut in your career. What is the next step? What types of jobs should you be applying to? What auditions should you be taking and how can you best prepare for these auditions? Spruce up your CV. Are there classes or trainings that you can take to help you build experience? Sign up! Carpe Diem this month when it comes to your career.

July 5th – Mars joins Uranus in your 8th house of banking and finance. Mars and Uranus will likely encourage you to go flute shopping (or at least look at headjoints and crowns). In need of an upgrade, Libra? Try everything. Mars will want you to set a budget, but Uranus may not care about your figures. Look at all your financing options. There may be a great way to finance a new instrument now with reasonable payment terms over the course of a longer period. How can you make this work on your current budget?

July 13th – A Full Moon appears in your 4th house of home and family. Something in your environment is just not working for you. Is your home studio space too small or too noisy? Is your furniture old and clunky? Is your computer old and on the verge of crashing? This Full Moon will ask you to make some much needed changes. You might even find yourself relocating your studio space to another room in the house or even off-site. Check out what spaces may be available to rent at a local instrument shop for a nominal monthly fee.

July 17th – Venus moves into your 10th house of career goals. Venus will help you attract a wonderful new job opportunity when she moves signs. Connect with an old colleague or boss. They may have a great idea for a role that fits your interests and abilities (and you’d be working with someone you respect and admire). Look for those career win-wins that show up this month. Bottom line: You should love what you do. Bring more of what you love into your career.

July 19th – Mercury moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. This is a great time to host a masterclass. You have a lot of great ideas for new approaches to improving technique and an audience of students eager to try out some of your tips and tricks. You might even think about hosting a series of classes covering specific techniques or repertoire. Is it possible to host a four-series class covering Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary repertoire? Go for it!

July 22nd – The Sun moves into your 11th house of groups and communities. The Sun will have you busy with your masterclass performances and/or presentations. Remember not to overbook yourself – Teaching takes a lot of energy. Make your classes innovative but avoid burning out. Sometimes less is more.

July 28th – A New Moon appears in your 11th house of groups and communities. A colleague or former conductor may reach out to you to host a masterclass or sectional for their organization. This is a great opportunity that you will not want to pass up. Rearrange your schedule if needed to make the most out of this gig. This will help foster connections that will open important doors in your career.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

July 5th – Mercury moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education, joining the Sun. This is the perfect time to apply for a research grant. Travel to a place far away and study the flute in other cultures and/or time periods. Scorpios are fascinated by research. Chances are you already have a fabulous project on your mind. Share it with others! Ask for the resources needed to bring your work to a larger audience and you may be surprised by what the Universe grants to you.

July 5th – Mars joins Uranus in your 7th house of relationships. This is a great time to network and make new friends! I know – Sometimes this is not easy for a Scorpio, but you do tend to attract a crowd when discussing something that fascinates you. Connect with flutists working in related fields. Share your experiences and thoughts about the future of flute playing. There could be a really great collaboration waiting for you. Try not to plan out who you will chat with – Be spontaneous and open to meeting flutists from wide-ranging backgrounds.

July 13th – A Full Moon appears in your 3rd house of communication. A writing project you have working on for a quite a while may be on the verge of completion. Congrats!!! If not yet completed, you may instead be experiencing a bit of writer’s block. This Full Moon is asking you to look at the bigger picture. Where can you streamline your ideas? Has your project bloomed out of control and possibly off-topic? It is okay to remove sub-chapters for subsequent publications or additional blog posts promoting your work. Sometimes less is more.

July 17th – Venus moves into your 9th house of travel and higher education. You are likely going on vacation around the middle of the month. Venus is encouraging you to have a good time! Leave your flute and your worries at home and enjoy the summer sun. Take a notebook and write down any inspirational ideas that pop up. Some people refer to this as a Capture book. Write it down and save it for later.

July 19th – Mercury moves into your 10th house of career goals. Your attention will shift onto your career goals when Mercury moves signs. Update your CV and cover letter. Apply to everything even if it seems way outside your realm of possibility. Make the impossible possible when it comes to your career.

July 28th – A New Moon appears in your 10th house of career goals. Your efforts will likely result in an interview invitation or even a job offer at the end of the month. Congratulations! Take it. July 5th – Mercury moves into your 8th house of banking and finance, joining the Sun. Thinking about purchasing a new flute or a new house in the next few months, Sag? Make your space work best for you, no matter how off the wall it may seem.
