IN MEMORIAM: Tyler McAtee
Tyler McAtee (1992-2022), a software engineer at Apple for the watch division and amazing flutist passed away last month. It's been hard to get the word out as he didn’t have a Facebook account.
Tyler was an exceptional flutist. I have never seen anyone who ever played to his level who’s education stopped after high school. He was friends with Emmanuel Pahud and Denis Bouriakov, took lessons from Jim Walker and Catherine Karoly. In 2018 he won the amateur division of the Alexander & Buono competition and soloed in Carnegie Hall.
His instagram handle is @_mcatee.
There are many examples of his musicianship on his instagram profile. This one is particularly stunning.

He was a special person. The flute community adored him.
He passed away in his sleep, the cause is still not known. He had just gotten back from a vacation in Mexico and was happy all the way up to his departure from this world. He’s survived by his father, Steve McAtee. There was a celebration of his life held in Sunnyvale, California on February 25th.
