Juli Deák’s: Brisk – Solo Flute Album

On April 24, 2026, Polish-Hungarian flautist Juli Deák released her debut album, Brisk, featuring seven pieces — all written and performed by Deák. The album, recorded at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Budapest combines the classical tradition with jazz freedom and experimental musical exploration, captured in raw, single-take recordings.

On the album, Deák elevates classical contemporary flute techniques and circular breathing into an entirely new, performative context. Sounds typically concealed in traditional performance — breath noise, key clicks, overblowing, and aggressive sonorities — are deliberately foregrounded, challenging classical musical conventions and creating a raw, organic sonic world.

In her original compositions, a single instrument, the flute, fills the role of the entire musical texture: percussive key tapping provides the rhythmic foundation, arpeggios and trills create the harmony, and singing into the flute leads the melody — all of this performed simultaneously by a single player, using circular breathing without any interruptions for breath.

In her performances, Deák pushes both her own physical limits and the traditional boundaries of the instrument. Circular breathing is not merely a virtuosic device for her, but a continuous, meditative force woven into the very fabric of the music, connecting with the audience on a visceral level. Gentle melodies and seemingly endless breathing arcs intertwine to create a deeply immersive atmosphere.

Deák has performed at Intonal, Norbergfestival and MENT Ljubljana among others.

The album is available on all streaming platforms and can be purchased in vinyl and CD formats on Bandcamp.

About Juli Deák:

Juli Deák (*2000) is part of a younger generation of musicians shaping the contemporary scene with quiet focus. Despite her age, her practice carries depth and discipline, grounded in classical training while remaining open to improvisation, jazz and folk inflection.

The Polish-Hungarian flautist and saxophonist completed her studies at the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, specialising in classical flute. She has performed at, among others, Norbergfestival, Intonal Festival, Budapest Ritmo, and in 2026 she represented Hungary at the MENT Ljubljana Festival.

Her artistic focus lies in the physical language of the flute itself — breath pressure, airflow, resonance, and the subtle mechanics of keys and metal. On flute and saxophone, she sustains melodic lines with patience, allowing phrases to unfold gradually and settle into the room.

Her collaborations with KammarensembleN, Konstmusiksystrar, VENI ensemble and several symphony orchestras, as well as jazz groups reflect a commitment to shared exploration. Alongside this, in her band Haldamas x Hulajdusza jazz phrasing meets traditional folk material through attentive interplay and rhythmic clarity.

In her words, “I am creating stillness in motion.”
